I was at GameStop the other day and seen that they were selling Final Fantasy XI started pack game disk for 4 bucks. It came with all the expansions and a free 30 day trial.(its downloanding right now)
Well I was just wondering what a good world is to go to, and if 3 hours or so on weekdays good or not.
Also, is it true that after level ten you really need a group? Because i'm in Hawaii and im not sure if i'll be able to get a group all the time with only 3 hours on weekdays.
What are the main classes in the game?
Whats the Best Solo Class?
How is Game Play?
What else should i know about the game?

well, the reason why i so far stayed away from FF/XI is the fact that there basically is no solo content? at least i heard you are "forced" to group for quite a lot, thus i would say there isn't a typical good "solo" class.
as for the time you have - as for any mmo - of course it is enough, at least if you are not ambiteous with reaching a certain level or doing a certain raid at a certain time....
Any server would be good to start out on, they are all pretty evenly balanced as far as population/economy goes.
The game (unfortunately one of its downfalls) requires a bit of a time and commitment to really advance towards anything worthwhile, so if you only have three hour's every weekend to log on, it might hinder your in-game advancement. Not saying that you can't get anything done in 3 hours, there's plenty to be accomplished in that amount of time, but it's still a bit better to have more time available for FFXI, especially in end-game.
After level ten, you don't "really" need to group, it's still possible to solo proficiently, but you'll find leveling to be faster and safer within a group. As for your timezone, plenty of people are on during the day/night of all timezones, so getting a party shouldn't be a problem, especially if you are a mainstream job such as White Mage or Bard, those classes get group invites like hotcakes.
Main Classes: Out of all the classes available in the game, I would say that the main one's would be...
*Paladin, your average tanking class.
-Other tanking classes are Ninja.
*White Mage, basic healing class.
-Other healing classes are Summoner.
*Warrior, one of the top melee damage dealer's.
- Other melee damage dealer's are Monk, Samurai, Dragoon, Dark Knight, Ranger, Thief
*Black Mage, best nuking class for a mage.
The other classes play as more of a support-class role, instead of just specializing in one area of combat. Red Mage specializes in both healing and nuking, Bard enhances attributes such as strength and defense, Blue Mage is both a melee damage dealer and a nuker, Puppetmaster can summon puppet's to take on diverse roles such as damage dealing or tanking and Corsair's are a cross between Bard's and Ranger's, able to enhance attributes while inflicting damage with gun-type weapons.
Best solo class is Beastmaster.
The gameplay isn't anything groundbreaking, but it's also far from ordinary. Unlike most mmo's that would allow you to evenly solo as much as group with other player's, FFXI encourages player's to group more often then solo in order to advance properly in levels. The party dynamics are also a little bit more strategic then most mmo's, too (requires more then just button mashing to bring down a monster).
Another thing that you should know about the game is that, joining a linkshell (guild) early on in the game will really benefit you.
Anywho, I hoped that answered most of your question's you had about FFXI.
I agree with previous poster but replace "encourage" with "force you to group all the time" and with only 3 hours at weekends with new character? Sorry no way.
It's a game that needs a lot of hours to do stuff especially at low levels.

I'd say you could manage with that time restriction. It would just take you a little longer to do certain things is all. But if you don't have that restriction on weekends, then you're golden.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.
FFXI Character: Satimasu
FFXI Server: Valefor
FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
From what I have seen,
Kujaja is the most populated server.
Just choose a server that you have friends on or if you know people who are playing on that server.
IF you have no friends who play ffxi then just choose a server on ffxiah.

As 90% of the people here on this forum will tell you 3hr is NOT enough for FFXI,
Of course when 50% of these people didn't even ever played FFXI or even played FFXI recently. There is a big change in the game for higher end.
leveling is easier then ever before, and with job system and the veteran players leveling is nothing but a walk in the park. How?
Here are the reason:
1. If you are actively and understood class balances, you start your own group. You should level fastest
2. People always come back leveling another job, so you will always have people to team with.
3. a true fact is even at 69, it take a good party to get 1 level within little more or LESS then 3 hour. (i am serious, consider MANA burning for 10k hour (level is rougly 30K)
4. People love to call for powerleveling, so your party could go amazing speed assuming party know how to use a powerleveler. (i gained 4 level within an hour @ 28-32)
5. start your own pt? then rougly 2 hour per level from 50-60 1hour per level 1--50 and 3hour per level 60-70.
none
Yeah i tried it for a half an hour yesterday after i downloaded it. It was weird. Took me like 15 minutes to figure out how to move. The graphics are a little boxy but that might be because i have the wrong resolution on.
And is it possible to put it in windowed mode?

