Unfortunately, it is dying. (It never was a completed game anyway, more like a test run for a game platform of some sort)
I was in beta (First-Aid, Band-Aid, Love Bites, Cayenne for those that were around),anyhow, I left because they never built a game, just a multiperson shooter (of which it is perhaps the best, but that doesn't make it a good MMORPG) I came back this past winter and have played on and off since then. Nobody on my global friends from two years ago is still around, which would mean that nobody from the couple dozen beta players I knew are still playing.
Every single SG I was in two years ago has folded up, gone home, collapsed, died whatever.
Getting teams together on any Server but Virtue or Freedom is like trying to find people in a ghost town.
But mostly I will call the time of death as the date that they impliment the "Pay $10 to save your character from a dying world fee. The ticket to one of the last two populated worlds will now cost you over a hundred bucks to move all your characters. Anyhow, it is a good platform for someone to someday build a game on.

I've actually found there to be a solid community in CoH thusfar. It's been the easiest game to get a group in for me since EQ live (yes including the ever popular WoW), and I constantly encounter other super heroes. I play on Guardian and it is a light population server, but the player base in this game is a nice breath of fresh air. Everyone is helpful and always willing to help out.

This thread boggles me -- the game seems to be quite healthy with plenty of people on. It certainly doesn't aspire to wow numbers but is a well populated niche game in the super hero genre. Don't take my word for it though, revenues are up for the game according to the last quarter reports which suggests more people were playing after I9 went live -- I10 will be a part of next quarter's report. http://www.ncsoft.com/eng/NCPress/View.asp?hSeq=2
I left a bit, about a year and came back, the SG I belong to is still alive and well (shout out to Defender of Paragon on Infinity!)
Although I've been playing Villians more frequently (Again, DoP!) I am going back to my level 50 to get him upgraded with the IO and invention sets just to do some pvp or smash some rikti up in the new zone.
As for the amount of people on. I think i've gotten the same amount of blind invites (which I reject) and tells for requesting invites (which I accept usually) as I did last year. I know when the rikti invation hits a zone, people are shouting out for groups and such. Lots of fun.
Also, Q2 info has been released (was posted on the main page of MMORPG.com) and the numbers are up, these do not include the I10 data so I expect even bigger numbers.
As for the person who posted about the First Person Shooter. I don't even know what he's refering to? probably thinking the OP is refering to TR (which is still in close beta so comments should be taken with a grain of salt)
Edit: after readling Wicca's post again, I think he's mixing up different MMO's although he mentions virtue and freedom servers (those have always had a med server load followed closely by Infinity). His post is still a bit confusing.

