There is always a significant section of the forum for whom any critiscism of their favourite past time is an act of heresy.
Heretics must be burnt.
Some of them feel that the survival of their game is dependant on good publicity, some of them feel that since they invest so much of their own personal time in the game, that any critiscism of it demeans their own life commitment. Some of them feel jealous that other people may have further intrests in life "outside of the lovely game community".
Mostly I think it's a rejection thing.
When a person leaves, he is rejecting the community he leaves behind. People can't handle it if you tell them you have something better to do than hang out with them.
It's a reaction to rejection. People do not like to be left behind. They often deal with people not wanting their company by hating them. It's an emotional self defence mechanism. A way of coping with the idea that there may be better things in life than what you are doing, without actually having to address it. "He doesn't really have anything better to do, he is just an idiot". "We never liked you anyway. We are glad you have left". As long as it is them that are the losers in this picture, it's not you.
They might say stuff like this, but it is in everyway clear that this is the opposite of their actual feelings. Just like your girlfriend says "I hate you, I never want to see you again" because you won't come over and shag her tonight. (Because the football is on).
She's a rational and intelligent being in full grip of her mental facilities. She knows what she is saying and she means it. Only she doesn't. You have to learn to read between the lines.
Hey everyone, I am leaving these following games just so everyone knows:
EVE Online Worlds of Warcraft Dungeons and Dragons Online Lord of the Rings Online Vanguard Second Life Dark and light Archlord Everquest Everquest 2 Planetside Lineage II Guild Wars Rappelz Space Cowboy Flyff
Can I have your stuff?
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
If they are one long rants and sobbing whines, ( and you can mostly tell within the first sentence ), I just do not read them.
On the other hand if they are constructive, well written and have apparently valid reasons to why they leave I usually do read them.
The "can I have your stuff" people I despise a lot more, and I do mean a LOT.
As someone pointed out, the reasons for leaving are often very subjective and chances are they will not apply to me at all, but then again they migth, and if it is an intelligent post then it is surely worth my time regardless.
The knee jerk reactions from the lameboys though, well lets not go there.
But if the poster who says "goodbye" and eloquently tries to explain why is a sad attention whore then people who take the time to reply to a post they feel have no validation what so ever with less then witty remarks is a waste of skin.

My biggest problem with the "I'm quitting" posts is when the poster has a ridiculously egocentric outlook and they generalize their own opinions and extrapolate them to the rest of the game's community. It's cool if someone doesn't like a game, and decides to move on to something else and wishes to say some parting words before they leave. But when people start making generalizations, like this for example: "This game is just going downhill, I see a lot of people quitting for the same reasons, my guild has lost nearly half of its member in the last 2 months, people are just losing interest in the game."
In those types of posts, the poster assumes that because he/she and a few guildies left the game, that the entire game's population is waning. It's even more comical when people say those types of things about a game like Warcraft, which keeps growing in subscriber numbers every month. The problem is that the poster is unable to see things beyond the scope of their own opinion, and they assume that just because they dislike something, that everyone else must also dislike it.
Because there are many corny ass people that play MMOs. Why would you get pissed because of their post? It's not possible for someone to like a game but find problems with it? If nobody ever complained about anything nothing would evolve. Companies would never try to make their products better. The people who get pissed about the "I'm Leaving" posts are just haters. They can't stand to see someone say anything bad about "their game." MMOs attract retarded people... look at all the WAR vs AOC threads/posts.

I believe you are correct (and the others who hold a similar view).
It's this need for attention coupled with the idea that something they wanted to like isn't exactly what they wanted. so they post this manifesto on how the game sucks for them and that the developers useless, etc.
As far as "it's the only way that the developers know that their game is horrible", that is pretty much beyond the pale in thinking.
I don't know why it is that most mmo players feel that the forums are the only place where they can get help or express their opinion of the game to the developers.
Customer Service.
you want to leave because of bad classes, no balance, etc? Just contact customer service. Or submit a letter to the company. No reason to stand on a soapbox and decry the game where no one will take you seriously. How many of you live in a city? Have you ever seen the people who carry around signs badmouthing the government or saying that a certain "even" was a conspiracy?
Well, these people might be right. However, no on even listens to them because they think they are just nuts or want attention. There are better venues for your frustration.
Public forum is not one unless you are in a thread where the issues you are interested in are being discussed. otherwise, no one cares.
Most well balanced people say goodbye to their fans in game, cancel the account. Maybe right a letter to the developer.
Otherwise, to me, it's just grandstanding.

I think the same as the above two guys.

People who really leave and quit just do so without fanfare.
The ones who claim they are leaving never give me their stuff.
