So many games being released are being overhyped by devs, overhyped interviews, overhyped videos of gameplay , hype hype hype and no one is releasing anything, like pirates of the burning sea how many years is it going to stay in development more then likely the games being released will be crap any way. Just release it and get it over with.

Unless you want every game to have a crapy launch like Vanguard then shut up and wait. games take ALOT of time to make. and Yes vanguard would of been a good game if it wasnt rushed to be release. Game wasnt done.
The guys making vanguard didn't even start making the game until a year before release, before that they just made demos to hornswaggle microsoft and soe (guess which one fell for it). And that game was actually playable on release, aside from being really buggy, but it was still more fun than WoW.

As I understand it, Hype means to make something bigger than it really is; aka promising more than it can deliver. Rusty, the leader of Flying Labs (developers of POTBS) has said several times that they are not trying to be the next "wow" game, and they even welcome other mmo's in the pirate genre, because they are secure about their niche product. That is of course only my interpretation of what they have said, but In my understanding they have been pretty moderate and careful about releasing too much information or hype.
The game does have some features im pretty sceptical about, though, like relying heavily on instancing (or so Im told), and the avatar combat is still not finished (looks robotic to me). I do confess, though, that PoTBS has caught my attention and I hope it manages to keep it. Thank God it's something other than Fantasy or sci-fi!

To some extent I do believe I can understand Melendu's frustration. I suppose it's the sign of the times however. Unlike 4 or 5 years ago when there weren't that many MMO's on the market, today it's dog eat dog and the companies basically try to get as much early enthusiasm stirred while they can.
However, I can agree with Melendu in that devs and those responsible for marketing games should back off the hype a tad. It seems to bring about too much in the way of expectation. The average forum reader gets a bit of a head start on the knowledge base of most new games. This forum has been an excellent example of that. It does take time to properly prepare today's MMO. In the future it will even take longer. Possibly it is up to us, the ones in the front lines, so to speak, to help in controlling over-enthusiasm and the hype machine that many expectant gamers buy into.
Next year we'll see a phenomenon unlike anything the gaming world has seen since the beginning of Windows. Count how many games will be released starting this October and running all the way to the end of Quarter 4, December, 2008! Much of this hype that has been heaped up on many of us will most likely flounder. Exactly how many games will actually turn a profit by the end of Q 4, 2008? Also watch the grand openings of these games. How many gamers will actually log onto and stay with the likes of AoC, Tabula Rasa, Warhammer, PotBS, and etc.
WoW and EQ 2 will have expansion packs out soon and it is my guess that these two tried and true games will plow right through much of the new game hype we see now and will continue to see in the coming year.
So much for youthful enthusiasm...

the marketing department is not part of the programming department. the hype costs nothing to the developement cycle.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
