If you want [socializing/fun/casual gameplay/good PvE] go for LOTRO
If you just want a fast paced pvp thingy, go for GW.
NOTE: LOTRO DOES HAVE PVP, and its pretty interesting. Its called PvMP (Player versus Monster Player) you can get a monster player at level 10, the MP is already at 50 and the players fight the monster players) no such rewards, but its definately long lasting an fun, its an ongoing battle - unlike guildwars. Get in, win/lose, get out.
Played almost everything... Currently playing nothing... Waiting for: Darkfall, WAR, Guild Wars 2.
Yes LOTRO and GW are very different games but i completely DISAGREE with freakomar when he says "If you just want a fast paced pvp thingy, go for GW".
I've been playing GW since 2005 for a total of more than 700 hours and I almost never was involved in PVP since i'm not a pvper and generally stay away from it.
On the contrary i think it's the PVE side that makes GW shine.
Because of it's private instance system GW probably has the richest and most varied quest/mission system out there. The PVE system is also storyline based which adds a purpose to most quests/missions.
Yet, on the rare occasion i did some PVP i found it surprisingly enjoyable.
I think it's hard to give a definitive answer to the Lotro vs GW question. I enjoyed LOTRO trial but not enough to want to continue. Yet it is a great game.
On the other hand, i think GW is one of the greatest online game i've ever played (with EvE Online).
I think it's a matter of personal taste. Try both games if you can

Yeah, I respect your opinion - but guildwars is meant to be a PvP game though true, the PvE kicks ass

Runs well with a good system...lots to do, great crafting, meaningful quests, housing, rewards system...and now a built in Trading Card game.,.
LOTRO is quite boring, runs badly on new hardware (I have an 8800GTS 640, 4 gigs of ram and an E6600 Dual core...and all I got were massive stalls, hitching, etc..)
I just started EQ2 after leaving the buggy LOTRO, and I tell you what...this game has so many other games out there beat with all of it's features...
Enjoy the new system, and play something worthwhile to show off your systems power..
Cheers!
(PS: Guild Wars is an AWESOME game though...it just does not push your system ...so for sheer power and beauty, EQ2, Guild Wars for PvP and a very good PvE campaign that actually has an end of story)
Every game is pretty much the same thing when you get rid of all the fluff. Find one with the lore you like and the community you like is about all you can do at this point. I can send you a referral for lotr..just pm me w/ an e-mail address or theres a 7 day trial for it i think.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
I'd say go with EQ2 as well. However if it has to be either of those two, simply download the free trial of LotRO if you don't like it go with Guild Wars. Not sure why you HAVE to play either of those two though.

I say give them all a try, but ignore the above poster's comments. They're obviously here to troll LOTRO and push EQ2. Try each one and see which one you like.
EQ2 is an older game... lower levels will be harder to find people to group with. LOTRO still has many people in many levels.
If LOTRO is that buggy to the above poster, there's no way they can play EQ2 at a decent setting.

Yes totally ignore people who say LOTRO runs worse then EQ2, that's not possible. I run it on a 6800 nvidia GS on high (not ultra high..) and have no lag whatsoever in all areas except for busy places like Bree (a town) but even that is pretty minor.
EQ2 is heavy on graphic memory and has in game memory leaks, I know a lot of them have been fixed, but I still had issues with them in july.
I'd recommend GW if you want a quick multiplayer type game with a nice story, great for casual gamers and awesome for PvP. But if you are into things like crafting, housing, swimming and all that extra stuff some of us love, I'd suggest LOTRO. It's still pretty casual but is an actually MMO where you are part of an almost seamless world that is bound to get a lot bigger.

Incorrect sir. This is not the case...Don't get me wrong...EQ2 IS better...but, they also have had 3 years to work out their issues and it shows. I also am NEW to EQ2, and have had zero issues finding groups...and they have a great community...also they have an excellent solo game if groups are hard to find.
Turbine came to LOTRO with an old engine, and it does not run well for a lot of people (but not everyone has an issue, or is just blind to the problems)...but no need to take my word...go ahead, take the trial, and then check the forums at Turbine...tech support is lacking, various issues based on OS...sorry..I know the truth hurts...but I just here to state what anyone else can see.
Really, if the person wishes to pick Guild Wars over LOTRO...that also would be a great choice...not here to push EQ2, just want to make sure the OP knows the score...