Actually, curiosity (and a low post count) got the better of me so I reviewed Wiccan's posts. S/he suffers from a great amount of disappointment over City of Heroes apparently and is quite bitter about it....no surprise but it can't make everyone happy....
Yep, been around here since CoH went gold, and yep was massively disappointed by how poor the actual game is. (Another spoiled Asheron's Call vet. My godz did that game ruin these lesser games for nearly anyone that was exposed to the game style of Asheron's Call. Perhaps a fluke caused by sloppy lazy developers, but AC's depth makes these games, a decade later, seem like unflavored jello.)
City of Heroes is just a shooter. It has no depth at all. But for children used to nintendo and other crap, this 'seeeeems' to be deep. It isn't, it is just an illusion cause by a lack of exposure to more complex games. (sad to say, but games from about ten years ago. and my theory on why is that those of us that played D&D growing up require more depth - the kiddies from the post nintendo age never saw depth deeper than Castle WolfenStein, Doom or Zelda and are more geared to running around picking up flashing boxes and being dazzled by graphic effects and handed their powers, equipment and levels room temperature, baby spoon-fed bites)
Sure, CoH allows the characters to create costumes of a rainbow of colours not even seen by the human eye in games... but umm.. so?
Wash-Rinse-Repeat Missions are not even as deep as Zork or Wumpus!
CoH is a multiperson shooter. I am OK with that. It is what they wanted to make and they did. These devs are from a Doom style background and they made a very nicely coloured persistant world shooter. If you don't understand that, then you have limited exposure to better games. Enjoy CoH for what it is, but don't get your boxers in a bunch because it isn't a good MMORPG... it is what it is (shallow )
"The reality of the poor in America isn't the difference between The Haves and The Have Nots, it is the difference between The Haves and The Have Lots."
Okay, I can see where your coming from Wik, this is not the game for you. Your assumption that myself and others who play it and are enjoying the game are "children" is way off. First off, I'm 35 yr old professional. First exposure to computers was in 1976, Commador PET. Gods, I remember loading space invaders on a cassette tape for 45 min before I could play it!
Been a long time D&D player throughout high-school and part of college and playing games since the Atari 2600 debut.
The attitude you harbor that your a more complex being is self delusional.
The part about the devs being from a doom style background...Silly, Lets look at Statesman, a University Prof who knows numerous foreign languages and an avid comic book fan. Doesn't sound like your 80's kid to me. Your under the assumption that it's people from the 80's that have only developed this game.
This attitude that people have; I don't like the game, so it is beneath me and not worthy of my attention. That, since I didn't enjoy it, I'll spoil it for others with hyperbole and misinformation is very perplexing. This does not just apply to those that critique this game that I enjoy and have come back to after other games have lost their luster. This applies to any game that people do the exact same thing.
You bring up Zork. Have you even looked through the walkthru for it. not even a page long! There nothing there. Once you finish the game that's it...no going back, you know it all. I enjoyed it back then, but to compare to the games we have now is like comparing a horse and buggy to a Porche. Sure you wax nostalgic but you forget the horse was a pain to clean up after and a pain to take care of.
CoX has an excellent character design. There are over 100 combinations of sub-classes for each class mixing the primary with the secondary sets. Lets compare that to WoW, where you pick a warrior class and you have the exact same skills as the warrior who is the same level as you, doesn't matter if they are hord or alliance, dwarf or blood-elf.
Edit: posted something snarky here, but decided to take the high road.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Sanctus_Mors (I see you removed your snark, thanks, that is very honorable of you ) if this game is for you, cool, nice, wonderful, that doesn't make it more complex than it is.
I still have an account and I still play, so it has a retention value somewhere equal to or greater than $15 for me, but those who can't toss around a few bucks on frivolous items shouldn't be here in the first place. But again, that doesn't make this game more than it is.
When this game started and the population was higher, it was still tough to muddle through the level 30's, these days those are the heavy tea-time of the soul where many people (myself included) abandon a character and start another. Servers ARE being compressed, deal with it. That is simply not a sign that this game is heading in a possitive direction.
This is a small population game for a few people and will be for quite some time. Neat, good, I might even play for a while, on and off, as the last two servers trudge on. Server compression is a symptom of a dying game (see above, that is what the thread is about). But compressing the servers is a good thing. In medicine we must remove dying tissue to add time to the body whole. Resections are the most common procedures, they don't make the person better, they allow a dying person to live longer.
I look forward to this shallow, simple, often mind bogglingly boring game continuing for a while longer and applaud any people that want to try it for a little while. But that still doesn't mean it is a great game
"The reality of the poor in America isn't the difference between The Haves and The Have Nots, it is the difference between The Haves and The Have Lots."
I've not seen the message about server compression. Unless your refering to the cross server grouping?
As for the merging of servers, do you think WoW is dying because they merge servers? Course wow has about 30 or so servers, I think the populations on those serves is about a grand each. CoH doesn't have that many, but I've not heard them saying they are removing a server or merging with another.
Unless your refering to less people playing? Q2 2007 shows an increase in sales from up to I9. I think CoX is at the point where it's not going to rise to the heights of WoW, but I see it will have it's ups and downs around this marker.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

ROFL !!! A multiperson shooter..... an unfinished platform for a game.....
You could even have played the beta but you know nothing about this game.... Are you just increasing your post-counter?
You absolutely cannot name CoX a shooter because the game mechanic of a FPS is totally different (and game mechanic is not an opinion). CoX is a MMORPG. Point.
Actually, I'm not playing it, because it's extremely repetitive, but for what i've seen last time CoH/CoV is not death at all, at least on euro servers.
Don't forget, it is based on comic superheroes, so don't expect any depth into it. Still it is one of the best MMORPG around, for people that search something suited for casual play, and with a quest-driven mechanic. Also Cryptic is incredibly active with new content released so fast.

