A Harry Potter MMO.

Howdy folks,

Now before any of you Potter-Haters flame me, bite your tongue and simply, get the hell out of this thread.

All gone? Good? Thankyou.

For a while now there have been several outcries by Harry Potter and MMO fans for a HP MMO, which, I am sure many of you will agree with, is the perfect setting for such a game.

Now back in the younger days of March 2006, Gamespot hosted a "Developer for a Day" which allowed a group of people to submit their entries for a game to be developed, the winner of the competition, was;

Hogwarts Online

Of course no developers have picked up the title yet, but the community has been pushing for it for a few years now, and I myself would love to see this produced. So from Kevin VanOrd, the winner of the competition, I present you with his design document.

Here we go.

There are some brilliantly thought out ideas in that bundle of a PDF. I seriously recommend you read through it, or at least look at his ideas. I know that Harry Potter isn't for everyone.. and I realise that this forum is full of trolls.. but there are also those out there with constructive opinions and well thought out ideas, those are what I would like to hear.

Well actualy Harry Potter connected MMORPG could hurt WoW due to fact that its really popular franchise. But then again it all depends on how whould game be made.

the setting is great but the spells lack alot.  making it into an MMO wouldnt be a good idea anyway as MMO's are for ages 15+ (or anyone with a credit card) so the company making it would see a big loss on their investment

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

You do realise that there is more to building an MMO than just coming up with a fun design?

And on top of that, you realise that there is more to building a Harry Potter MMO than just having a good design and a decent development team?

Do you have ANY idea how much the HP license would cost, and how fussy the author is as to who could actually make it?! It would need to one of the big names, and they would need to prove they can do a good job, and that they have a decent business model, and the legal side of it would be an horrendous mess to sort out.

It will happen eventually, as there is so much potential revenue from it, but it is no where near as simple as you are presuming.

How can you turn such a linier book into a mmo?

nothing really happens that could be attuned to a mmo world. Everything in the harry potter books evolves around harry potter.

It makes for a good single player rpg, but as for an mmo, it would never work.

Which is most likely why they only have single player games based on the franchise.

You really need to search threads before reposting this same junk over and over

Wobblebob.. I'm not sure if that was directed at me.. but neverless.

Of course I'm not that naive, everything in this world boils down to money and the license would cost an enourmous amount of money. Why do you think EA is the publisher /developer that currently owns the rights to base games off the franchise? Yes it will happen eventually, and like you said because of the revenue. Anyways, all I can hope for is that it is done well.

How many of you actually read the design sheet that I linked too? The idea's in it are brilliantly clever, and hold the world together perfectly in my opinion. Take a look at what it has to say.

Too bad the guys at Funcom didn't realize this when they decided to make age of conan.  Sarcasm aside, there is nothing wrong with Hogwarts as a setting for an mmo, with goals in doing well in school.  They could have faction pvp between different schools.

It doesn't have to be hogwarts based...it could be real world based.  Everyone plays a wizard or witch, goes through school and eventually graduates.  You could do jobs for the ministry of magic, join a guild (Order of the Phoenix) and hunt down rogue wizards/witches w/ magical creatures that do their bidding.  Eventually you work your way up to hunting the Death Eaters etc...

Sounds like a fun single player game, or maybe a Lan or instanced based..  no way Hogwarts could possibly be large enough as a persistent world to support 4500 people at peak hours.   Just my 2 cents though.

Why stop it at Hogwarts? Why not start it there, and as you progress through your years at school your avatar grows older (like in Fable) and steadily lead up to graduation, where upon there you have a variety of professions to choose from, whether it be the Order of the Phoenix, Ministry of Magic, specialist and so on, there are so many possibilities.

Of course you have places like Hogsmeade for social interaction, Diagon Alley (And certain other dark areas) to purchase your goods from. Hell, you base it off several real locations in England that the novels make reference too.

PvP could be handled by the likes of Duels and Quidditch matches, or have something like campaigns where Voldemort or some evil dark wizard of the likes would have to be hunted down and killed or what not.

