Game companies read threads like that and go "why spend the next 6 months doing beta fixing bugs, adding content and balancign class, when we can release it now, and get money for the next 6 months while we do all that, since we are going to do that anyway, we are just missing out on 6 months worth of revenue!"
Then you get a game like vanguard and what do you know, all of a sudden people start complaining it's not complete.
Sure you'd pay 20$ to get into war beta, I'd probably pay myself But won't you immideatly start whining how healer hybrids are overpowered (because mythic hasn't balanced much yet) and how the game lacks end game content, and animations are glithing half the time and there are lots of bugs Well, maybe you won't, but most people will. Once you pay for something you epect it to work, don't you? Oh, the crying that would start when mythic decides they are going to completely revamp the way your class works
In the end, mythic wants beta testers to test, they don't need beta testers as a source of revenue. It's also bad for players, since it makes game companies (and their investors) wonder why release a quality game when people are willing to pay (or so they say ) for a half done game.
One problem with that is, that people could preorder, get their betakey, cancel the preorder, and play with their new "free game" for the next 6 months or so..
This whole lotto thing is anoying Id rather just by my way in.
Mythic has already said this beta is different then others in the past. They are holding strict criteria for what the testers need to do including writing feedback reports. If you do not follow their instructions they will boot you.
If they had a pre-order system to get into beta they could not boot testers that just wanted a taste of the game.
I can only assume you fall into that group of people that want to play the game and not test it. Wait for open beta.

Agreed, they are missing out on another source of revenue, bet they could convince people to pay 20.00 just to get in early.
I'd pay 20 to start playing the beta. Hell yeah. I'd sign the NDA and submit bug reports and all that too. A LOT of people would. I know quite a few that signed up for the Fileplanet founders club for $20 / 3 months just to get into that Tabula Rasa beta a week ago (before they opened it up for regular fileplanet subs).
Beta or not, id pay to play the game early, even if it was a "Demo" with only the Greenskin / Dwarf newbie area like EQ2 did with newbie island... except with PVP. That would be awesome!
Buying yourself into a beta is complete rubbish. Youre actually supposed to do a job for the devs. Whatever you say, playing beta is NOT the same as playing retail. There's a reason for why there's something called beta.
I've played a couple of betas, and I'm not planneing on playing any betas in the near future. It kills the game, really.
if it would get me into beta id run out now to preorder the game. and it would be a nice source of income for the company. but you would get a lot of people playing and probably wouldnt get as good feedback on the game
Beta should be about testing the product not gimmicks or paying your way in.
Many companies are going to internal testing and paid beta testers to do their real testing and use Closed and open beta testing for stress tests, marketing, testing the economy, use of exploits, leveling areas, player feedback and any other thinsg that require large amounts of people. Many companies have come to the conclusion that beta testing is not an effective way to catch and fix bugs. That has to be done internally.
Beta testing has and should have little to do with testing outside the low population early stages. it is mainly about marketing and testing systems against large amount of people. People generally do not beta to actually test the game and realistically they are not expected to. We can pretend and hope they are there to test but realistically we know they are just to play the game and that is what companies use them for.
Vanguard and EQ2 are excellent examples of what happens or does not happen when you ask your beta testers to test the game rather than use the WoW model of using paid beta testers to thoroughly test the game prior to starting beta and then use your beta for marketing.

WoW is just as bug ridden if not worse and they definitely don't listen to their beta testers. Look at the BC forums before release of BC.
EQ2 didn't have a huge amount of bugs though the game style was a bit to hardcore for people at that point. Fortunately for them they have tuned things back and improved the gameplay. WoW on the other hand is going the opposite direction.
VG was a mess before beta and after.
The fault lies with the people who are suppose to take the beta feedback and do something with it in all 3 cases. If you think WoW is any different you need to remove your rose coloured glasses.

The only people who wouldnt do that would be the 13 year old 1337 kids. Id throw down 20 bucks to play War for the next 6 months.
