Vanguard: Is now the time to go back?

Hey fellas,

I was just wondering if now is the time to give Vanguard the second chance i think it deserves.

Is the performance better?

Hows the population?

Are the classes balanced?

Thanks!!!

i just started playing it and Im loving it.

Performance is pretty decent... just had to completely overhaul the .ini file to get a steady 25 fps

Population is pretty good too.  I have seen quite a few people on who were in the lower teens (around my level).  I am playing on Xeth.

Started playing last week, now the owner of a 14 Disciple. So far, having great fun. Game runs well on:

    Intel 1.8Ghz dual-core

    Asus ATI X1650 Pro

    1Gb DDR2

I'm not a God of Overclocking/Tweaking or anything, and it reaches 40ish fps 1024x768 on balanced detail/very high textures (20-30 in towns). The same on 1280x1024, low detail/balanced textures. I haven't tweaked the ini yet.

I've had the occasional crashes (I'd estimate that I crash once every 4/5 hours), and one quest I couldn't complete due to an inaccessible area: When my petition came through they reset the whole chunk just to solve my problem!

Well, technically they did that to solve the problem for everyone who was on that quest as well, but I like to say "GM's reset servers on my request MUAHAHAHA"...

The only thing that seriously annoyed me was the downloading of the game. 8Gb of cabinet files from a server that spews data at a whopping 200kbit/s (I have an 8Mbit line)- only to find Data2.cab to be corrupted, which ends in hoping that the tiny bit that *was* installed included the launchpad so you can let *that* download the unpacked files, which requires it to restart manually ever 30 minutes. It took me A WEEK total to get it to work (also, you may need to download d3dx9_31.dll from dll-files.com or something)

But when that was over and done, I had and am still having a lot of fun.

Now playing: City of Heroes/Villains, Age of Conan

Played: Eve, Hg:L, Vanguard, WoW, FFXI, Planetside, Neocron, Battlezone, EQII, AO, CoX, AA, DDO

    I win at Vanguard.

Personally, I'm waiting for SOE to offer me a "come back for a month free" type of deal before I try it out again.

Not because I think that they owe me anything (please just shut up now if you plan to flame that... I don't care what you think about SOE)... but rather because I think SOE is going to wait until they're happy with the game before they make that offer.  When they're comfortable enough with the state of the game to make such an offer, I'll give it another shot.

Things are better but personally if you have doubts, wait till the 14 day trial comes in.

It also promises better performance as well.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

If you don't have a high-end system, I would wait until Update #3 and the Trial. Otherwise, come join the fun!

I did that .ini modification and it didn't do squat for me. Here is the thread if you want to try http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=10869

However, I ran into this and it did wonders for me. Just delete your .ini altogether and let the game patch you a new one. For whatever insane reasons this worked on my new PC. Here is the link if you want to read it... http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=17145  The game runs almost as smooth as LotR now although only on Balanced/med settings but heck, I'll take what I can get with this game. I'm also running on a pretty high resolution (1650x1050) and getting around 30-40FPS. (I still hit those "chunk" things but its not to bad now) Why it worked, I haven't a clue but it did. Make sure you save whatever you change just in case.

(also I noticed doing a /flush seems to help when it starts to get a bit sluggish. Something else I noticed is the game seems to take about 5 minutes or so to "settle down" when you first log in. It appears to smooth out after that. This is the most bizarre behaving games I have ever run across...it has different issues for different reasons at different times)

For me the biggest change from a few months back is the server merges.  With that happening I can now actualy find groups at 31.. and on alts I have seen alot more people in the lower lvs to group with.  On top of that some other changes and performance issues are definantly noticable... I don't think the game is near where it needs to be, but it's on its way forsure and just getting better and the fact that I can group and enjoy the funner content, makes it worthwhile now when i have time.