This post I actually agree with...LOTRO does run WAY better on a 6800 model video card than an 8800 GTS...it has been proven many times over...this could be Nvidia's fault or Turbines...the fact is no one is also willing to take blame for it.
I also would not try to run EQ2 on 6x series card, but on my 8x series...it runs flawlessly.
I also have had great luck running the closed beta for Tabula Rasa...that seems to be a cool upcoming game...if you like sci-fi MMO's...but content is sorely lacking...but, if you have high end hardware it runs great.
And as to GW...pick any system and it runs like a dream...this game truly shines of all the titles we have discussed. And with GW2 coming down the pipe, that game may be the ultimate winner for MMO's...the various discussions on what type of content will exist and the fact it will also be free after initial purchase...thats a major score in my book!
Anyways...I think people think i am here to push some game like EQ2 or whatever...not the case...instead I am here to warn you of the issues with LOTRO...like poor tech support and certain hardware causing issues based on proven documentation from the Devs (Bunsen), and content still lacking (not enough raid content for high end players, standard quest formats and hard to find groups for various forced group quests)...
So...again...try the demo's...you will get the best opinion that way...
It's not to say that the turbine engine is old.. the engine is something always being worked on. Just like that of the unreal engine. Personally, I have never had any performance issues on a machines thats below the specs of what the guy above posted. I will agree that EQ2 does personally run better now on todays hardware but let's be realistic.. you don't have to run very far before you hit a load screen.. then a load screen.. then a load screen. As zoned as that game is it should run smoother than it does.
Is the Turbine Engine the perfect example of an engine? The simplest answer is no. But the engine does work, it looks fine, and the developers know it pretty well. The one thing that Turbine has always seemed to have a problem with in their engine was when a small area became quite populated all of a sudden. Back in Asherons Call days they would warn of a portal storm and some people would be teleported to an area close by the populated one. Not a great design choice but for the late 90s that game was pulling of things the EQ2 engine still can't do now.
They've also made improvements and upgrades to their engine over the years. They recently patched DDO's version of the engine with a handful of items from the newer LOTRO version.
I find it pathetically ironic when people whine about Turbine's "old engine" yet they have no problem with everyone licensing various versions of Epic's Unreal Engine. Turbine just doesn't give a version number for their engine and they don't license it.
I have bought the first 3 sets for GW, and now wish I had stopped at the first one. I get bored again after a few days back IG. But, it was fun for the first couple of months. Only been playing LotRO for about a week, am enjoying it, but I'm still too new there to recommend spending money on it yet. Try the trial though.
Seems like it's one of those grass is greener on the other side things.
I enjoyed GW, EQ2, and my wife enjoyed her experience with LotR.
Each has high points and low points. Each has depth in their own ways. It'll be hard to depend on what others will say since it's a personal preference. Performance wise, it'll be even harder to decide since we don't know what might've caused so and so to have problems in the first place on that particular game. Maybe its an os thing, maybe it's spyware, or maybe the game didn't like their graphics card. Each of those previous mentioned games ran fine on 4 different systems I built, some with a little tweaking. I've heard others have different experiences, so performance isn't something to base it off of unless it's so common that it's obvious.
I'd suggest like others have said, try the trials. Experience is the best education in this area.
Well i would not advice starting EQ2 now , it had a lot of problems when it was released, and did not even preform half as good as Lotro now at lanch, but nowday i asume it has become stable whit todays hardware but its still SOE, and nowdays EQ2 is getting very old and not worth starting it anymore in my opinion, also lotro is a good game but not realy inovative but its fresh and will still get a lot of content updated in the years to come.

I think I would say your incredibly wrong on this point. I think this is just the usual SOE hate, and not the facts. The game has had 3 expansions, several addon packs, major updates...and a NEW expansion is coming in November..
As well, they are redoing the skeleton engine for the models, they have added in a Trading Card Game that is free for players...except for purchasing cards et al : Magic TG Online or Pox Nora...they are updating the engine more to streamline performance..
This game is far from dead...
Again...make your own decisions. I came in new to EQ2, and I couldn't be happier right now...it is the game I have always wanted through my Guild Wars, WoW days...
Good luck no matter what you choose...try each demo, and THEN make a choice..

