There is no doubt that micro transaction games are profitable and successful, because they are an extension of RMT and RMT is big business. A lot of gamers support RMT and take shortcuts because they have no integrity, nothing new. This is why those of us who refuse to play games that support RMT and micro transactions, have to voice our displeasure often, to try and ensure that at least some games are designed and released for us to play. Those of us who are against this bastardization of MMOGs make up a significant market share and should not be ignored.
Silkroad is an extremely popular game that uses this method. The game has 23 servers ,thats alot and on peak times it is a very busy game. This game is for the most part asian, however there is still alot of others playing it.This method of playing is of course rampant in free to play games,as this is there alternative to making money. It is a great idea on the surface because it allows people with little money to have a little bit of fun.
The problem however is on the inside of the game. They make these games to favour the players that pay and i mean alot of favourtism. Now the only real problem this causes is in a PVP game. All of the games integrity is lost bigtime when you factor in players using RL money to dominate others that don't,in the PVP battlefield.Silkroad does a decent job of not ruining the game too much by not allowing all out PK's.It is possible to PK at anytime, however you will suffer a penalty, how severe it is i do not know.Basically the game is about having a little fun to pass the time away and you don't have to pay a cent, wich means the idea does have a good side to it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Indeed, because it does show that on average this forum does not represent the mmo genre in the slightest. another reason is because of the fact that in the last poll around 90% would not want to play an item shop MMO, while the item shop MMO players percentage is MUCH, MUCH larger than 90%.
So how many MMO players are there in the world? Hundreds of millions according to this but I dunno

Nah, I made a small mistake in that post. that 90% I mentioned at the end of the post should be 10%.
www.youtube.com/watch There are many uninformed people who claim that there are no succesful micro transaction MMORPG's. Ofcourse this is completely incorrect, many "item shop" games are doing quite well. This Fox report is about Maple Story, and it shows how the business model works and how (mostly kids) get hooked and pay a lot of money for those items. Hearing the numbers of what some people pay for a game like this, its not surprising to see so many MMO's using this alternative payment model.
So you think get kids hooked on ingame stores buying expensive items is a succes bah:(

Well I have to disagree about the item stores not playing a factor. Most of these games almost require item store items as they offer useful buffs etc that are almost necessary once you get higher in level. I have played and stopped playing several of the free games that do exactly that. That is why I don't think this model will work. People get disenchanted fast when other advance much faster because they can spend more.
Nice you can quote non existant games that SOE publishes, once they are playable and successful then you can use them as examples, until then they are vaporware.
We will just have to see, but until I see a major MMO use such and be successful, your arguments are all hot air.
micro transactions wont get big in the west any time soon. SOE IS NOT one of the biggest game companys out there. NCSoft, Blizzard, and so many more companies have more succesful games then SOE's EQ2. Also with SOE's reputation it really isnt helping the whole micro-transaction business model, considering SOE has tried to swindle players since EQ and the froglok fiasco. I dont see this business plan going anywhere anytime soon, until a larger, better, and more succesful game has it.

Item mall games might be successful. They'll never be fun though.
I could care less what success they have. I will not participate.
