They can remake EQ / WoW a dozen more times and some of you guys will keep buying it a dozen more times expecting something different.

Who says they can't do the same thing except change story/setting to make it sci-fi?

Sci-Fi and Fantasy are both way cool.. but in my opinion i believe fantasy is easier to create and more people are into the idea of you becoming powerfull from some inner force or a mystic energy from life around you or the idea of being a legenday swordsman that could rip thru a crowd of monsters like an avalanche down a mountain.  Sci-Fi to me is just as interesting,  man has evolved so far as to create technology that can allow you to heal yourself with the use of a microscopic robot programmed to repair damaged cells. Or advanced technology so far as to use all sorts of Laser and energy weapons and operate robotic armor or somthing like that.  Sci-Fi is a bit harder to develop i believe  because of the so many possible areas of advancement to focus on where as fantasy is all pretty much magic and swords and the like. Now you have alot of different types of fantasy but the core is pretty much all the same.  Please dont get me wrong i love sci-fi and fantasy alike i was just trying to get my opinion as to why there maybe more fantasy than sci-fi out there.  I loved AO when it was younger i thought they did a great job when it was created and i hope the new Warhammer 40k is a huge success cuz i can say i will play it for sure, but at the same time i cant wait for Warhammer cuz i belive it will be good as well.  I liked WoW for a while i hit lvl 70 but just desired a change so i went back to EQ2 and am currently enjoying that again.  I will always jump around on games i just like to play, but i do love fantasy and sci-fi both. I would love to see alot more sci-fi out there but i belive there is just more desire for fantasy.  If that makes any sense at all im just gettin my 2 cents out there.

Fantasy I think is easier to make because everyone has the same vision of what fantasy is, knights, swords, wizards and dragons and castles AND an assortment of monsters.

Mostly everything stems from Tolkien in one way shape or other.

Personally I like both but sci-fi is harder to come up with a more believeable world. If its to realistic its puts you to sleep like EVE did me, if its to far the other way it no longer becomes sci-fiction and becomes sci-fantasy. Then the whole slew of failures by trying to maximize on top selling sci-fi movies like matrix, starwars, soon trek and sg1.

Coming up with "believeable" sci fi, to a player base that expects both realism and science is difficult, I know as I've done a lot on my own world. To far one way or the other and many peoples opinion on whether its sci-fi or not starts to come into question.

For instance, Firefly...is that a sci-fi or a western...the same can be said about star trek (original series) it was initally dubbed bonanza in the stars or something similar.

So far we've seen fantasy movies fail and their games soar, while sci-fi movies soar and their games fail. Hopefully, that will be rectified soon.

I really think that theres way to many FPS/TPS games out there already..

i play mmorps only because of the sword fighting..

sci fi mmo, is in my opinion geek fps/tps.. no bad feelings!

Let he who is without an inner geek cast the first stone! The majority of people will call you a geek if you told them that you play online games, so calling those whom are interested in the sci-fi genre geeks is quite funny imo.

But anway, I personally like fantasy because almost anything can be done and justified. Due to the fact that most of these games have magic in them, something extremely bizarre happening is seen as perfectly plausible. This cannot happen in a MMO with a historical backdrop though. I think  people just like defying the norm

Sci-fi fans are older then fantasy fan.... usually far over 15 years old. never saw an 8 year old boy readin Philip K.Dick, but saw a lot young Terry Brooks (yeach) readers. A sci-fi mmorpg will probably cut out players fro 8 to 15 years old, with consequent money loss.

Sci-fi fans pay more attention to realism and details. Sadly a great part of fantasy fans don't care about enviormentstory coherence (that's bad also for movies and book, there's to much fantasy crap around). This means a lot addictional work for the writers, meaning higher development costs.

Sci-fi fans loves more complex social enviroments. Try talk the about "lawful good kindoom" or "the dark elfeves, a whole people devoted to evil" and they'll start crying. This again that you need damned good wirters and you have to pay them.

I really woulf like to see some distopic sci-fi (philip k dick, shirley, etc) or cyberpunk mmorpg (neuroancer!!!), but I have no hope to see something good. I think the maximum we'll see is something super-heroistic like matrix (wich is a terry brooks story with the magic called machines and pc).

Some sword&spaceship shold sound good to.

Mommy says I should play less,
    Boyfriend hates my pc,
even my dog try killing my laptop...
    Hould I play less?

    NAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Fantasy is bigger than sci-fi in literature, pen & paper RPGs, and MMOGs. Sci-fi is (I guess) bigger on the big screen though.

Why? because we can all relate to it; take the middle ages, add somewhat familiar magic, myths and legends, and there you go. Sci-fi is more tricky, as there are thousands of opinions and visions, and unless you go far out enough it's not even that surely sci-fi in 10-20 years anyway. :p

i do like sci fi, but not the sci fi as we see in the mmo gengre, to me they feel just like a reskinned fantasy mmo, with poor TPS inplanted..

where the fantasy type (fighting with sword, magic) is kind of rare outside mmo imo, and most or the singleplayer games whas really poor too imo, exept for maby gothic and fable!

and i really cant see realism in fighting with a laser sword or shooting with a laser gun, but i can see realism in fighting with a iron sword & shooting with a bow (magic is a different story).. so how can a sci fi game be more realistic?

tank god games isnt realistic, would be funny if the character had to go to the toilet every now and than!
