Hi, I was just curious as to how games, other than FFXI, go about doing their crafting. In FFXI, besides having the ingredients needed for the recipe, you also need an element crystal to do the synthesizing. Then it shows an animation of your character kneeling down with the crystal spinning between your hands that are being held out in front of you.
How do other mmo's go about doing this?
Thanks a million in advance for your replies!

In eve you first of all need to have a Blueprint of the item you want to create. From this it will tell you what you will need to make one batch. If it is a Tech 2 item it could need the following.
Tech 2 parts - Made by mining a moon with a player owned station [you only get 1/2 different minerals per moon ]. You then get several different moon minerals [typically 3-4] and 'cook' them together to produce a advanced component then you combine several components to make a tech 2 part.
Asteroid Minerals - You basically have 11 different asteroids that each give a different type of minerall. You basically fir mining lasers to your ship and mine the asteroid [watch out for NPC PC hostiles].
Once you have your components for making a batch of tech 2 items you then put the parts and the blueprint into your factory and wait for it to build your part. As you can see production is VERY complicated compared to Final Fantasy. What people typically do to solve this is to form trading alliances with other guilds [ corporations ]. Where for example one corp just mines a moon for 2 of the 4 basic moon minerals to produce ONE of the advanced components you need to make a tech 2 part.......and so on.

All mmorpgs crafting works same way, here is the main formula:
1. You have recipe what allows You to do something.
- Buyed from shops
- Learned when You are skillfull enough (skills or levels)
- Founded from enemy drops.
2. You get neccessary materials what recipies requires.
- Gather or mine materials in open land on spots what You have found.
- Buy from shops.
- Collected from enemy drops.
3. You build the item with correct tools.
- You have all materials and tools what is required, You just click to build it.
- Sometimes there is required to be near some define workshop or place.

Well ive played ryzom SWG and VG which all have crafting but my personal Fav is Ryzom so ill describe how thats done and let people from other games have a word in edge-ways.
to talk about crafting you really need to explain how you gain resources.
In Ryzom all of the animals/plants drop items that are usable for crafting. These come in different classes (Basic/Fine/Choice/Exellent/Supreme) and Quality (Q10-270) depending on the level and rarity of the mob you kill. for example on the starter isle Yubo's drop Q6 basic materials. animals can drop:
Wing
Whiskers
Trunck
Tooth
Tail
Sting
Spine
Skin
Shell
Secretion
Rostrum
Pelvis
Nail
Mushroom
Moss
Mandible
Ligament
Leather
Horn
Hoof
Fang
Eye
Claw
Bud
Bone
Beak
(note that there a several different types of material, for example basic yubo eye is different to basic bodoc eye etc)
Depeding on the mob. each part can be used for a certian type of craft, for example Shell's can be used in shield crafting or heavy armor craftin. Moss can be used in all armor crafting and ammo crafting. etc The quality of the animal part also affects the colour of the item you craft. Basic Materials tend to be more 'tonal' colours whereas Supreme is usually black or white.
The other way to gain materials for craft is to forage. The quality of your materail you forage is dependant on your level of forage, whereas the class is dependent on where you are (some materials are right in the middle of killer mobs) Materials remina hidden in the ground untill you prospect for them. But they are not infinent, In some cases you may only be ableto get 100 or so of one material ever couple of weeks. Colours again are the same. The types of materials you can forage are:
Wood Node
Wood
Shell
Seed
Sap
Oil
Fiber
Bark
Amber
also each item has several different type, each type having their own stats. Take Wood for example it can come in type: "Tama" or "Eyota" or "Motega" or "Kachine" or "Abhaya" (basicly im saying theres lots of completly different materials)
Ok back to crafting. In ryzom it's possible to craft any item in the game so as long as you have learnt the skill. there are 40+ different items to learn to craft and all it takes is a crafting tool and some paitence. once you have a tool and a skill you want to learn you then bring up the craft window, you dont have to be at a workbench, you can craft standing anywhere on atys. the craft window will explain how many materuials you need and what expected results you should have.
the items you craft come in Low Quality, medium quality and high quality depending on how high your level is in craft, the higher the quality the more the materials.
Lets use Heavy armor craft for example.
to craft a high quality Q250 (top level) Heavy armor helmet you need:
12 Materials that fal into the catogory of "Armor shell"
12 Materials that fall into the catogory of "Lining"
10 Materials that fall into the catogory of "Armor clip"
10 Materials that fall into the catogory of "Stuffing"
armour shell can be anything from Wood you have foraged to shells off the back of animals (same goes for the other parts there's a varity of different types of materials that can be used)
Say for example you only have Basic Q6 materials, then the final product will be High Quailty Q6 with statistics from basic materials (I.E rubbish if you are a top end player) so to craft Q250 you need Q250+ materials. Basic Materials have lower stats than fine, which have lower than choice, which have lower than exellent, which have lower than supreme. However even the most rare supreme items still aren't 100% in all stats. Stats for materails are devided up depending on what they can be used for (far far far too long to list them all )
so idealy to get the best stats you need to mix and match superme materials finding the rareist items that compliment each other. so if one materials is slightly weaker at protecting against peircing weapons but strong against smashing weapons, you can find a materials that is the oppisite and they will balance each other out.
Once you have decided on your materials you need to decide on a player-stat boost. this can be HP, Sap (mana), Stamina (melee mana so to speak) or Focus (harvesting mana so to speak) the amount you can boost depends on your caft level.
Ok so now you have lots of Supreme Q250 materials you're about to craft. the craft window will also have a sucess rate. if you're crafting Q250 and you are level 250 your sucess is a lot lot higher than being level 200 and trying to craft Q250 (which is 5% chance) so even with everything you can still end up with a degraded helemt (min would be Q220)
As ALL of the items (well the itmes worth mentioning) are crafted by players the market is huge Also, even tho the game has been out for 2 years people are still finding new recipies top crate better items.
there's (suprisingly) more i can talk about crafting, such as Faction items/materials, overcrafting one craft tree, special craft tools etc etc. but i think ive spoken enough
anyways, thats Ryzom
Yeah, now you see why id didnt talk about VG
Tyi
(PS i know my spelling is shiz)

Anybody know how this is done in Everquest or WOW? How about Lord of the Rings?
Basically to make something get the ingredients just like in a standard MMO from monsters and from foraging. Then get a recipe sheet that is like the Blueprint in eve. Now here is the fun bit when you put all the parts together to make something you get into a mini-game where you have a set of crafting skills represented as icons in your characters skill book now as your item is made you have to press the RIGHT buttons at the right time.
This is actually quite fun also you start off with almost 100 such crafting skill because some of theme are specific to one type of item such as Woodworking.
Now if you have a good woodworking skill [for example ] and you hit the right buttons at the right time you will get a perfect [and valuable] item but if you have a very low skill and you miss some buttons the quality of the item decreases [as does its value].
Also Valuable items such as swords do more damage as well.

in wurm. make a handle, make a blade, attach to each other, repeat about 5 times, then work on improving 5-6 blades to what ever QL you want.
in second life. you come up with an idea, design the basic blue print at your desk, build the basic parts, script your parts, flesh out the rest of the building, find any specilists you need(since I script I'm always looking for texture artists and animators), negociate with the people you've asked to join the project, procede to finish the project, go through extensive debug, put your product on the market, then find specialty groups that would be more likely to buy your product and market it, maintain your customer base, and release updates.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
