What do you want in a MMORPG?

What do you want in a MMORPG? is it the escape from reality? The fun gameplay with players across the world? or is it the role playing of your favorite fantasy world?

I like the gameplay with players from all across the world. It just tight hanging out with asians. I'm not all into the whole escaping reality. I like to stay in touch with reality. What got me into MMORPGs was .Hack. Becuase of the art work, music, and the battle action. But I haven't found any American MMORPG like .Hack. Pretty much almost every mmorpg thats release and still underdevelopment is similar to EverQuest. And thats a major disapointment.

I have played PristonTale but its just too out dated. I mean PT is hella fun, its just that it would be better with more quests, tournaments, and more lands. And the graphics would be better too. Also its kills the gameplay when most of the players only plays PT becuase it is free. Not even having any idea what is .Hack or Anime. And they lagged and fell out the severs. So that just eliminate the gameplay I was ecspecting. They're most likely are poor mmorpg freaks/fanatics to be forceing themselves to play a game that they wouldn't play and much rather play a game like EverQuest 2 or Final Fantasy.

What I don't want in a MMORPG is the boreing battle system that FF online has. That just kill the whole gameplay for me.

None of the listed games look all that great. WoW has Blizzard fanboys hyping it to the moon. EQ2 is, well, Everquest. What else do I need to say?

What I'd like to see in a MMORPG is gameplay like a CRPG, not the grind like a second job. Graphics get better, but where's the content? There has to be more than a setting of opposing forces (PvP) and lame missions/quests to do in order to advance (XP). Mining? *sighs*

I would tend to agree with you there.

as for everyone seeming to look forward to EQ 2. After the SWG fiasco, and lack of satisfactory updates/customer service. It will be a cold day in hell before SOE gets anymore of my money.

You forgot Dark and Light which is due out January 2005 with open beta this October. This is the only game I am looking forward to.

1- I want to be able to evolve, a character, an empire, a kingdom, a disease, whatever, I need to evolve, the form dont matter, the longer(unlimited) I can evolve, the better.  I need to be able to grasp the concept of course.   RPGs (and some strategics games) are about evolution of your character(or kingdom), this is why I play Civilization and hardly play chess except to please folks in RL.

2- I need to be able to do everything I care for alone or with a group of 5 others friends(bless BI and SSI, it would be lower without them strongly implementing the group of 6 in my mind).  You can be rigid and enforce grouping on me, but ideally, would not have to do it, as grouping would bring group uberness and it will motivate me just enought(even if I would be more solo uber by soloing and not trying to group at all, especially that solo would likely resume a last option situation after a time, without any need to enforce it, yet, in some days, I will want to be alone and progressing nicely would be a major asset, even if only nice for the soloing part of the game), I will want to be judge as an asset by my RL friends, so I will go get that group uberness, yet, I wont be dying over it and may very well solo more or less then group depending on so many factors both inside and outside the game...

3- I am looking for ''success'', thereby, PvP is not something that work great, even if I would win 80% of the time, I know myself, I will not enjoy the experience, and assuming I would win 80% of the time when I am kind and knightly in a PvP surrounding is like daydreaming.  That dont mean I dont want challenges, and partial success is still acceptable(okay, 25% of the reward for 30 more minutes of work is VERY lame, but can find others ways).  But the computer is certainly better suited to take into the chin my abuses then fellow humans...

4- I need to actually enjoy the action that bring what I want, thereby linking the rewards with the proper actions is logical to achieve such a result...if I want to be good at killing mobs, then you can safely assume you can required me to kill mobs.  If I want to be good looking toon and bragging a lot, you can put me in similar social radeskill actions(wont happen until I am bored with the rest, unlikely to last long).

5- The game need to constantly evolve, IMHO, after 2 months new stuff should be added, every 2 months, and you can even announce the date, if you work your system fine, folks would enjoy it a lot.  To avoid making a *useless* sense, every new top should be slightly better every 2 months, so someone never feel past work was useless, especially if that past work can be use DIRECTLY toward acquiring the new better item at any point and reduce new work needed significantly(I understand companies want to keep folks maxed busy, but they also need to understand maxed folks can feel like they lose all past efforts, that way, it is a tradeoff and you keep them working, of course they work less then intented, but they are motivated, so it is up to the company to find something additionnal to motivate those players, maybe a new aspect to the game or something, you cant keep every players happy in anything, so you need to make MANY games so a player that is very *uber* may keep maxed 5 games or more while a silly player like me keep only 1 maxed and another kinda decent. New stuff dont mean originality and new graphics and new content, I mean, yes, of course, all those are better, but if it is above your capacity, adding the version 2.0 that is identical is better then stagnancy(if possible no 3.0+ except maybe 1 aspect as a joke and yes, players can fall into that humor and actually like it, as long as it dont replace the game(s) in itself).

