Actually if I were you I would just purchase the original to start with.  A lot of the content from the expansion can only be seen once you have a character in the upper 50's.  Since you won't have that for at least a little while, you'll save yourself a little money and if you end up hating the game, you won't have spent any more money than what you need.  If you end up loving the game you can just go purchase the expansion then and you won't feel like you are being ripped off.

You probably won't even know what you are missing not buying the expansion to start with.  Don't forget that "new" stuff is added all the time via patches which have nothing to do with the expansion.  The expansion for the most part is only for those who've already experienced most of Azeroth already.  Since you've seen nothing, there's plenty for you to see before you need the expansion.  The ONLY reason I can think of to purchase the expansion from the get go would be if you just HAVE to play one of the new races that were added in the expansion, the Dranei or the Blood Elves.  Barring that, you won't be missing much to start off.

With every new expansion, the old content fades into the background. So yeah, just get the original WoW and play it to 60 and see how it goes from there. If you still love playing WoW after you reach 60 or you feel compelled to get the expansion(s) then, go ahead as it would be a whole new experience in outlands. Just try not to miss out the awesome old content since you'll probably never touch places like Molten Core and other high-end azeroth dungeons ever again.
