Can't Install the *^%$ Game!!!

MadTwoMadTwo Member Posts: 6

I bought EQII yesterday and tried to install it.  I keep getting a Component Transfer Error and it always shows this when it tries to install the data7.cab file .  The error type says: Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check).

I have rebooted the computer, turned off my antivirus software and even defragmented my hard drive, yet I keep getting this error. I've even searched the hard drive to remove any partially-instaled files, but didn't find anything to remove.  Sony's knowledge base doesn't provide any help.

Can you guys provide some insight as to how to install this stupid thing?  I have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.

Search your drives for any virus infestations, and afterwards
disable the antivirus completely and try the installations again.

However it is far more likely to be a installshield problem...
In which case, you might try "installShieldFix".

    Luck!

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.

Return it to the store you bought it from as defective.

OMG, this just keeps getting worse!  I went to Sony's help website and tried to use their Live Chat feature.  It said they are open at 7 AM PDT.  It is currently 7:23 PDT and while their site indicates they are open, when I try to connect, I get an error message saying they are not open!!!!

    GGAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

The DVD drive, hard drive, IDE controller, SATA Controller, Cables, or media is bad.

My guess is the media and, coincidentally, it is probably the easiest to replace.  I would take it back saying it is defective and get a new one.  The point made above to disable antivirus to load anything is a good one.

    Otherwise,

    1. clean the disk really good.

    2. clean the DVD drive out with air.

    3. try another DVD Drive.

    4. try another hard drive (D instead of C)  <--- lots of assumptions made

    5. mess with the IDE setup.  (if the DVD drive is on IDE 1 move it to 2, etc)

    6.  Delete your DVD drive out of devices and let windows recreate

    7. check to make sure you have all chipset drivers loaded. (intel motherboards usually)

    8. try repairing disk corruption using windows recovery and chkdsk.

    9.   Use system restore to go back a few days.

    10. (getting thin now)  reload your hard drive.

    11.  buy a new motherboard.

I think that is it. If anyone else thinks I missed something, please post.

Edit - I just thought of one more fairly rare one.  Low power can make the southbridge go "looloo."  If none of the above works, try a more powerfull power supply.

I had the same problem when I installed, turns out that the DVD drive on one of my computers didn't like the disc.  I have 2 suggestions.

    1. If you have more then one computer in your house that is networks, share out the DVD drive from one and use it to install to the other.

    2.  Create a ISO of the install media and mount it using a virtual media mounting program.  I use dameon tools but there are plenty of them out there.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

This is the common syndrom of a scratched disk.  Try cleaning the disk surface, maybe it's just a spec of dust, if you are lucky this will do the trick.  If you just bought the game from a store, return it and tell them one of the disc is defective.

Grab the trial client and patch it up. After you register the game key when you make an account, the rest is pretty useless. After you register the key and run the launcher with your login info it will download the files you need. You can get the trial launcher from here.

It will take a bit to download the whole thing, but it works. When it finishes downloading everything it will be the full game, so don't worry about that. This is usually what I do now instead of installing off the 10CD version then patching up.

There are 2 things you can try.  First copy the entire contents of the DVD to your Hard Disk and run the install from there.

If that doesn’t work download the trial. All you really need is the launcher. There should be an option in the launcher to create a new account, just use the key from your DVD like you would normally.  Once you log in with this new account the launcher will install everything for you, but you may need to let it run overnight.

Okay, I got the client downloaded and account set up.  I'm on my way to download the full game.  Whee!

    Thanks for your help, guys.