6- Competition, friendly and nothing bad about it, yet, competition to do better, always better.

7- A sense of control and knowing would be nice.  You see, when you play any MMORPG, you have no idea how the game will evolve in the future on about any topic except the pro-raid leeching! :)  It is great to know what to expect before it actually happen, as much as possible.  I dont say to stop surprise your players and been innovative, hell no, I just say that as much as your evolutions allow it, let to your players to feel in knowledgecontrol of what is happening in the game.  In this exemple EQ would be the worst exemple, every expension change every class balance, every group logics, everything always, which make the players feel lost.  You want the players to be amazed and surprised, but lost?  This is the least importantof my 6 points and the hardest to achieve because the line between amazed vs lost OR in control vs bored is a fussy line.

They are my highest expectation and by FAR.  I am waiting for UXO to come close to release date to go buy my new computer and restore my internet connection.  Initially I was waiting for EQ2...

Versatility. Haven't seen an MMORPG do it yet. Whats wrong with being a multi-classed or hybrid character? Give me a character options. Let me select what skills I wish to acquire and build my own adventurer. Who says a warrior can't have medical knowlege comparable to a priest or mage? Maybe he was a physician before some tragic event turned him (or her) into the grim reaper's disciple? And why can't a magic user wield a sword? Swordsmanship is a fine art and the dexterity a magic user has developed could possibly combine to make a deadly duelist. You get the idea.

Balance. Probably the Holy Grail of MMO's right now and definitely the most difficult thing to achieve. The practice of Nerfing after release is frustrating to players. I feel the above mentioned skill based system would allieviate much of the balance issues we face in the current crop of available games.

More Crafter Occupations. Carpentry: Actually have characters come build your house for you instead of just buying a deed and viola! House appears. I'm sure there are other ideas out there even better, Just can't think of any.

Improved Magic system: Create versatile magic manipulation or spell creation. Let the magic user actually explore their craft. Have multiple spell components and or items that allow you to create different spells. How about allowing the caster to cast a series of spells to build power to release an evern more powerful spell that requires exactly the right spells cast in the exactly the right order? Magical Defenses that are more than just increased Armor and Damage Shields. Allow the caster to actually prepare for an upcoming conflict by preparing protective wards or power circles that provide he and his companions an added defensive component. Elixirs and Potions that are more than just a craft and when combined improperly can prove quite explosive. Working magic is a risky business, it should be accompanied by equitable risk/reward. A wizard staff that actually can be used to channel or focus the casters power. Non-lethal spells (Sleep, Web, Bind, feeble) that allow you to stop aggressors without incurring funky faction hits. Once again, you get the idea.

Customizable equipment. Give us options to design and brand our gear/clothes with our own personalized symbols. Right now this is only allowed for guilds/clans/etc. You don't see any Abarenbo Shoguns running around with his distinctive Cherry Blossom tattoo. Give me the ability to give my avatar some depth of character. This opens the way for Kajal the Wind Drifter to appear dressed in Sky blue robes carrying a harp and staff casting weather based spells. Stuggey Haldebarnd to appear with his Boar's head shield and bastard sword while riding on the back of Stomper, his tempermental war horse. Dorien Nightshade, a rogue albino dressed in black leather that conceals more knives and needles than a hospital. By allowing players to develop a distinct look, style, and character, you allow for role play to be put back into the RPG. We could do away with those stupid looking names floating over our heads.

Just a few ideas I'd really love to see implemented. image

A place where I can be someone else completely, for one.  With, yes, sorry, upbeat and pleasant anime stylings that are well done.  (This doesn't mean 80 million polys, it just means they simply look good.)  The battle has to be fast but rather different and fun enough to make levelling and the occasional l3wt runs not that boring.  Outside of that there has to be a lot to do, and not just crafting wise, but little fun things multiple players can do like minigames and stuff, maybe pets and therein activities involving pets...  And lots and lots of character customization.  I don't wanna look like anyone else in the game.  I typically bring lots of friends with me to new MMORPG's, so there'd have to be ways for us all to have fun.  Preferably 3D just 'cuz it's more immersive, but I do like 2D too.  So let's go over this.

