I thought it was the closest game to EQ 1, after having played LotR and WoW. However, I was stating that in ignorance without having experienced how well done EQ 2 is. The mantle of EQ 1 has been passed successfully to EQ 2. You have many familiar zones, the great lore and music, and so forth. EQ 2 successfully blends environmental PvE, dungeon PvE, instance PvE, and everything.
EQ 2 is like EQ 1 but much, much better in my view. In fact, I might even like EQ 2 more than I liked EQ 1 pre-Planes of Power. If you really liked EQ 1 (as I did) EQ 2 is definitely worth trying. A few things I am not too crazy about in EQ 2: good v. evil. Luckily, the direction of good v. evil will change with the introduction of the neutral Skarnak (sp) race.
I used to say that I enjoyed Vanguard so much because it was the closest thing to EQ 1. Well, in reality, EQ 2 is the closest game to EQ 1 without all the problems in Vanguard or the unnecessary frustrations of EQ 1. Further, EQ 2 is enhanced with more fun Questing, a great crafting system, a mentor system that allows all levels to group together (and gain experience), and content for solo players, group players, and raiders. I firmly believe, having played UO to DAoC to LotR, that EQ 2 is without a doubt the most fun MMORPG today.
I've read many threads and many players says, It's EQ1 with extra's' is this true?
In many ways, yes. But, keep in mind that what you are asking is a subjective question meaning that there is no definitive objective answer to it.
So, on that note... I have played EQ1 off and on for the past 8 years, and I played every style from extremely casual to hardcore raiding in EQ1 over the years. And, I would definitely say that Vanguard comes closer to giving me the same type of game play feeling as EQ1.
It's like EQ1 on steroids. The combat is open-ended meaning you don't have locked encounters or set encounter sizes. The combat dps is based off of your equipment AND the abilities you do during battle. Where as EQ1 was more about your equipment, Vanguard takes it one step further by making your abilities do things like "300% melee weapon damage + 50 damage" and such like that. Therefore, how you do in combat has a lot to do with what abilities you use, but at the same time, the damage those abilities put out is based a lot off of your equipment. So, it is the best of both worlds... Equipment is meaningful like in EQ1, AND your choice of what abilities you do during combat is meaningful like in EQ2.
The main diference between Vanguard and EQ1 is the pet classes. Pet classes in Vanguard are rether lacking at the moment. For instance, Necro pets do not necessarily tank in Vanguard where as they can in EQ1 when you are soloing. In Vanguard, the necro pet is more of just extra damage becuase you will easily out agro your necro pet in Vanguard which will give you the most hate.
I am hoping that in time real pet classes will get added to the game, and considering SoE owns Vanguard now, there is always that possibility. Can't wait to see a Vanguard Beastlord or Vanguard Mage.

What he says its true. EQ2 is far more superior to this game. It's insulting to eq2 fanbase when you try to compare this to the great game that is eq2. EQ2 is the next gen not vanguard. If you enjoy eq1, then i highly recommend EQ2 as your next gen game.

Its true.
EQ2 is the flagship MMO available right now in my opinion. VG just pales in comparison, even without it myriad of problems.
VG:SoH is the true lineage to the EQ of old. It is where that game's creator meant to go when moving forward with the game. However, that ended up happening int he most half-assed and selfish was possible. It left fans both diehard and casual alike lost in limbo without the game they had been promised.
to the OP. i think most people think of eq as a die hard raiding game and if that is how you see the game friend then VG is a million miles away. i play eq,eq2 and VG. i played wow for 12 months and have had a play with various others. VG is very solo friendly i find. even quests that are tagged small groups can be completed solo. as far as i know there is only a small raid area for VG too unlike eq which is very raid heavy. where VG compares is the mass of open land in the game. you can walk for 5 mins and see very little content, whcih in one way can be bad but can also be looked in as it makes the world seem spaced out and realistic. combat is more fast paced and involved than eq. quests are pretty much the same as most mmorg's, boring and uninvolved.
but i would seriously recomend waiting for the free trial before trying this game at all as the random CTD's are very aggrivating and game breaking. hopefully this will be sorted out very soon.

