POLL: Are you a Vanguard hater or lover?

I was just wondering how many of the people that frequent these forums are here to discuss Vanguard as oposed to how many are here simply to spread Vanguard hate.

Let's see where you stand.

Undecided. I'm actually installing the game as we... speak/write. I'll write a _VERY_ short review later :)

I'd have to say based off your wording, at the moment I am a "Lover" of Vanguard.  Though I am no "Vanboi", in the sense I can realize faults where they lay, but I can also see the good that this game has.  There is a lot of potential for Vanguard, and after GU2 I am looking forward to the future updates of this game.

I should have clarified what "Lover" and "Hater" meant to this poll.  I am reffering to haters as anybody for whom is in these forums solely for the purpose of spreading hate and dissinformation towards anything Vanguard related.  And, those people know who they are.

Vanguard Lover is anybody who genuinely like the game.  That doesn't mean that you think the game is perfect or anything.  It just means you like the game.

I am a waiter, no thats not right, I am waiting with confidence that it will get better. I hop on and do some quests and such from time to time but I am really waiting for the performance issues to be fixed, everything else seems to be fine.

  • SouvecSouvec Member UncommonPosts: 693

Then by that, I am a "Lover" of the game in its current progressing state!

Well I've always liked vanguard, it runs well on my machine (now), its a blast to play and I like the mechanics of its game play and the lore. I was very put down by the state of the game in march and I canceled my sub, too many bugs and the performance was terrible. After GU 2 though I am blown away at the now current state of the game. It still has some work to go, but its highly enjoyable, grouping is way easier and I can run maxed everything and maxed res at about 30-60 fps. I love this game now, wow was getting stale by its general nature and I've been playing it for a while, so something fresh and creative was a breath of fresh air.

For those looking to get back into VG after GU2 I would not recomend it. The patch did nothing for me. The game has been getting better. It's about 10 percent of the way there to being complete. Give it around 8 months.

I have to admit it has all the potential in the world, but a very long way to go. I won't take away from them the fact they've come a long way but it does not change the absolutely undeniable fact that they are far from home, even as of today's date (approaching fall 2007 already)! Wow.

Now (PC online): Eq2, Vanguard, Planetside, SWG
Now (PC offline): Medieval Total War 2 (w/Kingdoms), Rome Total War (w/Barbarian Invasion)
    Now (PS2): Madden 2008, Gran Turismo 3 & 4, Star Wars Battlefront I & II
Soon (PC online): Pirates of the Burning Sea, Age of Conan, Star Trek Online, (Gods & Heroes)?
    RIP (PC Online): EQ, EVE

You know I was looking forward to Warhammer Online, but as of late I just am not excited by any of the MMORPGs that are in development.

The game is boring and tedious to me.  Forced grouping sucks.  Viable loot drops are virtually non-existant unless you group up for dungeons.  The quests are un-inspiring and the rewards don't fit the work and time involved.  They're already getting full steam into raid mode, a play style I cannot stand in the least nor does it deserve to be the only venue for the best loot in the game.  The leveling pace is far too slow, especially in light of such sparse content.  The only mechanic that I found to be innovative is the fact that you can't interrupt spell casting by accidentally moving, that one feature needs to be implemented in every MMO coming out in the near future.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

I hate to contradict you, but I actually read that the end-game content planned for Vanguard right now is NOT limited solely to Raiding.  That might change.. who knows.  But, as far as I know, the end-game content planned for Vanguard will include solo, group, and raid content.  I am interested in seeing how exactly they manage to pull off end-game content that is solo based myself.

Even if they include high level soloing, which is highly unlikely given SOE's track record.  I guarantee you they won't reward it equally with groupers or raiders, which negates the incentive to solo.  At max level, experience becomes a moot point and loot is the only real form of improvement for a character, something soloers lack in every SOE game to date.

Well, I had high hopes pre-release and really did want this game to succeed but I feel like Sigil stole my money from me and that left a bad taste in my mouth. I've quit now, but I still check back often for updates and such and to see where the game is going because I really do want this game to do well and it very well can turn into another EQII project for SOE.

