It seems all big name IP MMO's want to take the direction of a single player game, But MMO's are not single players. When I pick up a game like (Star Wars Battlefront) I know what I'm going to expect, Following the basic tales of the battles that happened in the movie. But for MMO's most people want to live in the world of the movie, SWG did this for a while but they went with the same old thing afterwhile,Most people want to carve there own story in a MMO and not follow the main characters. The non restrictive type goes the way of the Sand-Box.
Now most may dissagree with this and say that big name IP need to follow the lore, These restrictive type's can be lots of fun becuase you know what you're going to have and you can see the main characters and stuff. You feel like your in a episode yourself. This type of restrictive game-play leans more towards quest base games.
Lets stir up some disscusion.

I feel LOTRO did a great job with this, although the game itself wasn't my favorite.. for tolkienites..A++
I prefer Freeform when it comes to MMOs, i want to feel like im part of another world where i can do what I want when i want. Being forced to do things.. follow certain quest/missions etc to continue forth in the game takes the fun out of it for me.
I hate being restricted.
Back when i played Lineage 2, you were able to chose your direction and make your own choices. I thought this was great.
When i tried WoW and Lotr, i could last more then a month on either. Everything is set up in an uninspiring manner. Quests and a lack of class development really sucked my enjoyment.
Ballistic!
In neither wow or lotro are you forced to anything. From level 1 you never have to do any quest..
hope stargate doesnt become another go trought gate and kill 5 aliens return to get new mission games,..
My cool sig: Turrets suck.

Neither game has an alternative method of playing withought grinding, doing quests or... i cant think of a 3rd way.
Both games lack the freedom and enjoyment of which i like the most.

Explain how you would like to level then. As it is right now every game you either have to kill a bunch of stuff or do the quests or a combination of the two. Except for EVE where I hea you gain levels or whatever over time, not sure cuz I don't play it.The only thing I don't like about major IP games are the geeks who want it to be their way and only their way. They don't want any comprimise what so ever. Thats probably the biggest thing that drives me insane.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

Why have levels at all?
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
It's not _only_ about the leveling, thought if you get 10x XP by doing quests then you can practically consider yourself restricted to do quests.
It's also about the interaction with the world. Being able to get, collect and drop objects you see, interact with the NPCs other than through the quest texts.
This also includes your relations with the rest of the players, being able to pick your friends and enemies any time you want. As opposed to the boring faction stuff where you cannot even communicate with your enemy from startup.
Some call the later "sandbox" games, but even WoW could easily be transformed into a such a game. Delete the horde/alliance faction nonsense and allow to declare alliances and wars between clans, along with some karma technique to take care of playerkillers. At the end, it's about the scope and endgame that devs have planned.

You will always have levels in one form or another.

Just because a game offers opportunities to do quests, or missions, or whatever, that doesn't remove the potential to enjoy the world like it's your own little sandbox. Those quests are just an extra layer of gameplay. You can choose to ignore that layer completely. Sure it might not be the optimal way of progression, but there would be little point of quests then would there?
No quest is forced upon you, except maybe class-related quests, of which there are few and it makes sense that certain classes have to undergo some kind of 'training quest'. Apart from that, you pick which quests you want to do. Or you ignore the quests and kill mobs.
Not having quests doesn't make a game free-form. Most MMOs have a lot of freedom that players take for granted.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
