So here's the deal, I'm a roleplayer, I've been knee deep in the stuff since I was known as Temogene Talion, Defender of the South and General of Sojourner's Compass way back when in the original EQ. Love it, can't get enough of it, the problem is it seems to be harder and harder to get any of it at all.
Once upon a time, I could turn on my MMO of choice, EQ obviously, and I had a choice of eight characters I could log in with, every one of them had their own story, their own purpose, their own little reality. Whichever one I went with though, I knew where I could find more roleplayers and I never thought of it as a gift. Anymore though, yikes! EQII, even on the RP preferred servers it was hard to find some roleplayers, which I just don't understand, it's an RP server, why join if you don't prefer RP, why not just join a regular server? Anyway, I tried CoH for a bit and found one RP guild or supergroup rather, other than them, I never saw another RPer. I played Guild Wars for a little bit, ok game, not my cup of tea and forget about finding anyone that even knows what RP is, much less practices it. PlanetSide, yeah, who was I kidding right? Fun until the expansions ruined it at least. SWG wasn't so bad for finding roleplayers, just too crowded when I played it. WoW.... well, I know it's very popular so I'll just keep my opinions of WoW to myself. Vanguard, I had trouble finding another PC, much less one that roleplays. D&D, I thought surely, D&D of all games will have roleplayers, but alas I found hack and slash, dungeon crawling, old school D2 players, good people don't get me wrong, just not the kind of good people I'm looking for. Figured I'd try AO and didn't give it a second thought after the first five people I ran into had more than 100 levels on me.
I'm looking forward to AoC very much, roleplay or not it looks to be a good game, I'm also going to be getting down with the Huxley as soon as it launches, oh how I pray it will meet the expectations I have for it and dethrone PS as my overall favorite shooter of all time. I know, I know, it really wasn't all that great, but man, before that first expansion came out, before they revamped cont locks, oh the battles I've been in my friends, you'd scarcely believe it if I told you! So that covers my shooting and my coolness game, but what about my roleplay? I'm tired of forum roleplay, muds are just sooooo boring, PnP isn't really an option as I don't know anyone that plays, wouldn't mind giving it a try though if I met some old school gamers, but in any case, I'm more of an MMO guy anyway.
So, what say you roleplayers of MMORPG.com, what is THE game to get into if you're looking for roleplay?

I'm not a big role player, but I've heard Lord of the Rings Online has a good role play community. I remember that pre-launch guilds would include role playing more often than not.
There are tons of good games out there. U just need to get in touch with the community....thats about it. the RPG part of the MMOs are provided by the players. I would suggest u go around to some different RP servers of your game of choice, and check the communities.
Peace
On topic ... Unfortunately I can't help you on finding RP gamers / games.
But I will comment on your question of why people join RP servers if they don't RP. I join the RP servers on most MMO's I play because I find that the people on those servers are much more respectful and "adult".
HeH yea i know but in the end i couldn't be bothered to read it all.

There's Furcadia..if you're into that kinda thing.
At one point I would have said Ryzom, but at least in my eyes, alot of roleplayers I once gamed with have long left.
My next suggestion would be DDO, despite what many think of it. On the Thelanis and Sarlona servers, they had great RP Guilds to get involved with. Check with Lightstorm on Sarlona if your interested.
Right now I am playing Vanguard, and actually enjoying it, mostly because of the RP Guild, on the RP server I am involved in. Unfortunatly, I feel the same issue as you have in EQ2. You play on an RP Preferred server, yet people who do not wish to RP still decide to join a server not suited to their tastes.
The only hope I have is Heroes Journey which has said very little in quite some time on its progress. At the moment I don't think there is going to be a good, suitable MMO that really offers you a good RP from the whole community. Most MMO's do not enforce any form of RP, and most people on these boards will argue with you on what the term RP even means. What I have found is that the only good way to have a decent RP experience in any MMO (even on RP Servers), is to join a RP specific guild, and RP with those people.
Wish I could help more.
To the guy who can't be bothered to read the entire original post, sorry I can't be bothered to remember your name , let's see if I can sum it up for you... I am in search of an mmoRPg ... if that doesn't work for you, refer to the last line of the post, "So, what say you roleplayers of MMORPG.com, what is THE game to get into if you're looking for roleplay?"
On a side note, why do you have the time to respond to a post, multiple times at that, but not to read it? Getting that post count up, eh champ? Sorry if I sound a bit grumpy, well not really to be honest, but it's my belief that when it comes to common courtesy and simple manners one should own, not rent.
As for everyone else, thank you to those that have answered my question seriously and let me explain myself a little more... I realize I need to get in touch with the communities, that is what I am attempting. I would assume that as this is an MMO site it's patrons would be players of MMOs. I am asking what games have a good RP community that you are playing or have played recently. So far it seems that LotR is taking the lead, but I am still very interested in what anyone else has to say, assuming it is constructive...