You can change the graphic setting's by going to Start -> My Computer -> Local C -> Program Files -> Playonline -> SquareEnix -> Final Fantasy XI -> Tools(whatever region you are) -> FFXI config. Can alternate between low and high-res setting's (game looks pretty good in high-res setting's).
As for a windowed mode, there is program available for download that allows you to window FFXI called "Windower". Unfortunately using Windower falls under the category of having third-party tools, which is strictly against Square's ToS, meaning if your caught using it, you will be banned. Another downside to FFXI.
I changed my Resolution and they graphics look a little better. The tree' are still a bit boxish though. But its looking much better. I currently have NO clue what im doing in game lol. I've somehow reached to level two.
The sucks about no window mode. I need that because i do multiple more stuff while playing games too... Well i guess i'll just stick witht he 30 days and see where it goes. without a window mode probably not far. thanks for the help guys.

Go ahead and google ffxi windower and downlaod it. 90% of the PC users use windower. There is absolutely no way for SE to know if you are using it. Just don't go announcing it to strangers in random pick up parties.
yeah i might do that Because from what i played, which isnt long, i had a blast trying to find my way around and whatever lol.

As for 4. yeah sure people if you can convice people to PL that are not in your linkshell, good luck with that.
and for 5. either you were sooooo lucky and you had the elite of your server or you are just making those numbers up majorly.

I used to be a hardcore FFXI player for a couple years after release on the PC, but my time has been bottle necked quite considerably these days. I get only about 4-6 hours per week to play. I find it is plenty of time for me.
I took a job to level 75 in 4 months before, now Im well into a year with my new character which is only level 62. I've learned ALOT in the 4 years that I have played this game, and I am having sooooo much more fun with my new character starting over from scratch than I ever did with my first char that I was quite hardcore with.
The biggest downfall of this game for ALOT of people is the aspect of "Forced Grouping". I personally enjoy this aspect of the game myself. It forces you to make friends, and quick, if you want to ackomplish anything. Imho, it helps keep the community top notch. Usually all the whinners and complainers can't make it past level 20, and they quit. You won't run into too many idiots in the later levels. The community is rather close knit, because of the fact that you can't advance without friends in this game. This is my favorite aspect of the game. I can't stand to grind exp by myself in alot of the other mmo's on the market right now.
Couple things to note. Im my opinion, the time you have should be fine, but if you are out for instant gratification, turn away, cause you aren't going to get it here. If you want a challenge, and enjoy the company of others, by all means, come on in!
Another favorite part of the game is the sense of reward when you ackomplish something. It feels sooo damn good when you complete a mission, or get a special item, or just leveling up. Something that I have never gotten from playing any other mmo.
Another downfall that people often like to complain about is the seeking for a party. Yes, I agree that it can be a total pain in the arse, but it can be alot less offending when you don't get a party after hours of seeking, if you find something else to do while you are at it. The forced grouping isn't there for the entire game. Just the main parts, like leveling, quests, missions, etc. But there is sooo much solo content as well. You will most likely have to suffer the seeking for party gongshow until you get a chocobo and get to to jeuno, after that there is tons you can do to occupy your time while seeking for party. DONT JUST STAND AROUND BEING BORED!. I hate it when people complain about being bored in my LS chat, drives me nuts. I've got sooo much to do, i dont have time to be bored.
But anyways, point being, this game is time comsuming definitly, but you don't need tons of time to enjoy it. If you are out to hit level cap and end game as soon as you load it up, STOP, and rethink everything. Just take things slowly and ENJOY THE RIDE. It's what I do, and i'm having a blast. I might not make to level cap with my new character anytime soon, but i'm not worried about getting there, and just enjoying the ride, and having tons of fun in the process, with my friends.
Edit: Oh, and about window mode, it's there as a security feature. Helps prevent hacking and botting of the game. But the "Windower" that was mentioned has been made to get around this. I am not entirely sure if they can tell if you use it or not, but I don't use it, just in case. Never needed the game to be windowed anyways.
Cheers!
Hah! I hated PUGs in WoW it was a bitch. But thus far im having fun as all hell lol. I got my guy to level4 warrior with a level 2 thief as a side job for later. Sure i still have absolutely no idea what im doing but its still fun. I'm sure the 3 hours a day i get on weekdays would do perfect. But since on the weekend i can be on for hours on end im good. And Shall use the windower thing. I need it for the other things i do but other than that nothing else. The cooldown time for the job traits is kinda crazy though. i mean, two hours after you use one ability? wow.... oh well. Well thanks again people!=]

