After playing MMOs for about 4 years now, I thought I was ready when I heard about the KR graphics update, so I plunged myself into good olde Britannia... and boy was I wrong. Playing about a dozen MMOs I still felt like I was blind and dumb. Just as a sidenote, maybe they should make a tutorial which really explains the games functions, since they are so unlike anything else, but that just as a sidenote. A real noob is VERY lost in Britannia, be it not for the many kind players.
Anyways, here is a host of things I wasnt able to figure.
1) How can I travel? I am on this Island Haven or what. (I played the old Ultimas, but I cant for the love of the virtues recall that city.) I have seen several boats, but I cant seem to travel, I went to the Moongate, but I didnt know any of those places, so I didnt use it. I am a Paladin btw. So, maybe someone can describe me travel, please, but please in detail. I got some general answers like "use the tithe on the book", and I had NO idea what a tithe is or what I should do with said book. As I said, I am a total noob, and nothing here is as I know it.
2) I heard I can train skills for coin. How do I do it? I know I can use the phrase "NPC-name train ability", and he says I do it for 100 gold but I was unable to give him them gold. How is this done?
3) Where can I sell loot? I didnt find any vendor, maybe Haven as starter area has none, but is there a NPC I can sell my loot for cash, and how is this made?
4) It seems my armor decays from use, so what NPC repairs it and how?
5) Horses, everyone tell me I need one, so where do I get one cheap starter horse?
6) Where can I learn new skills/attacks/spells? I seem to have some skills and some spells in my book of chivalry, but where can I buy more? Since apparently there are no "levels", what is the mechanics for growing and learning new abilities?
Btw, after a while of playing my mouse pointer is gone. Any advise?
Sorry for the many questions, but UO plays like a sudeko riddle.

This will help alot , try reading the first one , then dig into the second one , I will admit to you UO has ALOT to learn for a new player , it will take some time and some frustrating moments but it is a real fun game , What shard did you select i'm sure theres someone on that shard/server who could help you out more?

Theres 3 main ways of travel , Walk , Horse , magic travel ( threw moongates , rune books ,which can be bought at player vendors)
2) I heard I can train skills for coin. How do I do it? I know I can use the phrase "NPC-name train ability", and he says I do it for 100 gold but I was unable to give him them gold. How is this done?
Right click on vendor , and if has a skill you can learn it will be seen as white not greyed out) , select the skill , NPC will spam how much it costs ,You take the gold and drop it on him/npc,
3) Where can I sell loot? I didnt find any vendor, maybe Haven as starter area has none, but is there a NPC I can sell my loot for cash, and how is this made?
You can sell loot and items either from a vendor , which requires a house or renting one from a player or you can sell items at local bank , which you can get to threw moongates ( closest one is Malas city and town of Luna or you can travel using rune books that allow you to go from one place to another.
4) It seems my armor decays from use, so what NPC repairs it and how?
The best way to do this is find a vendor ( see above) in malas/luna and look for item repair deeds , they come in different types blacksmithy ,tailor , and so on.
5) Horses, everyone tell me I need one, so where do I get one cheap starter horse?
Once again for now luna/ malas is a good place to start , once you come out of the moongate , travel north and you will see a stable, with a npc there , right click on the npc and you should see a option to buy a pet , horses cost 500-800 gold..
6) Where can I learn new skills/attacks/spells? I seem to have some skills and some spells in my book of chivalry, but where can I buy more? Since apparently there are no "levels", what is the mechanics for growing and learning new abilities?
Its based on your overall skill level , the more you use it the more you gain in skill and can use the higher up level skill/ spells , you can go to towns , and right click on npc's and learn certain skills.
1) Moongates are the newbie way to travel. They are placed throughout the lands so you can take shortcuts in traveltime.
So to get off haven easiest way is a Moongate to another town.
2) is a bit trickier - if you are on a quest to gain skills you cannot buy skills - not sure if that is documented, but a problem many players have
3) Provisioners buy almost anything. Clicking on them with the sell menu or saying 'vendor sell' should work
4)No NPC repairs, but players can make repair deeds which you can use to repair things in the appropriate places.
Metal armor repaired at smiths, leather armor at tailors. Should not cost more than 100-300 coins a deed normally.
6)Your chivalry book has all chivalry spells - for mage books with skill 10 you can cast lvl 1 spells reliably. skill 20 lvl 2 spells and so on
To the guy above:
First of all Gates are the newbie travel?!?!!? I been playing for some time now and have fully developed pvp and pve toons about ten of em to be exact and I still use Gates on a few. Expl... My Ninjitsu,Archer has no way to recall other then using a charge on my book so if im in no rush i still use gates to save on recall scrolls.
To the OP:
Your Chiv book has all the "spells" you need as a paladin. You will need other "skills" to make a full template with chivalry.
Expl..
Chivalry 100-120
focus 100-120(for mana and stamina regen)
some type of combat skill(swords,Fencing,Macing)
healing (Exatly what is say's) uses bandages
Anatomy ( to make your healing better and pretty much necicary with any toon with healing.)
and prolly resisting spells
Not sure if there are others that would be a better fit for the last as I don;t typicaly play dexxers (Mages FTW)
You get all the spells available to a paladin when you get the chiv book and same goes for ninjitsu,Bushido, but as for Necromancer books and mage books you get a starter book when you start a mages toon but it will only have 10 spells and if your buy a necro book or mages book they are empty you need to either make or buy the scrolls to place in it. the later is not so easy for a new player so just go to luna and find a player's vendor and buy all the scrolls you need for you mage and necro books.
A note on what the guy above said about the 10 you cast 1st circle spells and 20 you cast 2nd cirlce spells take that to heart. I other words don't go right out and buy 8th circle spells for a toon with only 20 magery it will be a wast of gold for you as a new player who wont be able to cast those for some time. My advice is alway's keep you book one cirlce higher then you can cast then you wont wast money but will still have the higher spells to use and gain from.

