bwhahah I don't know why but that struck me as hilarious.

Ya I also forgot to mention the native resolution..It's surprising though what a  few tweaks to your monitor can do to the colour.. even if it "should" be good out of the box it rarely is.

Thanks gpett. Most people do not know that the CRT being made now are WORSE than those 3-5 years ago .. odd is it not.

This thread hold a place in my heart becuase for the last year and 1/2 i have been watchign LCD screens and well so far i CAN't switch .. why my CRT blows them away its only a 19 inch (but thats basicly like 1.4 times taller than a wide screen anyways).  My crt's pixels are so darn small i have to put my eye to the screen to see them :)

Its picture is shinny as all heck and its color is wonderful... its only real down side ... it weights 43 lbs , its a freaking brick that pumps out heat.

Still as far as picture quality goes i am havign a hard time switching... i think ill check out best buy etc and just see how the higher end 1000:1 contrast, 5-2 ms, 300-330 brightness 21-22" look. Still i doubt ill be switching, tho i want to for some reason.

Btw i blame this entire CRT to LCD on that darn Al Gore ... darn you!!!

So what LCDs use a ton less energy , had they keep improving CRTs maybe atm we all be using totaly amazing CRT monitors ... not likely  but so what i can dream..

PS. Curse you Al Gore. Glaicers are boring anyway.

    I agree!

I have never seen an LCD monitor anywhere that compares to my CRT.  And trust me, I have been wantingly searching.  I have a Viewsonic A90f and it looks just fine to me in everything.  I would love to have one of those widescreen LCD's, but the pictures just aren't up to par for me to make that transition just yet.  They don't look nearly as crisp as my CRT, and the colors are just weird.

You definatley have something setup wrong. As someone suggested before it is likley an issue with native resolution.
I'm guessing that if your shopping in that price range your getting a good monitor,  make / model number would be helpfull.

He doesn't want help - he just wants to complain.  If he had asked for help, instead of just bitching, I'm sure he would have received plenty.

Here are the 3 I tried...

    Acer AL2216Wbd
    Viewsonic VX2025wm
    Samsung Synmaster 204

And you have tried the cheapest low end monitors on the market, basically. All are TN panels, 6-bit colors, low contrast. Yes they will all look inferior to a high quality CRT. What you need is an LCD monitor with a PVA panel. Those are 8-bit, high contrast screens, and will look just as good if not better than a CRT. Your Samsung 204B has a TN panel. Cheap. My Samsung 215TW has a PVA panel. More expensive, but way worth the money.

Hey mate, firstly i havnt read all the replies so i might be repeating someones :P.

Anyway i was in the same boat as yoy, i had a nice 17" CRT LG Monitor from about 4 years ago or so, brightness and such were the reasons why i wanted to change, and the cleararity of it.

Brought myself the Samsung 226BW 22" Widescreen. Set everything up and Vista looked great on it!

But i wanted to play games, each one i loaded up looked crap, now at that time i was abit disapointed but i knew the res of the games compared to the monitor wernt the same, so i pumped up the resolutions of the games - WoW, Fear, C&C3, DoW ect and ta-da, the graphics, the smoothness went so much better then the CRT.

Just have to muck around with either the calibration of the monitor settings, and game settings aswell. Worked for me anyway lol.

    cheers.

Well for my 2 cents and i always get change back lol, i had an lcd moniter, i didnt know but with an older vid card the demands of the lcd or plasma moniters made shit lag bad because of the demands on the cpu and the vid card, So... I got more ram, git the newest ati card and installed both and the lacd and plasma moniter run sooooo much better, ran i should say, as one day dumb me got into a rather heated argument with the wife and she destroyed some stuff and I destroyed some stuff and now my plasma moniter is in ruined pieces in the dump lol.

LCDs beat CRTs in any way possible just that they can get damaged pretty damn easily.

Cheap LCDs are worse than a half decent CRT for gaming, I think some of you have been on LCD so long you forget what your missing with CRT.

I have yet to find an LCD worth changing from my CRT unless I pay quite a few hundred for.  Cheaper LCDs are worse than any CRT, but good LCDs are probably worth the switch.

I bought a Sony SDMHS75P (17" XBRITE) almost two years ago, and I love it. I gave up a 19" NEC CRT for it, and I have had very few regrets. As it's an older model, it has an 8ms response time, which means that I get a few breaks here and there when there's something repetitive moving by very quickly (the bridge out of Trestlebridge in LOTRO, for instance) but overall, it performs very well and I'm exceedingly happy with it.

I can't imagine giving up the extra 18" of desk space for a CRT ever again.

    UPDATE:

I just sent off for this monitor.  Hopefully my luck will change.  Yeah, it's more than I was trying to spend, but whatever.  Hopefully it will be worth it...

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refresh_rate

Much of the discussion of refresh rate does not apply to LCD monitors. This is because while a phosphor on a CRT will begin to dim as soon as the electron beam passes it, LCD cells open to pass a continuous stream of light, and do not dim until instructed to produce a darker color. Pertaining to LCDs, see also response time and Input lag.

I agree that CRT looks better in many cases.  I find the positives outweigh the negatives.  LCDs generate much less heat, consume a lot less power, and are easy to move around.  I'd rather have those then a shiny picture.
