Final Fantasy XI was my very first MMO. I started playing FF in Oct 03 and quit in Oct 05. I have played many MMOs since quiting this and none have seemed to be as enjoyable as my time with FFXI and heres why. I love the way FF forces you to group. Yes this has downers but most of the time when I logged in and got a pt I would always make a new friend or two. In WoW for example I could go from lvl 1-20 and never even talk to anyone. My very first Job in FF 1-20 I had made quite a few friends and was in a good LS. Also I could get on and get into a party and grind for hrs. In most other games I could on solo grind for 20-30 min before I got bored and wanted something else to do.

I also loved how you played with people from all over the world. If I logged in after 12am est and got into a JP pt 90% of the time you knew you were about to go on a roller coaster ride (good thing).

Will I ever find another game as good  as FFXI?   /cry

Most people find that their first MMORPG is and will always be their favorite.  For me that's not the case, as my first was Runescape.  FFXI was about my 4th or 5th and it is definitely in my top 3.  You've pretty much already explained why.  The social interaction.  The sharing of severs with all nations, rather than just your continent/region, most importantly the Japanese (Simple and effective translator for this as well).  I also really enjoyed the story, both the main story through missions and the side quests.

It was a great game and you might never be able to replicate the feeling that your first MMORPG gave you.  There will likely be better games in the future, but it's doubtful that you will enjoy them as much.

Completley agree with this post.  Loved my first 2 mmo's (EQ & AO).  Tried to go back to em and found they were better left as fond memmories.

I fell in love with this game immediately, and still have nostalgic memories of playing it, but the gameplay and the community didn't totally win me over. It simply looked incredible, not just good graphics, but beautiful design and atmosphere. The items were also pretty cool. It was visually distinct, and that's hard for a lot of MMORPGs to do.

But it was also incredibly difficult to progress, or so I recall. Teaming was always either a disastrous or dull affair. Getting to a place where good exp could be had was a chore, and you had to grind there forever, until you level high enough to move onto the next place and grind some more. There wasn't any real motivation to keep playing. Not to mention that when they instill harsh exp penalites for death in a game that is incredibly conducive to death, it kind of makes me wonder what I did to make them want to frustrate me so greatly. That's the problem with a lot of MMORPGs I think, they are more concerned with making it difficult and stunting your progress in order to increase the life-expectancy of the game than actually making the game itself enjoyable and rewarding.
