I was checking out this one dude's sig he had in his post. It directed me to this online roster for WoW and it gave all of his stats. Anyway my questions are about some of the things he had in his stats.
1. The guy is a Hunter and he has a pet. Is this something that pertains to just his job or can anybody have one? If so, do you have to quest for it?
2. The one tab says "Rep" and it has what I'm assuming is a list of a bunch of locations or tribes (or perhaps both) and it says next to them "honored", "revered", "hated"... I sort of have an idea of what this means, but can someone explain this a bit better for me?
3. In the Skills section, at the bottom it has a "Languages" skill for this guy it says Language: Common 300/300 and Language: Dwarven 300/300. What on earth does this mean? How does it effect the game? Do you actually have to know how to speak Dwarven?
4. Then he has a tab called "Talents". This reminds me of the ability set up in Champions of Norrath and Diablo. Does it work the same? Are the talents set up accordingly to your job class or are they all laid out for any any job class to choose any talent they want?
5. He has two different times for playing. One says "Time Played" (which is quite obvious) and the other says "Time Level Played". What does this mean, time level played?
6. Some of his items say "Socket Bonus". I assume this works in the same way as CoN did? You can equip some kind of enhancing item into an empty socket to give extra bonuses?
7. Last one, I noticed that every item he has equipped says "Soulbound". What does that mean?
Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my questions. I'm doing a study on MMORPGs and I'm curious as to what some of this stuff means. Thanks again. ^^;
Comments
Ill take a stab at these;
1. Hunters are a class in WoW that is able to go out and tame certain animal mobs. Other classes do get specific pets based on their class like warlocks, mages, priests, and shamans. Talents have some bearing as to which pets some classes may have (read on for talents). For hunters they must complete a quest at level 10 to obtain the ability to tame and maintain pets. Warlocks must do a quest at level 10, 20, & 30 to get pets.
2. Reputation in the game is a way of 'unlocking' things that you may buy from certain vendors that are affiliated with the faction. The term on the reputation bars describes the character's current standing with that faction. It goes up to exalted.
3. The number by the languages has little bearing in the game, what languages listed are what languages the character can speak and understand.
4. Talents are unique to each class and consist of three trees (also unique to each class). They are ways of customizing your character and are very similar to the system used in Diablo 2.
5. This one I am not too sure about, but I believe it refers to the amount of time the player has played their character to either reach their current level, or at their current level.
6. The sockets are another way of customizing your gear, you can buy or create (if a jewelcrafter) gems that further enhance the item.
7. Soulbound means that the item cannot be traded to other players or sold on the Auction house, but may still be sold to the npc vendors.
hope that helps
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
1. Hunters and Warlocks have working pets. Other classes can have 'cute' pets that don't fight.
2. Every human monster has an affiliation with some organisation in WoW. If you kill a lot of monster A, you get a bad reputation with them and a good reputation with monster B.
3. Each race has a language. Each side has a racial language that is universal to all races of that side. The two sides cannot understand the other side's languages. Language ability was used in beta, but ever since retail release you either have 300/300 language skill or 0/300 language skill.
4. Each class has a set of talents that that class can pick from. Talents are not universal. They are class limited.
5. It means how much time has been played at that level.
6. The newest craft, Jewelcrafting allows you to add jewels to certain weapons and armors that adds to that weapon or armor.
7. Soulbound means the item can only be used by that avatar and can not be traded among avatars.
Hey there,
a quickie answer key for you..
1) Only hunters have pets (warlocks have worthless pets) :P that fight for them. Other classes have temporary pets they can summon to help them out, normally lasts around a minute or less..
2) This mostly pertains to humanoids, and some monsters you fight in game. You fight the enemy of the monster your trying to gain rep, t he higher the rep the better and it sometimes unlocks goodies you can buy and have fun with. See more here. http://www.wowwiki.com/Main_Page
3) Just ignore that.. something they never really got around to fix. Rule of thumb is The Horde can't talk to Alliance and vice versa..
4) Talents are just skills you pick to build out your toon, each class has three trees to pick from and you can mix and match from within it.
5) The one I think your talking about it Time played at that level.. Some people have 1000 hours played at lvl 70, which means they have spent (waisted) 41 Real Life Days playing that toon at that level..
6) You got it, The Burning Crusade addon added gems just like Diablo for buffs and more power...
7) Soul bound just means it's not tradeable, Or it's BoP (Bind on Pickup) Some items can be BoE which means (Binds on Equip), so if you equip it then it becomes soulbound.
