Maybe I should score the internet for this but oh well...if I am a pirate, can I go to a spanish port, british port etc. Can pirates own the factorys for creating lumber, stone etc? I remember seeing that you would be able to do a quest, or pay a certain amount of cash to learn other languages..but if im a Spanish merchant, can I sell ammunition to a pirate?

Good question, can guilds flag certain people to not attack them? Maybe a spainish merchant likes to bring goods into a pirate area and that would help pirates of a guild not attack their "helpers" from different nations.
Any player can enter any port, and the ports themselves are safe -- there is no fighting in them. You have to sail to the port, and you are more likely to run into NPC ships that don't like you if sail an aother nation's area. And if you try to get into a port through a PvP zone, pirates have a larger zone where they can get attacked by other players. (One thing that isn't often mentioned: If you are in a fast ship, you can often run away from a PvP fight you got yanked in to. Of course, fast ships have fewer guns and smaller holds...)
Pirates can build structures and produce things, just like the other nations.
Buying and selling either happens between players or in auctions in ports. Pirates can list things in auctions just like any other players. But you can only use auction houses (list things for sale or buy things) if you have a good enough reputation with that nation's trading faction. Pirates start out pretty low in faction standing with other nations. So you can get into any port you want to. But you may not be able to sell/buy things in the auction there. You change faction standing by killing that nation's NPC's (bad), taking certain missions with their merchants (good), stuff like that.
So the safest way for a pirate is to build structures in pirates ports and trade (auction) in pirate ports. And maybe less profitable.
Brits can trade to pirates the same way. Anybody that can use an auction at all can buy and list. Brits could bring in stuff to sell in pirate ports and vice versa, as long as they have improved their faction standing enough to do it.

There's no game way for guilds to mark somebody as "safe". And in-game guilds can only be of one nation, so there would be no way to invite a foreigner into the guild, either. The guild could certainly tell their people that so-and-so is helping us, so leave him/her alone...
thank you very much mike

Yeah because it's not like you could read the really long thread on the offical forums site titled: Player Owned Economy
Yep that info isn't covered there.. you got him

Close. I'm a dev (a coder, not a designer). All the info I posted is publically available on our site. I work on the auctions and economy, among other things, so I care about how the economy is perceived. And I get excited when people seem to get excited about it -- I think it is very cool.
Haven't laughed so much in a while, KEOGH and HANDSOMEROB what a pair of muppets well done guys for being so constructive.
Nice reply from MIke, well structured and to the point, can't wait for release...

I should be more obvious about being a dev. For anybody else, it *would* a breach of the NDA (as I understand things). Short reply: No, the economy is not reset when the world resets. Port ownership does have an impact on what you can access, though. When ports change hands, you may be affected, and you may want to prepare for that. In general, you can't play Pirates without having the port conquest subgame affect you to some degree. But while you can't totally ignore it, you don't have to get very involved in it. You can set yourself up so port changes don't affect you as much.
For details, look at our web site. Or just come play when we open.
Thanks for the reply. So just like in real life, real estate is location, location, location
