Almost Every MMORPG has brought something new to the table. Player Housing, Instance adventuring, Epic Mounts. Even Non MMO Games have added to MMO’s like the use of Socketed Items and weapons. It’s true that in almost all the ways you can pull apart any MMO it’s the same. You start at level 1 and have to get to level X before it’s really fun, and have to spend months getting to level Y where you have all the gear and can duke it out in some form of PVP. Ok, I get it. There must be a subculture of sorts at the heart of each of the many MMO’s that sets them apart from each other. Lets take for example, my favorite part that sets games I like from those I hate…"the JERK factor".
Nothing kills a game for me quicker then the obnoxious players out there who feel the need to interrupt my game play with their endless Dual challenges. These same player’s tend to avoid PVP servers(where they belong) at all costs(gee I wonder why?).
I’ll go ahead and use games I’ve played as the prime example…that would be the one and only game: World of Warcraft. There is no place in any vast MMO plane of existence where so many Jerks can call home as this MMORPG. This is where I need to digress…

If some dipwad in the WoW universe challenges you to a dual(you will know he/shee is a jerk cuz when you decline the dual, they immediately re-challenge you over and over). You solve this issue by not accepting or declining the duel. There is nothing they can do while they have the request up, and you can continue farming or killing whatever mob. I will usually decline once...if the challenge is re-issued, I do nothing about it but go on my merry way…"There you go dumba$$")
Dark Age of Camelot. truly the unsung hero of the genre. It can be said without doubt, they invented and set the standard for PVP, hands down and not open for debate. Dark Age of Camelot offered player owned housing, (whether first at it or not I do not know, but when new content is brought to the player in DAoC be it Housing, Mounts or Frontiers it was done right). I am not discussing bugs or exploits…what’s the point, nothing is perfect, there are always fixes to be done.
Not to say there aren’t many crybabies there as well, just no where near as much as in WoW. Example, if you played DAoC for quite a while, you will know the following person, Sanya (Thomas) Weathers. Without going into the whole story, her job was Public Relations. When this wonderful reason enough to read the Herald was gone, some idiot actually said she was single-handedly responsible for permanently nerfing Spiritmasters. This coming from a poster who I can place certainty upon has no idea what a Team Lead is…anyway, I include this to point out that yes, there are small minds everywhere. With great respect to Sanya, I think she had some sort of Jerk Agro always up…she seemed to constantly deal with them, and they always seem to baff(2 f’s on purpose)…She did extremely well, inventing and mastering her position. Nuff Said.
End of story is this, DAoC brought, and continues to bring, a lot to the table. I hold it to be amoung the best MMORPG’s out there, both because of its age and its content. It deserves respect for that, and a huge amount of credit for what it has brought to the genre as a whole.
BTW, I’ve beta tested City of Heros, Lineage II and DAOC. Unlike many "beta testers who use the time to "play free" with bragging rights. I, like many here, took the job seriously. I enjoyed every game I beta’d, and found them to each be great games. Do I think there is something special about beta testing? No. It’s both a privilege, and a responsibility. The gaming co’s need us more then we need them, it’s true. But if you beta, do the job. For yourself, fellow and future players. I would like to think it’s because of the type of person I am. It was also because I had the wonderful experience of being surrounded by the best people in an MMORPG universe. Much love to Iron Legion of Merlin Midgard. You will always be my friends. Carmen and Fillup FTW!
Ok, that’s my rant. I’m in Romania right now and not currently playing DAoC, rest assured, once I return I’ll be baaack>
