RvR, is this PvP without choice ?

admriker444admriker444 Member Posts: 1,526

I'm a totally frustrated gamer. I've been through so many games lately and can't seem to find anything to satisfy me like SWG (1st 2 months anyway). I've tried Horizons, Asherons Call 2 (how the hell did this game get a 9.9 for graphics ?), Eve, CoH (Real snoozefest there), and Anarchy to name a few recently.

Anyway, my question about DAoC, is PvP forced on me ? I read that if I leave my realm (whatever that is) I can be attacked by players from other realms. I can't tunr this down ? I'm really more of a crafter type player who also enjoys rp and socializing. Seems kinda limiting if I can't sell my goods to other realms.

Also, how are the graphics on this game ? Hard to tell much from screenshots. Any help or direction (especially from guilds recruiting) would be most appreciative. I'm about to download a trial version if one exists. Thanks

LOL. I can't believe you had "Too much emphasis on group play" and "hurry up EQ2" in the same 2 sentence post. If you want PvE, there's a full PvE server. There's also a nice PvE grind before lvl 50, if that's your thing. And before you write off the game because of it's graphics, try the 7 day free trial. There's ALOT in DAoC, especially considering each realm (Alb, Hib, and Mid) is almost a completely different MMORPG. The mob graphics might be the same from realm to realm, but the maps and dungeons are unique to each realm. As is the story, as is the equipment, as is the spells, etc.

CLIFFNOTES: If you want to PvE, this game is for you. If you want to PvP with a purpose, this game is for you. If you want to grief and have PvP forced on you, play Counter-Strike.

Ehrm... Graphics are actually very very nice (esp. if you have the ToA engine).

On your crafting and wanting to sell to other realms (sorta Kingdoms), there is one server where that is possible this game type is called Coop, there are also Pve only servers as there are PvP (anything goes servers) and lets not forget the RP servers offcourse regular servers are also available...

Admriker, the only time PvP is forced on you is when you join the PvP server – Mordred.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

As the game stands today you have to PvE to get to 50 then you can RvR (Realm vs. Realm – basically Race based PvP) at various levels.  If you get to Level 50 and choose not to RvR you can, but RvR the draw for most people to DAoC.

“I read that if I leave my realm (whatever that is) I can be attacked by players from other realms. I can't tunr this down ?”

Think of your realm as your country.  You have to deliberately leave your realm and your own races do not attack you, just the other two J

Graphics are best with ToA and yes you can craft – Weapons, Armor, Potions, Gems for item bonuses, etc.

    Hope that helps

There is nothing wrong with the graphic engine in Daoc. It still looks good today.

Consider your realm as your house, it's safe and each "house" has a frontier, call it a back garden. Enemies of your realm can enter your frontier and if you are out there, can attack you. Some quests require you to venture out into this frontier but will probably be from lvl 40 onwards...my memory fails me exactly. This frontier war works both ways. PvP is a very hardcore players part of daoc now with overly powered weapons, armour and skill points awarded from "kills"

Crafting is VERY expensive in daoc. To master armourcrafting i have heard some people say it costs between 15 and 20 plat. For an example of how much plat costs in two years of daoc i probably amassed 8 plat for when i quit!

Daoc was firmly rooted in the "group" type of play. I hear some people could solo there way to 50 but god knows how they did it!

Noobie part of the game is virtually dead with the amount of powerlevelling that goes on. Besides this it for me was the best ever mmorpg i have played.

If you got together some rl mates who could try daoc with you, you would have a good time on daoc. try it alone and you will lost trying to find out what to do in a almost nooberless world.

Sounds to me your looking in the wrong genre. Every good MMORPG out there is gonna try to move you into grouping. Some do it more heavily than others. Like EQ forces you to group. DAoC has some classes that are worth soloing. Though I personally do not like DAoC anymore, because of ToA, you might. ToA took out a lot of RvR. There is nothing in the frontiers for PvE anyways, and thats the only time you would cross real player enemies. As graphics go maybe your being unrealistic. No game is gonna make it a virtual reality type deal. I think the graphics are good, nay great. You can see yourself parry and block unlike any other games. I hate to burst your bubble but EQ2 is exactly that; the 2nd Everquest. Level grind from hell, group or die.

