When creating my post requesting a sig, I noticed the banner ad below it for Lineage 2 Crusaders. Went and checked their forum, they are a private server of L2.
Any guess how they got advertised here? I understand the gold issue being legal or not is one thing, but private servers, especially when some L2 ones have already been raided/shut down by the FBI? I thought I would never see those be advertised here.
Can we get a response for this one?

No. Move along...

Nope. I kinda wanna hear this one.
The thing is, the people who run this site really don't care about mmo's, they simply care about money. It's painfully evident to me atleast. They try to walk a fine line between selling out and maintaining credibility. Sadly I'd say this site has very little if any credibility left, but that's just me.
I just come here for the contests and the off-topic forums really.

I just wish they'd get on with it, then.
Fill up every spare pixel with WoW gold ads and private server listings. Remove the report button, since the RoC is rapidly becoming meaningless. Stop trying to act like a legitimate game site, and cash in on on the IGE cashcow.
At least then, we'd know what to expect from this site, instead of being handed two differing rulesets concerning the same subject.
Discussing, and providing links to, private servers is reportable and bannable as far as posting goes, but it's okay to advertise them as long as you pay for it.
Posting to trade accounts, buy accounts, buy/sell gold/items, etc. is all covered as reportable/bannable under the forum rules, but allowed for advertising as long as you pay for the ad.
As I said, the argument that goldselling hasn't been officially illegal gives them some leeway for advertising those sites. But I think the FBI beating down servers pretty much shows some evidence of illegality concerning private servers. And receiving "donations" ( as the site I refer to in my OP does ) is the same as getting paid to run it, no matter what anyone tries to say.
Well the advertising on this site has definitely taken a nose dive. We see less and less reputable MMOG developers advertising here and more and more Item shop games and scam operations like Rapid Reality with those Phylon ads. I have noticed that TenTonHammer has revamped their site and picked up a lot of quality advertising and even has a Blizzard advertisement for WoW.
This site has ads? I never noticed.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Hmmm, haven't been to TenTon in a long time. Maybe I'll go check 'em out.
lol umm because maybe private L2 servers are NOT ILLEGAL..... if ncsoft really wanted to get rid of the private servers out there, they would. If they dont charge for the private server then it isnt illegal... also they have to use their one packets and build the game from scrap also if they wanna use it..... People are gonna flame this post and they wont even know 1 thing about private servers.

You mean people like you? Adapting "packets" to make a client run on your server does not equal "building the game from scrap".
Anyway, the point of this is, if they are going to fully allow advertising from private servers, then they need to scrap the rules here about posting and linking to them. At least this way, those of us who do feel they are illegal can find another site that doesn't support them.
Apparently, the rules aren't here to make a better community. They are only here to make sure they block out the ones who won't pay to advertise.
And I didn't make this to be a flame fest, or even a debate about private servers.
All I asked was for a response from mmorpg.com.
Private servers don't really bug me, I could understand if you were complaining about giant flashing gold farmer ads (I forget, do they have those here?) but they're just private servers, who cares? No skin off your back.

Whether emulators, or free servers, are legally questionable is immaterial. According to this site's ROC discussion of these servers is prohibited.
I'd be interested if we're allowed to start discussing the various SWG emulator project openly now.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
My personal feeling is that private servers are illegal. But that is my personal opinion, and is not why I made this thread.
The point is, I and others have reported users for posting links to private servers simply because they are against the rules here.
The same as we report the spamming cockroaches posting goldseller adverts throughout the forums.
I'm just tired of mmorpg.com proclaiming itself to be on the game owners side, especially in reference to EULA's, while at the same time allowing just the opposite to be done as long as you pay a few dollars. Apprently, they are only on the game owners side when that game owner is here trying to defraud customers, because that game owner is paying for listing space/ads. But that's another issue for other topics.
I don't know. Maybe I'm the only one seeing the hypocricy here. Maybe it is no big deal, and I just need to go somewhere else.

Thank you, Ico. My point exactly. Don't expect your site members to abide by rules which you yourself do not abide.
Yes, this site is free. We don't pay for the forums.
Oh, wait. No forum members = nobody to advertise to. Maybe we do pay after all.
Edit: Well, I'll just use this site for what it's intended for: making multiple accounts to win prizes, get free keys, and occasionally troll/harass other users. can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I'm just waiting for them to re-list Mourning.

Hell, why not? DnL is making a comeback here, now. I sure as hell won't be wasting my breath here to fight 'em, expecting mmorpg.com to take a stand against shady devs. Already seen how that show ends. I'll skip the sequel.
There are people that come here for more then the OT board?
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
You mean the off-topic boards where you can be banned for being off-topic?
To be honest, I dont understand why they do advertise private server ads here when moderators are instructed to delete posts containing illegal server information.
Bit odd if you ask me. They used to not advertise illegal servers here...it just wasn't ethical.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

No I believe he means the off-topic board that is advertised as: This forum is loosely moderated and may contain topics offensive to some people. Enter at your own risk.
About as loosely monitored as a prison camp...that is.

Heheh.
This is really sad and disappointing, while it's really not that surprising from mmorpg.com anymore it certainly is an all new low.
Congrats mmorpg.com, I didn't think it was possible but I've lost even more respect for you guys.
/golf clap.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
We use a couple of 3rd party companies that feed us gaming ads. It was probably one of these companies, I will make sure that we track down which one and let them know that those ads are unacceptable around here and get them removed. Thank you for the heads up since we don't setup the ads for those by campaign some of these things can slip by us.

This may seem to be a stupid question, but you guys don't check out your own ads before they get posted?
Edit: Also, having this thread up for 19+ hours before a response didn't do wonders either, as you can see from the responses here.

Posting a thread in OTD is not a good way to get their attention.
