If they follow the model than COX follows, which Mr. Walton's clear acquaintance with should mean he sees and perhaps enjoys, then I wouldn't worry at all. If you're not familiar with it, your characters go on a 90-day hold when your account expires. After those 90 days, someone can claim your name. Let's say you get the name Biggles, and after 90 days someone else decides to try to take it...they will get the name. If you reup your account and try to connect with the character it will indicate that your character name is taken and you are provided a renaming token and must use it. I don't mind this system...it seems perfect fair to me...my character is still there, with all my hard-earned stats...I just need to give it a new name. That was Mr. Walton's concern in his comments...namespace. He wants to be sure that Aragorn is available to the general populace. Fair enough. But if he actually deletes my characters after some period from when I cancel my account I'll personally write him a very nasty letter.
Some of the other threads have said that he meant deleting the names and not the characters, but I wouldn't mind seeing a quote from him somewhere that clearly states that is what he meant to say.
He was saying that it would be better for people if they deleted their characters if they stopped playing them.
He also said he wanted to make the grind for max level less obvious, meaning you wouldnt worry much about your characters... Meaning their "MMORPG" is going to suck.
All respect to BioWare, but it seems like they will make a casual game, where the only thing that makes it a MMORPG is the fact they have "levels" and a sort of "character customization".
Im imagining a online NWN universe, in a persisten world, with only 20 levels etc...

Heh, when read the initial post this system is what I envisioned would solve the "nameplace" problem.
No idea CoHX had this in place and I too think it is a perfectly fair and intelligent system.
Personally I would never return to a game that removed my characters, I do not mind starting from scratch but I still want access to my old characters.
I agree with Walton on one point though, trying to come up with a name that is "free" can be extremely annoying.
For example my latest Alt in Lotro is named "Nomorenames", I just gave up trying to come up with something snazzy that wasnt taken.
I am amazed that one was free even.

We just need to numbers and sign-characters in names again, like in asian games.
I doubt its true that games will delete names. As much as people may want one particular name and its not available, they will either go to another server where its available or just slug out a new name no change from the companies point of view, they have thier customer still. Deleting a char entirely (including the name) prevents the company from attracting that customet back thus a loss of money...no, companies will keep name and char files for as long as they are able.
I wouldn't play a game if it deletes your character after a period of time, unless it's a free game(like Diablo II). That makes me feel forced to play.
There is one game where you got deleted when you die: it is usually called life. And yet still, some will try to convince you that ONE day someone called Jesusorsomething will come back to your sorry old remains and will re-suscribe it. I love this world.
CoH doesn't delete any character names after 90 days, only the characters that are below level 6 or 10 (don't remember exactly). The character that you invested hours and hours into will maintain the same name after you return, just the ones below a certain level will have their names released for others to grab.
CoH also has a nice name check for the server you selected before you even create your char to make sure if it's available.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Square makes it next to impossible to recover a character in any of thier videos. Just recently in Fantasy Earth (a part of pol) the enacted a new system of questions. God help you if your kid who doesnt write all the codes and questions down. But Square's gamers seem to love to be kicked in the balls.
Of the 300k active users of FF XI , around 80% are recycled players , in my linkshell alone , 30 to 40% of the people have lost content IDs or box codes so they cant retrieve thier passwords.
I personally dont like games saving names but data is another. In Lineage 1 just recently , in Korea and Asian area they purged over 1 billion names from over 400k accounts they deemed inactive , to save your name you had to log in within 30 days of the announce. Lineage 2 , did something akin to that.
There is nothing more annoying than the guy who makes Trial characters then those names get locked. During the first month of Lineage 2 I remember over 100 people I knew make chars just to lock names only to quit the game a month later.

MUST KILL ALL NUMBER AND SYMBOL CHARACTERS.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

It is only a good idea when they set a limit (ie in Diablo 2 your character would be deleted after not logging in for like 90 days).