lol. are y0u pl@ying the c0rrect g@me?? ? coz you g0t n0 ide@ what yourself is talking about .
The game is going real strong actually. I came back after a year and see alot of people on both villains and heroes side. They added recipes and invention enhancements which give the game the complexity it needed. Its doing pretty well and steadily improving.
After reading other posts by Wicca and also being a BF2 and BF2142 I can see where she's coming from. In a FPS, you aquire your target/objective and if you die, just respawn and head back into the fray.
In a generalized term, that describes almost all games that involve you, the player, controlling a character or set of characters. The only games that are not like a FPS would be sim/strat game.

so...whats ur point really?? And Wicca or whoever...even though you talk big words...u dont really know much on the subject do u...you have to "PLAY"...you know...PLAY the game...thats it...pick up the mouse...lol to really understand whats being discussed here.. COH is doing great, and even better with all the new and exciting issues that have came out since COV's release. So really...dont try to talk intelligent, not with me anyway...and please dont tell ppl how to think...thats a dumb move, ur not much of a gamer if u act the way u do....and dont try to step up with me...ull get burned...i warned u
People on this forum remind me of Raider fans. If someone says a anything negative about your team(game), everyone throws a fit.
Wik stated his oppinion about the game and instead of just disagreeing and stating your oppinion about the game, you state your oppinion about the individual.
Gamerman, your hypocrisy astounds me. Sorry you can't equate intelligents with gaming.
I won't say CoX is the best, there are issues but as I stated, I disagree that the game is dying. Wicca was and is a player who views CoX as something casual to do that doesn't have much depth. It's not "War and Peace" but I don't see it on her level that it's a shallow game.
My point with the prior post is that the FPS analogy can be used with any game that requires the player to control one character.
As for the comment of "stepping up" what is this? Some sort of stag grounds that you have to prove yourself? Drop the hormone attitude and be a person.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
I would say that this game is definately not a shooter. If you want a shooter type game Planetside is out now and Tabula Rasa is coming soon.
As far as numbers I would say that ever since Issue 9 the subs are slowly creeping up. I typically see at least two servers with 2 dots (medium population) more on the weekends. Even when I play at off peak times I never have trouble getting into a team if I want one. For the pvp types, Sirens Call is still pretty regularly populated. I know that earlier in the year (before Issue 10) NCSoft posted that CoX subs were almost 145k, which is a healthly sub number. Remember you don't need millions of subs to be "successful" in an MMOG.
Yes this game doesn't have the depth of other fantasy-based games. With Issue 9 they added a crafting element to help address that concern by players.
I find the game boring and tedious. The whole enhancement scheme sucks ass. Total dependence on endurance also sucks ass. Shallow mission play. Virtually no exploration factor to the game. You can't even walk inside buildings unless an instance has been triggered by a mission. For such a shallow game, they have done almost nothing to revamp graphics or improve the combat mechanics. The new crafting system is more trouble than it's worth. They've had what, 10 updates so far and yet the game has virtually remained the same. Cryptic doesn't have a clue on how to improve the game so they just keep adding the same old crap.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
The EU servers definatey have lower numbers of people playing than past years. A good number of people left because of the repetative play and I guess some just soaked up all the content.
When NCSoft releases an update I guess the server swells for a month ro so. Though I have to say that many free content patches are (IMHO) a bit lame and not really long lasting. E.g. people log in to see the Rikti invasion and revamped zone. Which actually turns into one new model of a rikiti ship, recolour texures for rikiti and a zone which is somewhat changed and the gimmick of playing alongside villans.
Personally I'd rather see content which holds people onto there alts.. for example whole new zones which you can take your alt in to do storyline missions which have not been done before. Sadly I stopped playing my alts which were the lfieblood of the game because after the faultline revamp and new missions I didnt feel there was anything new, substanial and lasting. Issues 9 and 10 dissapointed me sadly.
ive been avoiding posting here cause ive caused much friction with my posts. but i am sad I checked their page other day and read the patch notes. no new powers just nerfs and buffs.
but Issue 10 looks like a good PVE thing. but surely the villains must be in uproar? I must go check for myself. surely they most complain about the good hero Epics and the crappy villain epics
for a few moments I was excited when i read the patch notes cause I thought they added a new FFA lvl 50 zone which is what I'd like and some villain epic archtypes. dont ask me how I misread this but for like 30 seconds I was excited but then read the patch notes in more detail and saw this wasnt the case
anyone got the NCSoft public statements? they always reveal their subscription numbers to the public. CoX is always like slowly, slowly going down. but according to my old calculations I estimated it'd be around 140-150k subs which is not bad for an MMO

Which FF Character Are You?