As you level up, depending on what job you're playing as, you'll get more job abilities with much lower cool down times. The first one that your have for each job does have a huge cool down, but can really help you out in the long run. ie: keeping yourself and your party from getting wiped due to an unwanted mob aggro.
I think the thing about FFXI is that japanese and NA players have a different gaming atmosphere so to speak. When new NA mmo's come out, first thing some people shout is "where's pvp?" FFXI wasn't built around pvp. This game is total teamwork and interdependence in group. And omgwtf timing. Timing plays a huge factor depending on group. MBs, SATA, overnuking BLM, or BLU gone zonkers with SA Death Scissors. (Hehe dunno bout that right now, but you will. (None of this "everybody spamheal teh tank while his HP goes up and down like a roller coaster.") It supposed to be a community experience, which is sort of the purpose of mmo's (or used to be the purpose). At release in NA, (already out for a year in japan) i don't even think there was pvp.
And I've been playing since NA release (off-and-on) and my highest character is 72. I'm a casual player, and it's taken that long. The game is hard... And I appreciate the hell out of the devs for making it hard. Cause I get bored with too easy. Not meant to go from 1 to 70 in a week...solo. Not meant to go from 0 to max lvl cooking in 2 hours... (You know what i'm talking about) Besides, Maat will tap that arse.
Forced grouping, sure. But that promotes community and you like.... make friends 'n stuff. Awesome story, awesome background lore. Difficult, yes, but if you want easy, play something else.
Only thing I don't enjoy about the game is some of the linkshells get to be a bit elitist, but I guess that's present in most mmo's nowadays. You need friends, you need a good linkshell, and you need "popular" jobs for those offdays when nobody invites your THF or MNK.. lol Only 2500 or so people per server, so the people you play with will remember you, good or bad. Good, you get tells for groups--bad and everybody knows your name. With a very few exceptions, there isn't much noobspeak, thank goodness.
Oh and last bit of advice, be very careful about throwing things away... chances are you'll need it for something. And nearly everything in that game has a purpose. You rarely run across "vendor trash." That crab shell? Bonecrafting. That flint stone? Cooking and Goldsmithing. That rabbit hide? Leatherworking. Keep it to make a stack. And crafting is your friend. But arguably just as difficult as adventure levels. Great game. Not for everyone. Awesome experience.
Im still awaiting for my 2007 edition of FFXI.
I for one love working with others, rather then myself. Also taking my time with things. I was a WoWer before this (sadly) and getting to lvl 70 then being bored out of my mind doing runs over and over and over again finding that you being out rolled by 1 number for a epic you have tryed to get weeks on end lol! "sorry, small rant :P"
But yeah, the best things i love about any mmo is the advancment to max lvl, or end game content. In WoW for example, i enjoyed the leveling feeling, when you reach a curtain lvl you then enter a new area with new items, quests and so forth. From what i have read for FFXI it will be the same feeling but abit longer what is great!
Most people feel "punished" when leveling takes ages, while others - like myself, when being stuck at a particular level you have time to explore the surroundings, and it makes it feel abit more realistic when going through different zones/areas. Rather then entering a new area every hour or so, rushing through what the developers have worked hard on creating the design and architechure of the areas.
But yes, tomorrow i should get the game (because its weekend and post dosnt arrive on weekends..lol). After work, POW, onto FFXI - well after downloading all the updates .
