So, I pre ordered EQ2 when it first came out. Was wondering if it's too late to catch up. I was level 46 as a summoner with 42 platinum (yes, i farmed frequently). How has the game evolved? What is fun about it? What are the cons? I need some convincing before i play it again as I am a full time student and only have time for ONE game.

Honestly, read this very board. Probably the only one on MMORPG.com that have something positive to say.

It is not at all too late to catch up!
I am level 26 now, and I was up until 4 a.m. in a dungeon in Stormhold because it was so much fun. Luckily, all of my classes on Tuesday are in the evening! (I am drinking coffee right now.) I should mention that I am only level 26 because I often turn off my experience to level more slowing. It is how much I enjoy the game. However, my friends I met in-game tell me the game really begins to shine around the 50s with all the content.
I have many friends who just joined. So many people are starting every day. I recommend you play on the Antonia Bayle server or the Nagafen server if you like PvP. Many servers are seeing a surge in population, but the two aforementioned in particular are popular.
For me is best game on the market right now. I have tried a lot, but Ill stick with EQ2 for a loong time.
You are in a great position to start again given the funding you have.
Just get the boxed EoF or the complete compilation from d2d and add it to your account.
I would recomend creating a new toon, in one of the new areas- this way you will be able to use all the newly added perks like AAs *wich you start earning at lvl10)- and the content is much more streamlined and enjoyable there.
And as i said- you have over 40 platinum, wich should make your early adventuring go smooth and fun as hell (first thing- get yourself a decent mount to help you travel fast- unless you roll one of the fast moving classes).
My thoughts as well//it really is the best MMO out there atm go back and enjoy it you wont believe how much has changed and changed for the better i might add.
If you are not on a pvp server and like to level with friends etc pve style this game is one of the best ones out there. There is so much content and lore you will be sucked in for a long time.
If you like to pvp and like a balanced pvp system don't waste your time. This game is far from balanced and you will get ganked by twinked out players that locked there exp and got AAs so that by the time they are 17 they really are a 23+ so anyone within 4 levels is toast. It is one of the reasons I no longer play Eq2. I am a casual player and I do not have the time to craft and twink out a char so I can compete in pvp.
I also have a very limited amount of time to play now adays and I love playing EQ2. You can log in for a few hours and actually accomplish something. There are tons of lower level players around. I very rarely have trouble finding a group. There are lots of lower level guilds recruiting all the time (at least on AB) so you should be able to find people to play with, not to mention the Mentoring system, which is absolutely great. I started playing around a month and a half ago and have been taking my time. Currently level 41 fury. The PvE content is pretty much endless, you would never have to do the same quests twice if you level in different areas for different characters. There are like a hundred dungeons. You can craft. You can RP. The game has come a long way since its release.
I am new to EQ2, and just had to come here and read the forums. I also agree with what everyone says.
Their forums are so full of positive remarks, helpful people.
The game itself is a dream come true for me...I have been looking for something that has so many features, and so much to do...
Crafting that don't suck, housing, the Achievement system, combat that is fun to watch and play, great graphics, runs well...small amounts of downtime..
No..I am here to stay at least for a while..finally something to do until the next gen MMO hits.
In all seriousness, many of us feel this way. Many of us have been looking for years (speaking for myself coming from EQ 1) for a game that offers the features that we all love in a game. It has been shocking for me that it was a game right in front of my nose, EQ II, that has everything that I was looking for jumping to DAoC to EVE to WoW to Vanguard to you name it.
What has changed in Everquest II since launch?
You can read more about this in the official forums HERE
Are my characters still there?
SOE realized long ago that people sometimes leave or take a break and decide to come back. They almost never delete your characters even after years and years. It is very likely that if you re-activate your old account your characters will be there waiting for you.
I am starting over again, which servers have the most players?
Information about the servers can be found HERE. Generally speaking Antonia Bayle is the most populated server (is RP preferred as well) in the USA. Splitpaw is the most busy in the UK and Venekor for PVP.
Do I need the expansions?
You don't need the expansions to enjoy Everquest II but it does make it allot better. With the first two expansions they have added the Alternative Advancement lines (AA's) and allot more content for higher level players. Echoes of Faydwer has added a whole new continent from level's 1-70. It also includes two new races the Fae and Aarasi.
Which expansions should I buy?
Between now and November 13th - Echoes of Faydwer all in one pack includes the original game, all expansions retail box rewards, and 30 days free gameplay with a new account.) You can ONLY get the "all in one pack" from either
November 13th and after - Rise of Kunark (new expansion and all in one pack. Will include original game, all expansions and 30 days of free gameplay with a new account.) You will be able to get the "all in one pack" including Kunark expansion both from Digital Download and a retail box at your local computer game retailer.
How's the PVP?

Is it too late to start or return?
NO! Everquest II is coming into it's own as the premier MMORPG on the market. It's player community is growing everyday and people are leaving WoW and Lord of the Rings all the time to play EQ2.
You have the following points of entry as a new player:
Original Starting Area
Since launch there have been 2 more starting areas to choose from and coming in November you will have a third new race and starting zone. That means existing players will be making new characters along with new players.
Do I have to solo, group or raid?
You can play how you like and still enjoy the game. Much of the content is geared for solo and group players with some good raid content as well. You CAN solo or group from 1 to level cap. And ALL classes can solo. Also the end game can be either group or raid content. You can truly play how you want!
Is this game good for casual players?
There is enough deep and engaging content to keep the most hardcore player busy for years in Everquest II. But yet each time you log in, even if just for one hour, you can always accomplish something.
Another example of how the game is accessible to casual players is the next live update going in. Persistent raid zone technology is letting players save their progress in an instanced raid to come back later and complete it.