Unless you enter an RvR area, you can't be forced to pvp, with one notable exception.  There is a dungeon that runs under all realms, called Darkness Falls.  This dungeon changes hands according to the balance of power in RvR.  When the dungeon changes hands, the controlling realm must clear out the riff-raff.  You can be attacked by enemy players in DF at any time, however the danger is at its peak when the dungeon changes hands.

If you don't RvR, you can't get realm abilities, which can be very useful in PvE.  If you know you have no interest in RvR, play on Gaheris, which is the cooperative server.  You can play all three realms and get realm points through PvE encounters in the frontier zones (rvr areas on regular servers).

MMORPG's are like crack in a way. No matter how much you play, you will never have fun like in your first hit. :)

    You Know admriker444,

    PVP:
PVP is not really PVP in DAoC.  PVP is RvR which means its there if you want to do it - but you do not have to.  I have 4 50s and I honestly RARELY go out to RvR.  There are some game enhancements (skills, etc) that you "can" get if you RvR - but I get a couple and leave it at that. Takes me about 4 hours of total RvR time to get the RvR-XP points necessary to buy the abilities I want and I leave RvR far far behind.  Do you "have" to go PvP.  If you are a Albion character and choose to go fight in Midguard or Hibernia - ya you are in RvR land and any Mid/Hib could come beat on you.  But you can travel through ALL of Albion (minus their RvR "Frontiers") without ever having to worry about anything other than PvE mobs....

Bottom Line - No PVP is not a mandatory part of the game - some people like it - I found I didn't.  So I simply don't play that part of the game.

    GRAPHICS:
I went and downloaded the free trial - and in watching the install and the engine - I could have shot Mythic.  It appears to be the old (what we refer to as "Classic") engine.

There have been three Major Updates.

Shrouded Isles (GREAT graphics updates including better mirrored water, etc.)
Foundations (Mainly for housing, but I've heard tell that some found the engine better than Classic DAoC alone)
Trials of Atlantis (Great updates to smoothing, texturing, trees look FAR better, etc.).

Running DAoC classic next to SWG - ya I think SWG and some others would be better (EQ included).

Running DAoC with ToA (which includes SI engine updatees) next to another game - I'd have to go with DAoC - Just installed the newest EQ update out - Christ what do I own now... 7 of those crazy things?  - and I don't like it near as much as DAoC with the ToA engine.

I would have to say - if you can come to terms with the other problems with the game (that you've listed in a seperate topic) than ignore the graphic problems until you decide to invest in the game and get the ToA update.  Spend the total of what.. 60 bucks on the two software apps and run like heck with it.  If you don't wanna go ToA?  Just buy "DAoC Gold" for 29 bucks and you'll have DAoC Classic and Shrouded Isles.

Don't make a judement on the graphics from the free trial, as it appears to only be a way for you to decide if you like the actual game mechanics themselves.  Looks like the graphics (lol) you'll still have to pay for.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,image

I've actually seen the Daoc Gold edition for as low as $9,99 including one month worth of free play so be sure to check out best buys on the web before you run off and buy it... imageimageimage

I am in the same boat as thee.  Basically, R vs R is encouraged but not forced.  You can avoid R vs R simply by not going into the R vs R realms, although you may find yourself gaming alone for doing so.  Not to mention that the only way you can earn Realm Points (like AA points in other games) is by R vs R activity.  Unless, of course, you venture onto the near empty Gaheris server.

Graphics, especially weapon, are okay, by the way.

  • cjjones007cjjones007 Member Posts: 30

Ya Realm Points are the only reason to RvR IMHO lol.

One thing I didn't mention, but will now is that for people who do NOT want any form of PVP, the best server to play on is the Coop server.  There - even the RvR Realms are MOB only realms.  There is no PvP on the server at all, and an Albion can play with a Mid or Hibbie in the same group, guild, alliance, etc.

For the RAs you can go out to the the "frontier" areas and hunt certain mobs, and take the keeps back from AI evil guys and get your RAs that way....

Both my wife and I had fun on the Coop server, and only came back to our main server to help out the guild for a time.

We will probably head back to the Coop Server at some point - because it was nice to not have to worry about RvR crap constantly.