    Hi

I started to play vanguard a month before and i must say, i love it. I cant play with full details, but it looks like good as the other MMO´s at the moment.... (In two month i got a new PC :-) )

The World is fantastic and you have much to do...

since the servermerge there are many people online (night and Day). Since last week i am never alone and have much more fun than before

I am happy that i bought the game

To the OP - I agree with pretty much everything that's already been said in the thread with regards to performance and population post merge, but IMO the classes aren't balanced.

There has been some improvements in balance recently (for instance rogues got some love in GU2) but there are still some stark imbalances within archtypes (for instance in the healers category, cleric>>disciple). Having said that tho - every class is still useful and Im sure that out of the 14 classes available there will be one thats fun for you - its just that some have a harder time soloing than others.

This game is hot, I still pause and just look around.  The server merge was great, I’m finding groups every night.  Game performance and stability has greatly improved, but it isn’t 100%.  The game is alive and there seems to be an endless amount of things to do.

I got a card in the mail with Come back to us for 2 FREE months for EQ2 & Vanguard, I re-installed EQ2 and have been playing it off and on. I will not be touching Vanguard even if they offer to pay me to play, to me going back to this game is like going back to Chernobyl after the nuclear explosion - yes I could, but would I want to ?

Yes.  Now is the time to come back to Vanguard.  Since the mergers and Game Update 2, the game has gotten a LOT better.

All you're doing is denying yourself a (potentially) good game because it wasn't good a year ago. Not going back because "EQII is more my style" makes a whole lot more sense.

Also: plenty of people play S.T.A.L.K.E.R., so your analogy is flawed.

Hopefully these server mergers help get some new life into the dev process, although I'm not coming back until the CTD bugs are worked out. I'm glad they are trying to get this game back on its feet, but there is still a lot of work to be done to get back to a decent sized player base.

  • mcr525mcr525 Member Posts: 117

I went back to give ity another try last week and I am really enjoying it this time round. However I would like to add that I have a LOT of ctd's. Sometimes every few mins. Yes, I have tried .ini tweaks etc but it doesnt really help. It's very much a random thing though as sometimes it happens every few mins and sometimes I can play for hours without a crash. So my conclusion is that it's a great game but still very unstable on my decent PC.

Interesting...may need to fire it up and look around again...if i can find out what server mine merged into.

    Woefeather was it's name

I can't believe this game STILL has so much work needed?! How were they EVER expecting it to last?

You missed my point entirely - STALKER is a great game but Chernobyl analogy had to do with horrid, festering pile the game imploded into after release.

FYI - STALKER is based on a movie and a book and I have seen/read both. Besides I was 400km away when Chernobyl blew up - how's that for up close and personal ?

I never meant to discredit your knowledge of the Chernobyl meltdown or STALKER. I only meant to discredit your line of reasoning; Vanguard has been cleaned up very nicely and it's quite playable- to the point where a number of those who once thought it wasn't fun, now think that it is fun.

Chernobyl however may still be as void of fun as it was when it melted down, I'm not sure on that.

Well I did try to go back this week to VG couldnt remember my password though so asked for it to be reset and never got the e-mail with the new password,I tried 4 times in the space of 3 days and still never got an e-mail,I went to the VG forums and it seems quite a few ppl are having the same problem and no posts by SOE on what the problem is I guess they just cant be bothered.

Also I tried there european helpline but the number given on the offical forum page doesnt work

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I was aware of the EQ2 promotion, since I got one of those emails as well. While it did apologize for Vanguard, it did not mention anything about free Vanguard gametime. I would highly doubt SOE would offer a promotion for Vanguard so soon, since they are starving for paying subscribers.

Last I heard, SOE was working at a "Trial Island" starter area for Vanguard. I would imagine that once they offer a real trial, they will get more subscribers. Some time after this, they may send out emails inviting old players back for an extended trial.

Until then, I'm not touching Vanguard. I won a copy of Vanguard at Curse Gaming, and was looking forward to playing it. After a week, I bit the bullet and spent $50 for the game, since I assumed I could just return the copy from Curse at my local store. Wouldn't you know it, I never received my copy of Vanguard from Curse Gaming. Chalk up another site I don't visit anymore.
