I will definately play this game and I beliew I'll enjoy it too but...  but why not skill based or limited skill based like the old SWG where you were able to choose few paths and combine them a unique character. There is also restrictions with race/class that I find hard to understand like no soldiers in Stygia or druid of the Storm in Cimmeria.

Maybe Stygians should have better bonuses being able to access unholy libraries in Khemi in general but a cimmerian wanderer if living in Stygia for a while should be able to access that information too.... after few bribes etc. And vica versa why not a stygian would be able to master soldiers profession if joined a cimmerian tribe and lived with them for sometime.

The game says to be after enchanced realism. Love it! So why these over simpliphied class restrictions sometimes even against the lore? Realism would  be able go everywhere and try anything and then become superiour(skilled) in what you train most...

Oh well I will play it but why why gate our way in Hyboria

    My first question is this:

If this is a serious concern of yours, why would you ask it here where you can only get feedback from users here, why would you choose to not post it on the official forums where your questions may get answered by a Dev?

I totally agree with you OP. I think alot of balances by race was done after the classes got cut down, and they went for what seemed most reasonable. I still think there is a case for a Druid of the Storm to be Cimmerian! But I prefer the level system over a skill based one, although AoC has a shit load of feats! I like to feel rewarded for the advancements I make in game personally.

I've always been a fan of allowing any race for any profession; if that race isn't naturally inclined towards that profession (ie - stygian soldiers), you'll suffer the consequences or unique characteristics of such a choice.

I've always liked the "Applied Skills" system like old UO.   Theres still plenty of ways to tie in feats to a skill system. Skills seem more like real life.  NOT REALISTIC, but more how people learn, they progressively get better little by little.  I don't remember becomeing Level 80 Securities Trader.   I also don't remember seeing "Level 80 Plumber" in the phone book.  Plenty of Master Plumbers tho!!! (UO REFERENCE)

They still have leveling, in the form of grinding to raise your skills.

hey that's a good idea. check out my Blog posting on Character Advancement!

that's pretty much what I proposed.

a skill based system with a Focus Web (like ffx grid) with "levels" only giving you the points to put on the grid.

more "fixed" stats and health/mana like in old UO

I agree OP.  I can answer that fairly easily.  Level based MMOs equal = young players = $(parent's $).  Skill based games attract older players who pay for MMOs themselves, but in doing so they have to work and sometimes get too busy with RL and have to unsubscribe which is bad for the game.  Level bases like WoW will continue to be the trend because there is more $ involved because of the kid factor.  Hey, I wish it wasn't true, but typically the only ones that will dispute it are kids themselves.