First, I started playing 1 month after launch so I missed all the crap that a lot of players got hit with.  I like VG.  Not love it, but like it.  I have fun.  It is enjoyable.  It has its moments of frustration, but they are certainly not game killers to me.

I have 8 characters in the 10-20 level range.  No high level characters so my opinion may change as I get to the 30-50 level range. I have played a Dark Elf Cleric (class I have been playing mainly for the last few weeks), High Elf Blood Mage, Thestran Human Sorcerer, Halfling Bard, barbarian race Rogue, Qalia Human Shaman, Wood Elf Druid, and a Dwarven Warrior.  I have also played a Paladin and Disciple for a very short time, but traded those out for other classes after I learned the game more.  Each class is fun in its own way.  Some are harder to play than others.  Some are more fun than others.  None, at least of the ones that I have tried, are anywhere near unplayable.

I solo mainly, but on occassion group (1-3 other players usually) to hit tough quests or dungeons.  Server merge will help with numbers of players available for group.

Update #2 has made some nice changes to quest logs, looking for group, etc.  Some of the other changes (like Bind on Equip and Rest) I am not too sure about yet.

There are lots of quests... more than you can possibly do at your level.  So, I go back and even complete the ones below my level in surrounding areas just because I cannot stand seeing yellow quest icons above NPC heads.

There are a ton of monsters and a ton of subplots depending on what geographic area you are in, what race you are, what class you are, or what allegiances you have made to various NPC groups.

Loot is decent enough to keep you well equiped (either thru using the items yourself or selling them for cash to buy better suited equip).  Selling loot on the exchange can be a bit slow though.  BOE/BOP should help that some... maybe.  I think they need to up the number of sales slots each character gets to like 20-50 though.  Actually, what I would probably prefer is to have vendors that players can set up on their doorsteps or even in rented space in major cities or something.  I am not big on the universal echange broker approach, but it works for now and certainly reduces game clutter some.

If you are having problems with graphics, lag, etc. in Vanguard, then you need to state what is in your gaming rig and what level of performance you EXPECT to be able to play at.  I really wonder how many people expect to be able to play everything on maxed out settings??

    FYI.. my rig has:

    EVGA nForce 680i Mobo, 1 GB PC6400 DDR2, Core2Duo 2.13 GHZ, 512 MB Geforce 7950 GT, Windows XP Pro

I run on balanced settings and I do not expect to be able to run at maxed out settings.  If I had $5000 to spend on a rig, then maybe.  Anyways, the game looks good to me, but it is not gonna make you wanna live at your computer night and day, but it is attractive and has nice detail in characters and landscapes.  If I get some more RAM then I will try turning up the settings some maybe and see how much better the art seems then.

I do get the typical lag in the first 1-3 minutes after logging on (typical of almost all MMOs that I have experience with).  It takes several seconds to get across a chunk line, but I have never been killed by a mob while crossing a chunk line.   I also get a couple second lag on occassion.  All of that though I consider normal and the game is still very playable.

Waiting another 8 months to try the game just hurts it more not to mention leaves you in limbo too.  Give it a shot now and see if you like it.  I suspect that 75% or better of those who try it now will like it enough to stick with it for quite awhile.  If you do try it and like it, then you have a huge head start on the other people who will be coming along 8, 10, 12... months from now.  If you hate it, then you will have ruled it out and you can focus your attention on other upcoming games that may interest you.

    Playing WoT now.

That would seem a little biased don't you think? Who is going to say they are "in these forums solely for the purpose of spreading hate and dissinformation towards anything Vanguard related."

While lovers: "That doesn't mean that you think the game is perfect or anything.  It just means you like the game."

Clearly leaning towards the pro camp of players. I'm on the fence myself, definately will not go back till after the merge, but I really want a deep MMO experience again, I am really pulling for VG and SoE to succeed. After WoW and LOTRO, I feel like I have eaten fast food for so long, and I crave a steak with all the fixin's.

Hahaha... I can so relate to the WoW/LoTRo comparison to eating fast food.  I fealt exactly the same way.  After leveling multiple characters to max level in WoW, I just fealt like I had wasted my time cause it felt so shallow in the end game.

I too do not like your wording.  I voted Vanguard hater, not because I want to spread misinformation nor do I want to spread hate...I tried the game and I hate it.

