Someone Save ME!!!

Save me from the flood of free-to-play MMO's that seems to be coming out of the woodwork.

To me all these lack luster titles are doing nothing more than lowering the bar of what MMO's should be

Whats your opinion?

1: They don't have any effect on your other games whatsoever

2: Nobody is forcing you to play them, so what the hell do you need saving from?

Its fun when you got nothing to do and if you are bored at your main game. And when not, I dont care about them so its a win win situation.

And what made you think that its free to play MMO's that affect the quality? The standard is set by the most popular and most succesful MMORPG and in this case, thats World of Warcraft.

Something is doing it.. if not that.. then what?

The point of this post isnt to attack F2P mmos, its to discuss what folks think the reasons are for the lack luster releases as of late.

  • bleyzwunbleyzwun Member UncommonPosts: 1,087

The reason is because developers are scared to try something new, in fear of losing/wasting money.  It has nothing to do with F2P MMOs at all.  It's the same reason major labels put out shitty music.  If it works, they will put out as many similar artists as possible.  Nobody will try to do anything different until someone else does, and it proves to be popular.  Then everyone will jump on the bandwagon.

Ah but they do have great effect.

Other developers see the success and emulate it,  Instead of really taking their time and producing something worthwhile they take the shortcut and put another half assed game on the market.

unfortunately, as the poster above said. This model works. They won't stop making them until they stop making money off them . I'm talking about the cash shop games there.

As far as the low standard of quality throughout the industry, well..nevermind, yeah same thing. If it ain't broke , don't fix it, yada yada.

I have been playing mmorpg's since I first picked up eqoa (kinda everquest lite on ps2), moved on to eq, then wow. Also tried about 25 of theses free KGGMMO's  (korean grind game) As it stands, I am bored to death with the whole genre. I have been scouring the net looking for some promise of something innovative to come, and i don't see it. WAR, AOC, aion, ..all of the big titles that are upcoming just seem to be more of the same to me.  I was hoping tabula rasa was the answer, and as we speak it is installing, but judging from the reviews I've seen.. I doubt i'll fall in love.

For the love of god developers. Make a departure from the norm. Even if it's wierd , many of us will come. I have a strong notion that many many gamers are waiting for one of you to get really crazy.

Once a few mmorpgs proved that there's a real market (and hence $$$), it's natural that slews of titles will come out and try to cash in and get a piece of the pie. Were in the "glut" phase now, with clones coming out by the droves. Once all of the dust settles and the most of the crap titles die, hopefully we'll see some decent offerings. Until then, we must ride out the mire of trash and make sure we support with our consumer dollars only the titles worthy of existing.

Its funny to blame the F2P games for lowering the quality though to be honest. For the F2p market quality is even more important overall compared to the other markets. To a point mind you. That is due mainly to the fact that F2p games make there money off of giving you a game you enjoy then convincing you to spend money on your characters in it. If people do not like there games they make no cash. Where as a normal retail game or payed MMO will sucker you into paying and if a couple of months down the road you find you do not like the game what do they care? The numbers drop low enough they just pull it ( Think Earth and Beyond for example) And move on.

Long story short the quality has nothing to do with F2p. Its only the normal market forces at work so as long as they keep making money on the same quality they will keep pumping out that quality.
