Funcom has to turn overflow away from Age of Conan demo

Funcom had a scheduled 1 hour demo session scheduled at DragonCon Sunday for it's upcoming Age of Conan MMO.  They ended up doing 3 45 minute sessions to accomodate the crowd and still had to have the police brought in to turn away those who couldn't get in to one of th sessions.  Not clear whether the game itself or the fact that they were showing off rather *cough*realistic*cough* female avatars for the 1st time was the draw.

Probably was a bit of both. I'm sure some were attracted by the topless ingame females, but only a relative few would wait for nearly an hour just to get a glimpse of pixelated tits.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

ROFL!! God that was funny! Thank you :-)

Just for the heck of it I am going to go out on a limb here and predict that AoC fails while WAR prevails and neither will put a dent in WoW.

    Flame on!

    QFT.

I highly doubt a game with sys requirements like AoC will pull many from WoW.  War will definately get alot of curious WoWers, but after a few weeks or months, they'll come crawling back to WoW.

Want a WoW killer? SC2.  kthx.

Heh anyone who stands in a line that long to play a video game, well, thats probably the most exercise theyve had in the last year.

ROFL the PC's at Dragon*Con were running WinXP with 2 gigs of memory, and the video card is a 7900 GTS. Think that these is massive system requirements? think again.

You could probably play it with your computer, just not at uber high settings. Most people should be able to play it, but they will actually have to compromise graphics settings.

I lol'd at the mention of Police at DragonCon. I bet they had 0 problems shoo'ing away all those geeks.

Looking forward to presentation coverage. :)

Nope, but it seems like they were pretty eager to get a look at the pixelated tits if so only on a few pics.

Just about nothing will put a big dent in WoW's fanbase.

WAR is mostly aimed at a very certain group of Warhammer fans, I'd say.

AoC I know nothing about, but there are some things in it that bother me already.

But, police at a geek-fest.  I wonder how many girlie-giggles the police got, or snorting.

default Thanks to all who supported Conan at DragonCon

Thanks everyone who came out to the booth and saw the game.

Extra big thanks to those who came to our panel on Sunday. So many in fact the Atlanta police had to turn people away because the line in the hall was a fire hazard. My apologies to those of you who got turned away, I would have loved to have gotten to show all of you the game.

And of course thanks to Wexx for trading us his first born child for a hope at a Conan beta key

And Emberens for making the great reports on the days of the show. Look forward to seeing the video.

It's funny how a LOT of random AoC info threads (same in WAR forum I guess, dont visit there tho) get turned into a AoC vs. WAR thing for atleast a few reply's.

Well probably the best boobs will be something you either get for pre-order box purchases or else via micro transactions. So it might be more a matter of money than which game for your virtual viewing pleasure.

Maybe boobs IS the second generation of MMORPGs we've all been waiting so long for!

No flaming... just a point in your argument.

WoW only has about 4 million customers in NA and the EU... this comprises about 75% of their monthly revenue. If AoC and WAR take 500K a piece (pretty reasonable) That is 20% of WoWs monthly income. I would say that is a pretty significant dent. If one of the games is a hit and draws close to a million... You could easily look at 30 - 40% of WoWs revenue drained from them. Subscriber numbers != revenue. While WoWs numbers may suffer only a minor hit... their revenue could take a beating.

I tried to take camera shots of the demo.  I got in the first session (for any of you guys who were there,  I was the one who won the  nVidia 8600 GTS!)  I was one of the last of the people they let in and I arrived a little over an hour ahead of time.

the demo was projected on to a screen I think at 1024x768, I was in the back and there were a lot of heads in the way. Unfortunately, I gave up recording because it was hard enough to get a glance without the camera.

I did meet someone who was about 3 or 4 rows back from the front who got a lot of the demo.  I spoke with him after the demo and he said he would post it on youtube and also on the Funcom AoC forums.

what they showed off for the first time were a lot of shots of the female avatar in the different class outfits.  They also showed off for the first time some new finishing moves and discussed finishing moves for dual wielded weapons that are in production.

Honestly, if it was the girl, that's probably the funniest thing i've read this month. And with WoW, nothing needs to be a killer. A lot of games do kill it, I never saw what was so great about it. I got to the end game-content before BC, but it still seemed terribly boring.  I honestly didn't think it was anything special, and so you don't call me a fanboy of some other game, i'm currently not playing a single MMO. And I dislike most.

What like ground hog day 2005 ? Nah that game will die one day and everyone will move on to pastures and  bloody fields anew. Maybe something with more reading, could improve the WoW kids literacy levels...

I was leaning against the wall just ahead of Rayxor in the 1st session.  Didn't take any pics in the presentation room but here is the hall a few minutes before:

Could we stay on topic, please? As I recall, this thread was not about WoW in any way.

And that is something that I'm sure some people would not mind seeing.   Even combined AoC and WAR won't kill WoW, the game is just too big and furthermore it's backed by Blizzard.  But WoW has been resting on their laurels for more than 2 years now.  2008 will be when Blizzard Devs Kaplan and Chilton will finally have to prove that their EQ-based, raid-dungeon, grinding-timesink gameplay is what people really want.

And with games like AoC offering players alternatives, I think they're going to be in for a little surprise when they learn their efforts to barinwash players into swallowing raid-dungeon grinding haven't been as effective as they might have liked.