Just one little thing I wanted to add since you went Pallie...you must have tithing to use your paladin skills. To get tithing you have to go to a shrine and give money. You pretty much get one tithing skill for one gold coin, being a pallie gets to be expensive.
To use a shrine you have to know the "mantra" which is a phrase you say out loud while on the stairs so you can access the shrine. Once you're on the shrine you click on the Ankh and there should be an option to give tithing. Select that and put in the amount you wish to give. Supposedly there is a limit to the amount of tithing you can have but I haven't seen one yet.
Getting gold isn't so hard in this game as others, kill lots and lots of rats *grins*. In the beginning if you're still in Haven you can go to Old Haven and kill the skeletons and zombies too. If you're out in the world you can probably take on a Headless One but Ogres and Ettins might be rough. Mongbats make great targets and always have coinage.
The best pallie "spell" in the beginning is Recall which if you use on a rune can take you back to that location. To get a rune that is "marked" you buy a rune from a vendor and use the "mark" spell to mark the location you want the rune to take you to. A rune book is nothing more than a collection of marked runes.
As for a horse, be careful with that...you are a "young" player so aggressive monsters won't attack you but they will your horse if you're not riding him. Also if you don't feed it to make it bond to you it will run away or disappear if you log out of the game not riding it or having it stabled. If you stable your pet it is 30g per real week's time and you can get free wheat to feed your pet from the fields around town.
UO is really not an easy game to learn and people could write for hours on how to play the game. I only survive because my husband has been playing since the Beta and has characters who can pretty much help me with anything I might need.
I have found that there are really nice, helpful and generous people on UO so normally if you're around a bank you may get free items or ask people for help. UO is very hard by yourself and it is much easier if there is someone who can help you or answer questions you may have. I even had a complete stranger give me gold and a horse on one of my toons.
I'm not sure what shard you are on or if you play Trammel or Felucca but I am sure that there are people there that would be more than happy to help you get your bearings in the game.
Edit: As for the horse, you can fight while riding your horse, you just won't be able to parry so you could just always ride the horse.