Hope it helps some
Thanks a million guys. All three of you replied with helpful answers. ^^
Damn, WoW sounds like it's a lot of fun. I just wish I had the time to play it. I know I would be one of those 1000 hour+ guys if I did though. hehe
One aspect that is appealing to me (especially coming from FFXI) is that you can solo level. I hated that you couldn't do that in FFXI, or at least once you got past like lvl 12, 13.
Just in case you don't understand soulbound items:
All good or even decent equipment in WoW binds to your character either when you equip it or when you pick it up. 'Bind on pick up' items usually come from quests or boss drops, while 'bind on equip' items are usually random drops from enemies. When an item has been bound (soulbound) to your character, you cannot trade it and thus you can't sell it to other people. You can however sell it to an NPC vendor or disenchant it (using the profession, enchanting). 'Bind on pick up' items, of course, can never be traded. 'Bind on equip' items can be traded until equipped.
Yeah, WoW is way more casual friendly than FFXI. I've played both, and whereas I enjoyed FFXI grouping more, it was nice to be able to play for an hour or two and then stop. Your typical non-end-game group in WoW lasts an average of about two hours, and you can accomplish plenty on your own in an hour or less.

2.The various levels of reputation have different effects depending on the faction. Most of the time there are certain items you can acquire once your reputation hit a certain level. For example in Silithus there is the Cenarion Circle faction. If you become Friendly with them, you get to acquire the Cenarion herb bag recipe for tailors and many other recipes, but to get them all you need to improve your reputation to the other levels.
There are 4 positive levels in total, Friendly, Honored, Revered and Exalted. Honored as also a general effect of lowering all prices by 10% while Exalted as the effect on the basic factions (the ones linked to the races) to grant access to that race's mount. So an orc exalted with the Darkspear trolls can buy raptors.
3. once upon a time Blizzard had the idea of having learnable languages. The idea was dropped before release but this is its legacy. It means just that your friend's char can speak common and Dwarfen. Every character will have 1 or 2 languages at start and they will be 300/300 since then. cannot learn more nor change those.
4.Each class has 3 different talent trees, a bit like diablo, but less punishing. Infact most spells and abilities are available to each class with or without talents. Talents will make you better at a certain aspect of your class over others and sometime grant you one or two special abilties not available otherwise.
For example a Frost Mage has access to most Fire spells like Fireball, Fire Blast and the like, but as he is specialized in Frost, his Frost spells will be more effective than the ones of a mage not specced in Frost
5.Time level Played means how much time he has played at this level, duh. How many hours he has been level XX
6. This is a new thing introduced in Burning Crusade. It works that certain items have socker where you can insert gems. Now each socket has a matching color associated to it. You CAN plce any gem in any socket and screw the color if you want, BUT if you do follow the scheme on the item, you gain the socket bonus.
7. Soulbound means that the item cannot be traded to other players. There are 3 different item categories for this. Normal item are freely tradeable all the time, even after equipped. Bind on Equip (BoE) items can be traded as long as nobody has equipped it. Once you equip the item, it become soulbound and cannot be given around. Finally, Bind on Pickup items (BoP) become soulbound the moment you pick it up so you never can trade it to other players.
Note: you CAN sell soulbound items to NPC vendors.
that is all

I'm curious what type of research you are doing and you really should try the 10 day free trial. You don't have to spend a lot of time in the game to get a very good idea of what it's all about. You won't be able to experience a large part of the game in that time, but you'll get enough of the basics to get the general feel of the game. At least try a couple different classes to get an idea of the skills and talent trees and how they differ. If you are doing research, it only makes sense to have at least experienced a little of the most popular MMO on the market today.
Hey, it's Pappy! You're the one who I was checking out and cultivated my questions from. I really like how I can view everything about your character. Is that something that anybody who plays WoW can do, or is it because you're in that Fog of War clan?
As for the research part, I'm really not at the liberty to say atm, but when I can, I'll be sure to share it with people here. I really like the atmosphere at this website. Most people seem like they're helpful and generally nice to others. Nowhere near as much crap and animosity as what there is on the IGN Boards.
I really should try the free trial. I know it help me out a lot, but I'm so afraid that I would be an addict. lol
Anyway, thanks again to everybody who has replied with the answers to my questions. I'm sure I'll have more in the future. ^^
there you can see everything of everyone. just put the name and go go go. That is for the us servers, there is an equivalent EU version that does the same.
Trough armory you can see guilds and what members they have, single characters, what items they possess, what talents they specced in.
Recently they even added a item browser and you can seek items too. there is even a nifty upgrade feature for your own item that will tell you what items offer a good upgrade for the one you currently have.