It looks nice,  but the characters do not seem alive.  I do not like the animations nor the animation transitions.  Customer service is on par for any Sony game, but of course that is substandard.  Normally that is not to bad but I came across a couple bugs that hurt my player progress, and there was nothing the GM would do/ could do.  It was very frustrating.

All be it a small point, I did not like how they named guys and I got no sense of myself int he world.

After I canceled, my account I did get a free Everquest 2 so getting Vanguard was not all bad.  Needless to say, I don't play EQ 2 now either, but I have played more EQ 1 lately.

I neither hate nor love VG. Maybe morbid curiosity would best describe how I watched this hyped up ship wash itself onto very rocky shores at the *worst* possible time. I swear the game itself is always going to be insignificant  compared to the drama. VG : Saga of Heros more like VG: Drama of Hero's. But even in all this I see that maybe someone might pick up the peices and do something with this just based in the number of people that were interested and left and the scorn and the general outcry.

I doubt it'll be VG because either they close the game, or  leave it as and take the code underneath and give it the polish it needs ot excel as *another* game. Maybe I'm wrong , maybe they'll develop a game which was released as a sorry assed beta and incrementally ressurected. Which in itself is such an oddity to hold my interest and also worthy of some scorn.

VG itself is VG and all the events around VG as much mroe interesting. I suspect thats why people come to this more open forum.

I guess in the end, I and many people have a whole series of human emotions between hate and love and some not defineable between those two points. Hate is such a  strong word I doubt people even understand its extreme meaning with the washed down internet version of it. I doubt I do.  Fact is that people polarise other views into love / hate to  invalidate them. So let try and be more specific about categorising opinions. The English language has many different words for a whole variety of stuff so lets not polarise into two exetremes

I voted inbetween, I would call my position on the game a disilluisioned hoper.

I had high hopes for this game.  There were a lot of interesting features promised for the game that are now just vague memories.  When I initially asked about this game on these boards someone said wait a year, I made the mistake of not listening to them.   I've become more and more disillusioned by the boring lack of gameplay.  There is no doubt  they've built an intricate game system and world which they are just working the bugs out of but they've left out any gamplay beyond the levelling treadmill.

They initially talked about player run cities, regional trade, diplomacy bringing about questlines that affect the world (Kobold's attacking  Bordinars was the example they gave).   Those things are all forgotten and I'm not sure if they've abandoned those ideas or are putttng them on the backburner until they've fixed the game.  The way it looks to me this might become an interesting game again in a couple years but for now it's just an addiction at best and boring at worst.

    I am a raid-enforcer-hater.

Remove raiding-enforcement from Vanguard and I would prolly like the game.  But as it stand, I rather bang my head in a wall then play in such a rattrap.

But what seems very interesting here is that you prefer eq1's version of "animation transitions" and If i am right you also think eq1 charachters are more alive.
This is very interesting and I am genuinely curious are DEVs going in the wrong direction should we forget all about directx 10 and just focus on trying to put out MMORPG that look a lot more like eq1 instead of vanguard. I guess what we really would need to know is; are you in the minority on this point or in the majority.

If you are in fact in the minority it might be a long time until a game measures up to eq1's graphics. I feel for you bro.

It is a good question.  I know people that love the game but hate aspects to it.  It seems we are all lovers and we are all haters.

I do not know what this game makes me, but I do know I would like to see this game ultimately finished with all of the ideas and features that were promised prior to its dreadful release.  (Actually, I would prefer they terminate Vanguard and use the resources for a SWG 2).  All of my friends from previous games (including EQ 1 and WoW) have already quit and most of us are playing and love EQ 2.  Vanguard will need a huge incentive, in my view, to attract people who quit to return.  I am not confident Update 2 will do, but we will see what impact Update 2 and the merges have on subscription numbers.  The question I am asking is how committed is SOE in accomplishing this feat? I am not sure, exactly.  I believe the people working on Vanguard are fully committed, but I wonder if they have the resources necessary to complete the game with what was promised (such as Berserker and Inquisitor classes) and enhance with additional features, deeper character customization, and so forth.

I have not downloaded Update 2 yet, but I have heard mixed things.  I need to check it out myself.
