Are games overrated because of their graphics?

Well some games like Runescape, I would say looks pretty bad and isn't a good game in my opinion. However the gameplay is somewhat better than some higher rated games with better graphics such as Lastchoas. Maybe Rappelz, I know Rappelz is a pretty good game, but think about it. All the games with good graphics are baiscally point and click combat, and also the game SOTNW may look pretty but you hardly need to play it it plays itself, while Runescape is basically the same thing, but there are many skills to train and the quests are unique at least. Also for example take Lunia. Alot of people just look at the screenshots and saw "screw this" But alot of people complain about the boring points of MMOs: point and click, grind, repitition. Lunia offers a break from that and some people still fail to see it. I know some people may disagree but do you think MMOs are overrated just by their graphics? Sorry if I had offended someone by posting this.

Finnaly someone who understands. I played Runescape for two year before i finnaly decided i needed to move on. Alot of people in are modern world base what games they should bother downloading just off of pretty glow effects and and shiney mounts. Most of them dont really understand that alot of the game that dont have those great graphics can aculley be much more enjoyable(runescape/Tale in the desert/UO(nvr played but they say its good)). But (IMO) most people need to learn what makes a good mmo then what makes just a good looking mmo.

I think developers are overly enthusiastic about graphics, "seamless" worlds, and other features that rank low in importance for players.  Players (payers) want to have "fun," and beautiful graphics can help with immersion (EQ 2).  But graphics that are cutting edge cannot make a bad game a good one (Vanguard, LotR).

Graphics are important, but they are not as important to gamers as they are to developers.  Environmental effects, audio, and other features can enhance immersion to a greater degree than high graphical demands.

There are ugly good games and pretty bad games. Having played "ugly" games which I enjoyed and "pretty" games which I hated, I don't judge games solely based on their graphics. Graphics are just part of the equation. I don't rate graphics high on my scale, but it certainly does affect my decision on if I like a game. It does not affect whether I will play the game though. If I hear a game is amazing and looks like an atari game I'll still check it out. If a game looks amazingly beautiful, but every review and everyone I talk to says it's the worst game ever made I won't check it out. Obviously though there are people that see a screenshot and simply say "pass" not even bothering to give it a shot or even reading about the game!

I beleive that graphics do factor in, but when all comes to all it's all about fun. Look at World Of Warcraft. With 9 million subscribers and counting, this is easily the most popular MMO (controls ~55% of the MMORPG market). Yet, the graphics of WoW are mediocre at best compared to other games of its time and beyond. Yet, the addictive qualities, quests, killing, instances, (and whatever else it is) are the best and most important features of the game. Once you get lost in the whole world and storyline, you seem to forget what you are looking at and just see it as real life. Others games that I have played such as EVE, CoH/CoV, Guild Wars, 9Dragons and others have better graphics, yet as hard as it is for me to admit, they just aren't as fun as WoW. So in conclusion I agree with you 100%, and so should 9 million subscribers of World of Warcraft.

I don't actually agree that the graphics in Wow are bad.  (I don't like them much for the record).

The graphics in Wow are actually very well done, that is they are inherently consistant, have their own style that rings true with several mythical and even historical sentiments that folks hold from prior to the game's existance.  They are functionally complete (lots of variety, affected by lighting, even interesting in design (armor and weapons sometims give the 'woah!' effect).

Wow graphics are immeasurably better then most of the games cited above my post.

I understand that many folks (like me) would prefer a different style and/or a different level of realism and polygon count, but they are not 'bad' by any means, that is they shouldn't really be measured (IMO) by how good or bad they are, but rather how likable they are.  They are firmly in the good category even if unliked by many.

Graphics are very important to me.  Not most.  That's kind of obvious.  Do they boost game scores?  They do mine.  And they do MMORPGs.