The PvE component could hold extensions of things like the Chamber of Secrets or the rooms the characters fought through on the way to the Phiosphor's (sp?) stone. I realise they probably would have to be extended a bit.. but you get the idea. Once again, take a look at the document, many of my ideas are branching from there. I don't intend to make it sound so easy either, but I am brainstorming as I go.

If designed correctly, it could be a very good game.

I loved the last book and I have to say, I rather enjoyed the movies so far.

I've played several MMO's, developed none. However I feel that the world of Harry Potter could be a decent basis for an MMO and I would probably love to play it, but it would be quite hard to create.

Creating a Harry Potter MMO is like creating a Star Wars MMO, people have a lot of strong feelings towards it and the stories have an epic feeling attached to them. Should something go wrong it will create a lot of hate and resentment, I can already foresee that.

yeah, i think this game would be nice! i liked HP books and i think it would be nice to play it like MMO

The books were pretty good, I've read better, but still good. I don't know about a mmo though. They would have to give it to a company that doesn't screw it all up and just make it into a attempt to pull more money out of the Harry Potter franchise. If done correctly it could be good, but so could nearly all games and franchises...

I think that is the case with any franchise that has concrete history and lore. It will always be disputed when people don't bother to allow for things such as balance and actual fun.

Nevertheless, something I'd still love to see happen.. and wouldn't be half bad nudging the right people..

    =/

You seem to forget that the first Harry Potter book was first published in 1997. That was 10 years ago, and those that have been reading the series since the beginning would have grown with the stories. Yes a lot of young kids read the book, but I know, and I'm sure many others do as well, of adults that enjoy reading the books as well as a good computer game.

    Kids doesn't = immaturity.

    Adult doesn't = maturity.

There's been about 50 of these damn threads, face it no-one cares apart from the odd hardcore people, beside I hate the ending of the last book, lol.

Ok after reading the 7th book I thought a lot about this and here are my ideas:

-The main game would take place between books 5 and 7.

-The tutorial would take place at Hogwarts where you would customize your character's House, NEWTS (I would think you can pick 3 and they determine your skill) and your wand type, and would introduce the players to the game.

-After the tutorial you would be in the regular world (or as regular as the wizarding world could be).

-Pretty soon after the beginning of the game oyu would be able to choose your affiliation. Would you be working for the Death Eaters or against them.

I think the two year time frame would work well because there is a lot happening and it gives them a lot of time. LotR only had 1 year and they made an MMO following that one so this would work well I think. I do not think that it should be Hogwarts online because I think Hogwarts is too limiting for expansions and Updates.

I first thought this would be a good MMO; however, after giving it some serious thought I decided it would be very difficult to make.  Magic is the only form of attack in most cases and so this would really limit the games combat, IMO.  It just doesn't seem feasible to me because there is not enough aspects of the game that could be developed.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to make one:)

Well combat could be as fun as they decide to make it! Of course the worst extreme would be if you just get spells as you level up and push a button or hotkey and it is cast. A better scenario, or one I think would be fun/interesting, is if you had to do some sort of wand motion with your mouse or if you had an option to customize or create spells.

It could work, just takes some creativity and somebody smart enough to code it.

  • FlodgyFlodgy Member Posts: 108

What about having combat in real-time? Would make it much more intense I think, as in.. think an FPS game where you aim a crosshair and click your LMB to fire off a spell. Not the stupid repetitive crap we have in most MMOs these days.

And just what age do you think original Harry Potter fans are now?  The books have been out for well over seven years now, so this puts fans easily into that age range and then some.

Harry Potter's not just for little kids anymore.  There's a reason why the series gets darker with each book.  Note that I'm 31 and find the movies (nope, haven't read the books yet) pretty darn neat.  Not quite as adult as I'd like, but certainly creative and worth watching for any fantasy fan.

  • LydonLydon Member UncommonPosts: 2,938

There is a huge number of adults who are Harry Potter fans, so the target market will have a fairly large range.

Spells etc. won't be a problem, as spells have been made up for the various movies that weren't in the books, which means that all the developers/J.K Rowling would have to do is come up with more of them...The world could be huge. Though it's called Hogwarts Online, Durmstrang and Bauxbatons, as well as popular places such as Diagon Alley could be included too. That would provide a very large gaming world.

I know I'd definitely subscribe if it was released.