Then again, seeing as how the OP specifically asked for opinions between Guild Wars and Lord of The Rings online, it's completely irrelevant to come back promoting EQ2. It's completely off-topic.
In answer to the OP... I think it's been summed up pretty well.
If you're looking for a more PvE-focused experience, with a twist on PvP implemented PvMP), with alot of lore and years of growth yet to come, check out LoTRO.
If you're looking for a game that is primarily PvP-centric but has a PvE portion as well, you could give Guild Wars a try.
You're likely to spend alot more money on GW now, if you want all versions of it, as there are currently 3 on the market, with a 4th coming out. LoTRO just came out 4 months or so ago, so it's only the main game you're buying; no expansions yet.

Uh...again...not a promotion...just comments to sandage's incorrect comments. I assume it is not ok for him to make incorrect comments in the LOTRO thread about EQ2 either...right? We had finally veered off the "promote EQ2" path, but I figured I better correct sandages remarks...as they are totally wrong...
Personally I say go with Guild Wars...pay once, never pay again...pretty good deal..and avoid the heartaches and issues of LOTRO or EQ2 as well actually...

Both are solid games. You can't go wrong with either. However, without knowing more about your tastes there is little reason for us to think your should prefer one over another. EQ II, as the posters that derailed this thread have pointed out, is also very solid. As many others have stated, I would go for the trials. You can get a DVD with a free 14 day GW trial (it includes the first 2 expansions!) at Electroics Botique/ Funcoland/ Gamestop. EQ II and LoTRO have free dowloads. GW has a download as well, but you have to go through a network that's a pain in the butt to get to it (unless things have changed since the last time I looked into it).
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

No Offence but non of my comments are Totally wrong, It did have loads of problems at lanch and EQ2 is getting old, not death...I never said it was a bad game, its a realy great game i just dont like fanboys like yourself that try to spin the reality , saying that things i say are Totally wrong and cant stand any negative comments about there game, wich is clearly in this case.

Your right...you did get one opinion correct...when you said it is SOE...whatever that meant...I assume an SOE slam...
EQ2 is old..yet, it feels more fresh than LOTRO...which is a hashed over WoW in my opinion...with a junky UI, hitching performance
I assume EQ2 had problems when it started...but like WoW, has had years to mature...yet your statement makes it look like nothing is wrong with LOTRO..The game is still extremely buggy, and quests are broken...but again, everyone is jaded by the setting, and have pulled the blankets over the eyes so they will not see this or that problem. It's MIDDLE EARTH...big deal...I love ME...but it will not make me like the game any better as it performs horribly!
My points are just don't choose LOTRO as it is a mess right now...EQ2? Sure...try it, GW...sure ...try it...Tabula Rasa...new...try it...ahhh, heck...even go back to WoW!
But, the SOE, EQ2 hate is just annoying..just like my LOTRO hate is annoying (not Turbine hate though...as DDO is even decent for what it is...)
Ignore both of these...go with EQ2 Runs well with a good system...lots to do, great crafting, meaningful quests, housing, rewards system...and now a built in Trading Card game.,.
Although I agree with your assessment that EQ2 is a fun game, it is still a performance dog.
It still doesn't run well on SLI.
It still ignores one processor of a dual core.
I lso disagree with your depiction of LOTRO. I have basically the same system as you do. (E6400 rather than 6600 and 3 gb memory) It runs like a dream on my system. Also, it runs like a dream on my 1.8 ghz 1gb ram Centrino laptop. Also, it runs on an old Pentium D that I brought up for my son.
If we are talking performance, EQ2 is beat hands down. Both EQ2 and LOTRO are fun to play.
One last thing, there are rumors that EQ2 performance might improve after kunark, so you might just want to wait for the expansion. Kunark was my favorite expansion in the original game so I am deffienately interested.

Played almost everything...

Ignore both of these...go with EQ2
Pretty much every game has free trials. Use em.

(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
Do some reading on it, you know..research...instead of asking other people what THEY would pick. Are you getting the game for them?

Cheers
Cheers!
Both are good games.

Cheers!

Cheers!

Cheers!