You know I completely see your point about Vanguard not having the raid content which makes it NOT be the replacement for EQ1 right now, but at the same time, I truely feel that Vanguard is the only MMORPG on the market that has the potential to some day replace EQ1 as the raid king of MMORPGs.
The reason I say this is because of the combat and encounter system in the game. Vanguard has a very open-ended combat and encounter system not unlike that of EQ1. On top of that, Vanguard has a very complex class system like EQ1. In time, if the performance issues are worked out, all that would be needed for Vanguard to move in a raid direction is simply the implementation of raid content.
SoE has already showed their recognition of how important raid content is in MMORPGs by setting asside development time to create the first raid dungeon in Vanguard. And, they are doing this as a free game update. They very well could have just kept all of the development time on fixing the bugs and performance in the game, but they realize how important end-game content is to the life of a MMORPG, so they set asside development time just for this raid content. Now true this first raid dungeon is not going to be much to write home about, but it's just the first one. Give em time. There is no reason to believe at this point that they will not release an expansion eventually that is centered around raid content. SoE is pretty much known for this in the industry. EQ1 is the God of raid content, and even SoE's softer more casual friendly MMORPG, EQ2, has a ton of raid content. I can't imagine for the life of me that SoE will not implement a lot of raid content in to Vanguard eventually.

yes i agree eq is the god of raids and VG is built in a way that could compete with VG. at the moment though i think the OP would really need to hang on and see what happens with the free trial. i am not sure but if his main worry is that the game is close to eq then he probably does not want a raiding game. if this is the case then maybe he would be more suited to eq2 which is a more casual game. myself i love mobs that stay alive for 6 months after discovery. i remember my first nagafen raid before kunark i lasted 2 seconds. i cant wait to see whats in store for VG
i just need to stop this damn CTD issue now maybe my radeon x600 needs upgrading to sort the problem! other than that i love the game
I've read many threads and many players says, It's EQ1 with extra's' is this true?
Wow, I see your thread was attacked by a troll within 4 minutes...
In some ways, Vanguard feels like EQ to me. But it is also different game in many respects. It reminds me of EQ in a few ways: 1) wide open, 2) true exploring, 3) challenging and 4) the community. It differs in EQ in that 1) leveling is fairly easy, 2) death is painless, 3) CRs are gone. I actually think they've gone to far in taking away death penalties, since they weren't bad to begin with.
I've played EQ2, WoW and LotRo and didn't enjoy any of them and none reminded me at all of the blast I had in EQ for 6 years.
I picked up VG and EQ2 the same day, mostly out of curiosity. To my tastes, I see more potential for what I think I might like in VG. However, I haven't spent much time in either game yet, I think my character in each is around level 10 or slightly less. (My motherboard fried on my gaming rig so I can't play til my new one arrives). I will say that so far EQ2 has provided me with the absolute worst noob experience I've ever seen in any game, ever. I'm actually shocked anyone plays it. I'm going to go out on a limb as assume that the rest of the game is better though, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I just left the noob island and arrived in Freeport the day before my motherboard fried itself so that's the extent of the content I've seen. However, as they say, you don't get a second chance at a first impression, and I just can't believe the original noob content was that poor and people put up with it. I have more of an urge to play VG, even in its current state, than I do EQ2.
I have to agree with a previous poster, I would wait for free trial for Vanguard before you purchased....there are server merges about to happen etc and many people leaving at the moment. Its just not the game that we were promised and I personally feel it offers no depth whatsoever or longevity.
It may become a great game in about 12 months but at the moment its not worth it. Performance is also a nightmare even on the highest spec system available.
So IMO leave it 6 months to a year and check it out again, EQ2 is far superior in all aspects.

I gave EQ2 two hours to keep my interest. It didn't. Simpleton leveling and forced-linear gameplay were enough to drive me from the game. But I did give it two hours. In comparison, my first two hours in Vanguard were magical and amazing. It's only after 24 levels that I found the easy quest xp to be unbearable. And I know leveling in EQ2 is even easier than VG!
