A couple of questions from an ancient gamer?

ttomm46ttomm46 Member UncommonPosts: 446

Hi

I'm a 61 year old gamer and was wanting to ask a couple of questions...

Are there any older players playing and are there some guilds with mature players..I'm not exactly that great at using fast reflexes like teen agers...So I may be limited to being a super player.

I did try LOTR but my biggest complaint there were the little hitching glitches while moving....Also I'd like to make some friends there....thanks

Tom

I think the average age for DDO is around 30 .  And there are plenty of guilds specifically for older players so you're not alone.

Yep, honestly brother, I'd say the average gamer in DDO is your MMO median plus about 15.  Most of my guildies are married and have kids, and some even have kids with kids.

    Still sounds good..thanks

While I would still say perhaps most DDO players are adults, I have to say that since the server merge I've been... disappointed... with what I see running around Stormreach. Character names like Myjohnson Isbig, or a cleric named Firstaidkit, and those are just the two most recent ones that make me shake my head. I can't help but think they're just stupid kids, but then again, never underestimate the stupidity of the general public, right? I haven't grouped with any of those people yet to find out their age, although I did see a quest yesterday in the LFG tool that said "kids only" for their Harbor quests.

I randomly chose Thelanis a few months ago when I started, and coming from WoW and GW with their childish in-game communities, names, etc. I was pleased at Thelanis' maturity. Apparently that wasn't the case on the other servers who just merged into Thelanis.

I think there are many more "older" gamers than a lot of players think.  Not as many as the under 40 crowd, but we over 40 are here and have been since the start.  When we started computers were really only for those in the field of using the technology , now it is as common as a PS2

I have found that there are many guilds made up of families and older players.   These groups/guilds are usually smaller than the guilds made up of the younger crowd but I also do not think the goal of the 2 types of guilds are the same and my tastes run more to-wards the guilds made up of more mature players and family run guilds.

.if you do some research...and by that I mean most games have web sites and most of these sites have guilds looking for members...

so first find a game that interests you and then look for a guild on the site.

Yeah I always join adult / mature guilds. Even then, I have my sticking points. I spent time on the LOTRO forums choosing a nice, mature and casual guild. Suddenly they start requiring us to login to the guild Ventrilo server (uh, hello? LOTRO has voice chat?) anytime we're logged into the game. WTF? I have /g to chat with you guys, I have zero need to have to turn off the music and sound effects because you guys want me on your Ventrilo server. *poof* I'm gone. Luckily I found another group who, like myself, are ex-hardcore raiders and while we're all for raiding, we want to enjoy the game, the guild, and not live to raid 24/7.

For DDO, I spent some time on the forums as well, and there were actually two or three guilds I was strongly debating, and I wound up deciding on Umber Hulks, which again is a mature, friendly, casual community ran by a husband and wife team. I've had a great time chatting with them so far, and I'm looking forward to getting my characters high enough to actually participate in a guild run with them all.

I'd have to check the Thelanis forum for the exact name, but I seem to recall a DDO guild something along the lines of Old School Gamers or Old Farts Gamers. LOL. I'm sure they should be listed on the Thelanis Guilds thread, and I'm sure any of the other DDO servers would have adult guilds, I just haven't made characters anywhere but Thelanis yet.

I've always been very youthful-minded (my girlfriend sighs and says "immature" but I like my version better) I just never liked dealing with the screaming, swearing, singing kiddies. Even with Xbox Live, I *very rarely* joined a public game and was very excited to find AGE for my console gaming.

well I cant say much about other servers but on the ghallanda server I know two players that are over 50.  one use to run with the truth guild and the other is in oblivion.  Most of the players that I play with are in there late 20’s and 30’s.  but unlike the younger players most of the groups I have been with don’t mind having older people in the party.  On the other hand it has been common to see younger players dumped from groups.

no one plays ravenmist, a ranger... he also has a bard the other is magalantic in the oblivion guild.  but if you are going to go on the ghallanda server hook up with some of the oblivion guys they will point you the rigth way.  but they are all hard core gamers mosty from other games.  a good guild to hook up with would be fellowship of the bling they are a very laied back group with again mosty late 20's and early 30's
