New MMORPG fad

With most of the new games that have come out, (City of Heros, Horizons, Lineage II, etc) it seems as though these games are just plain bad when in comparison to the older mmorpgs.  These games seem to go for amazing graphics but leave out 1 very important factor... gameplay, and often "phat loot".  Please feel free to post your comments and opinions on this subject.

I think it only applies for those games, we're in a sort of a transitional period. Once eq2, wow, ect come out it, it should be heck of alot better.

I'd agree with the graphics thing but also have to say as far as graphics go they're not even doing good graphics RIGHT.  They're doing the same old stylings as they've been doing for ages, many of which STILL look ugly, and just adding polys.  But anyway.  Personally I could care less for the phat l3wt.  I don't know if moving away from older MMORPGs is a BAD thing, but I'm pretty sure whichever direction they're going in at this moment...is a very good one.

I havent played Horizons but i dont hear much good about it. IMO CoH is the shallowest and most dumbed down boredom inducing MMORPG released to date, and L2 is jsut a massive Adena whore game... i mean theres people who make a living off of running around exploiting PVP systems and stuff and kill steal/whore just to get more adenas to sell on ebay... thats sad.

I agree some of the older games don't have good graphics but are fun to play, but i think future games such as EQ II, WoW, and Guild Wars will have good graphics and good game play.

Agreed on that sense, and I cannot wait until EQ2, I am hoping I get into the beta.  But on the same note I hope it is nothign like EQ1 Because I could not stand that game.

I wouldn't call CoH dumbed down. It has one of the best and definately one of the most fun combat systems in any MMORPG I have played. I am afraid I do have to agree with shallow though. The story line and contacts are well done, but that is all there is to the game. I really have to wonder what designers are thinking will keep people playing long term. Fun combat is good, but not enough to keep you going. You have to find ways for people to continually improve their characters, and that is hard to do without any real loot.

I do hope designers pick up on CoH's fun combat, advancing story line, and multiple mob fights (much more fun to be more powerful than mobs your level instead of them being much more powerful than you), but add something to keep the game exciting and fresh for the long term.

Ya the combat wasnt bad but it has no longevity, it wont last unless they add something to keep people really interested. The missions are very boring and extremly repetative and only being able to kill things get boring pretty fast without getting any loot. Everyone loves loot :p
