"I will never go back to Everquest."
That's what I said the the last time I've quit this damn game. Why do I keep quitting? A billion reasons, first is that most of my friends are in WoW atm, and I am enjoying that alot - not all the time, but most of the time. I dislike the fact that in my absence, EQ has had more expansions have been released than I have fingers to count them on, and that to even get anywhere near the level of progression of my old friends, I'm in for a years grinding (if I'm lucky to get into a guild that can progress).
I love the old content. Call me a grumpy old bastard, call me a nostalgic, call me a lunatic, but the old content was the best. This is where I popped my MMO cherry and I'll be damned if I can't go back and.... OMFG WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO FREEPORT? Ok, calm down, calm down... deep breaths... I'll just zone into NRO and aaarrrrgghhh.
Ok, so a lot of the old content has had plastic surgery, and some of the zones are not unlike the Michael Jackson of the MMO world, but some of them are quite well done. But despite these facelifts, noone is around to play the lower zones. It's empty. A world without people. A group-based game without groups. Sigh.
So, I've read about the regen changes, they sound... interesting. Just how viable is soloing now? I don't want to wait around for 2 hours for a group (hell, I waited longer when the game was at it's peak - it's going to be more like waiting 2 days now), so I'll want to solo.
Post your soloing experiences here so that you might tempt me to return EQ for the 21st time.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I went back and played when the Combine Server was released, shortly after that they implemented the new 'down time' (I also played the Serpent Spine Beta). You can solo a lot more effectively than back in the day, but I didn't play much longer after Serpents Spines release. You should have most lowbie zones to yourself, that is if you plan on playing in the old world.

The last time I fired up EQ (was over a year ago now) I decided that "fancy newfangled starter zones are for wussies" and started a gnome wizard the old fashioned way in Klick. Wizard is not really an ideal solo class, but I was able to make it up to level 14 in less time than it used to take me to hit level 8 when the game launched. Just by vendoring the loot from rats and kobolds I was able to get up enough plat to buy some shinies in the Bazaar. I personally don't count it as twinking if I only buy things with money that I generate on the toon I'm buying items for, but your defintion might be a little more restrictive than mine. In any case, even in the old zones, soloing is much easier now than it used to be. The leveling speed has improved, lots of little things are easier (no staring at your book to memorize spells, ect.), and vendor trash seems to be worth more. Class skills have also been spread out so that you get at least one new ability every level, at least if you play any kind of caster or hybrid. Cuts down on the monoteny a lot, imo.
Unfortunatley, there were so few people playing at low levels I felt like I was playing a solo game. In a week or so of play, I saw one other player. A naked barbarian that followed me around for a while but refused to speak. I think I only made it to 15 or so before I quit.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
No, this game is not viable solo untwinked, and it is almost impossible to enter unless you buy an established character that is 75th 500AA's raid equiped and guilded
it is viable, you need to choose your class and your progression path wisely.
Necromancer : Easiest class to solo up to level 75<-----------------This class had been build for soloer
Mage & druid : second
Shadowknight, Paladin, Bard, Shaman, Monk, Beastlord, Ranger : those classes can move up or down when the developer tweak the game mechanics
Warrior, Berserker, Cleric, Wizard, Enchanter : hardest class to solo
Like usual : it is an opinion
There are some ideas bouncing around it seems at SoE that a new server or two maybe on the way. Well, that is what the producer's letter suggests they are considering(new rulesets and all that). If this does happen, its worth waiting till then for an influx of people at the low level ranges.