    • Upbeat Anime stylings, preferably 3D with well designed characters and backdrops perfect for every situation.
    • Still a heavy emphasis on battling and being powerful warriors if you so choose, with a fun yet fast paced battle system that makes levelling not so mind numbing.
    • Lots of content outside of traditional warrior roles, beyond but including crafting.  Mini-games, Pets, contests and friendly community events.
    • Enough character customization so that no two characters will ever look the same...unless they want to.  To be able to build anyone that you could imagine!  This one's important to me.
    • Guilds, obviously, as well as smaller organizations like more permanent versions of parties and such, and activities and ways for them to customize themselves and have unique representations.  (Maybe a pet that can only be owned by a 'team' of 6 or more players and would be classified as the mascot, or a special battle move that compounds the skills of players running around as a trio.)

    Jesis that's a lot.  That I sorta doubt will ever be actually, you know, made...any programmers out there with a lot of free time?  I'm a very capable 2D and 3D artist. :D;

In an MMORPG, i want real time fighting. I want nice land, that varies, and nice weapons. Also, updates. that is the hardest thing to find. I want a game that has an update constantly, like tournaments, new quests, a twist to the plot every so often. One thing gets me in all games that i hate. Leveling. It is such a pain, and really boring (most of the time). I myself don't know anything besides leveling to seperate a veteran player from a beginnger except pure skill, but when i do, i will take it over leveling. Graphics don't really matter to me as much az the gameplay does, so i would play a good game even if it was a text game. Maybe i'll get bored over the summer and learn programming to make an MMORPG. over a couple years.

image Stuff like fesivals or an intro of a new monster or a monster that comes out only once a year or free itams for the first 100000 people to log in day.

image Basically I want an MMORPG world thats alive and constantly changing.

image Alas there is no such world *sigh* oh well, back to grinding.

Yes, you should have included Dark-n-Light, Wish and possibly Saga of Ryzom in your poll. Being as it may, I was looking forward to SoR until I spent the last 6 weeks in open beta and was disappointed in the development of the game. There is still hope since Nevrax pushed the release date back to September of this year to try and fix all the bugs and server problems. I have really jumped onto the EQ2 band wagon after doing more research into the game. If SOE can provide better customer service with EQ2, then EQ2 will probably be the #1 or #2 mmorpg this year.

What do I want in an mmorpg?

    1. Put the "rp" back into the mmorpg please. Role playing is supposed to be an identifying part of an mmorpg so put the "rp" back into it or at least have a couple of dedicated role play serversimage.
    2. Better combat or more diverse combat. Raise your hand and please step forward if you find that the combat gets boring in an mmorpg after a while. Don't limit combat moves to just 2 or 3 distinct graphics. A fighter attacking with his/her sword should not look the same as one attacking with a mace or fail. I realize that time is spent into putting content into the game by devs, but how hard would it be to add in a few more combat moves devs?
    3. PC story and history. Why not make us pcs part of the story of the game that other pcs can read about in books or hear about in taverns. A high level pc or pc that has accomplished and completed great quests, done heroic or infamous deeds should be noted in the game and written down as part of the story and history. It would add a twist on achieving higher levels and might keep players playing longer over the life of the game. This was supposed to be in SoR as part of the content, but I have yet to see it and wonder if it will be included in the final version due to be released in September. I have a feeling that some of the upcoming mmorpgs will also include this to some degree, and I hope so. This would add more depth and feel to the mmorpg.
    4. More intelligent mobs and npcs.
    5. Better customer service. If I pay for the game and then an additional $10 to $15 US per month or more, a company, for example SOEimage, should be able to hire and maintain a competent customer service and support team!!!
    6. Depth and content. Companies don't need to just throw out an expansion pack to just put one out or make money. Listen devs, if you work on putting good content, story and depth in the game to start off with we will play and keep paying to play. Then if you put out an expansion pack that really adds to the story and depth of the game, guess what? We will buy it and play even longer. When I play an mmorpg, I want to feel like I'm part of another world, role playing another character and persona that I can't in this real world, and that I'm accomplishing something more that killing X # of mobs per X # of hours to gain X # of experience to reach X level. Give me quests that worthy of bards to sing about in taverns and the courts of kings and queens. If I am a noble knight or paladin, then let the npcs and pcs cheer me and speak of my noble and good deeds. Yet if I'm an assassin or thief, or evil necromancer, let those same pcs and npcs fear me and warn others of my actions and infamy. Unless, I'm a low level noob with no rep yet. Just a thought.image

    Well thats my pennies' worth.
