Does anyone have an active subscription to Phantasy Star Online? If so, could they share their observations about the current state of the game?
I guess what I'm wondering mostly is if this game is even still around in an online format and furthermore that if that is the case how many people are still playing.

Last heard....they closed all the servers in May of this year..so its already bye bye. I hear there are private servers still there, but I think its all gone.
Oh, that was for the Gamecube I believe, not sure about the PC.

If you're going to play PSO, you better go to Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (www.psobb.com). its the most populated and most complete version of the game (It has PSO 1, 2 and 4, not 3 because 3 was a complete different game).
Its not super populated, but it might still be worth playing. There is a 2 week free trial, check it out.
Haven't played PSO BB in a little over a year, so I can't comment on the population. However, enjoyed it when I did play. It's really the "definitive" version of PSO. Server side saves, no hacking, no duping. They also expanded the starter quests to give you more of the back story of the game. And finally, Ep IV is an entirely new episode with new monsters and new rare items.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Thanks for all of the replies! I had forgotten entirely about Blue Burst. PSO on the Dreamcast was about as much fun as I have ever had on an MMO so I think I'll give the trial a shot again.
