Can anyone tell me why this is a MMO? The only thing I get from other players is lag, honestly. There is no pvp and no real reason to group. I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just curious whether or not other players are necessary at some point in the game.

With the way you talk I would hope that you have played through the game or at least gotten very far, correct?
Subscriptions will make them more money.
And there isn't enough substance to even be a single player game. It's not an FPS, and as a single-player RPG it would get all 2/10, and 3/10 scores on review sites...
And I have gotten to level 38 and been in the game since first phase of closed beta. To answer your question, no, the game makes you feel unimportant. You run around and shoot monsters, do some fedex quests, and then kill more monsters. One of the most uninspiring and unrewarding titles currently.
Not only that, but you don't truly feel like you're any better than an 8 yr old playing the same game. Someone who aims is pretty much the same as someone who just tab-kills.
I played into the upper 20's and a lot of my final levels were hoping I would finally move into some type of pvp area. Eventually I just became bored and began to wonder why there was a need for other players. I really enjoyed the game at first and even later some of the bigger missions are a lot of fun. The only problem is, I never really had to group and never saw more than 2 people that seemed to be operating together.
I realize its a beta (at least about a month ago when I played) and hope things change. Some aspects of the game are well done. I was just wondering what other players' experiences were as far as multiplayer game play. As far as I could see, there was none.
And I agree with the post above, there is a lot of opportunity for TR to be diverse, weapons, logos, etc but it is not taken advantage of. Most everyone runs around with a shotgun and lightning. I tried some of the other weapons and, while they are fun to shoot, are simply not as effective overall as the above technique. Its too easy to just run up and blow something away, especially after you train weapons to 5 and get a knockback almost every shot.
I think it is a good mmorpg but it could also be a good single player game. I think thats a strong point there are many mmorpgs that would fall flat on their faces as a single player game....
You can solo but you can also group. I've played a couple people and it is kinda chaotic but still fun. I can chat with people and ask for help or just bs with the community. I can join a guild and be part of a larger group. And pretty soon there will be an auction house where you can trade items.
So I think TR has strengths of both types of games and I think that is fantastic.
PvP arenas, or clan conflicts would be nice. Individual PvP is already there where you can challenge people. FFA PvP would be bad and I'd cancel instantly.

This game is very very cool. They just beefed up the mobs too. As far as PvP, I like the idea of controlled arenas and CLan wars.
Those Arenas in City of Heroes sure worked out well.
Heck they worked out so well that they are, always, utterly empty of players !
And the PvP zones are almost completely empty too.
If Tabula Rasa didn't have a back story that precludes human vs human pvp on a large scale it might be fun.
To me, it's utterly immersion breaking imaging smacktards running zone to zone trying to find other smacktards wanting PvP duels, especially since the zones will be instanced.
I can also imagine those same smacktards duel invite spamming because they are bored and cannot find anyone to duel with, so I have to either add them to my limited ignore list or put up with their duel request popping up over and over.
I will venture that griefplay will be a factor in this game as soon as the paid player base starts getting bored.
It is a singleplayer game.
The only ones who didn't notice were the ones who made it.
Oooo! Snap! Hehe.
Griefing is already a factor in the game.
I started complaining about it as soon as they nerfed the game mechanic controlling who got the xp/kill cred/drop, told them it was an incredibly poor choice given that the mission line is very linear and that they could expect people to camp the quest bosses and grief anyone coming along who actually needed to kill the boss to get the drop to complete the mission and continue deeper into the game.
Did they listen? sort of. They replaced the mechanic that gave everything to the one person doing the most physical damage, with one granting a varying amount of xp/cred/drop to the top 3 physical damage dealers. Still a poor choice as it still allows grifing and kill-stealing to happen.
They would be better off going back to the previous mechanic that gave full and equal xp/creed/drops to everyone doing any damage at all. Why won't they? because they don't want people hitting level cap too quickly and finding out that there is nothing more for them to do other than re-roll and start from scratch. They'd be better off working on the tragic shallowness of the game, allowing for a full and free respec of characters, sorting out the amazingly crap crafting system, and taking steps to ensure that we all feel like we are on the same side of the conflict. But instead of it being 'Us v Bane', it's 'Me v World'. Only difference between the Bane, PC's, and NPC's, is that I can get some satisfaction popping a cap in a Bane's ass, something I can't do to the bastard who'd just killed my quest boss *again*
groundbreaking and innovative my puckered hoop
It's an MMO because we are a part of an army. This game relies heavily on its storyline. If someone comes in to the game just wanting to level and be the top PvPer, this game is definitely not for you.
I do agree that I feel a loss of connection between players. I find it hard to distinguish an NPC between a real player. However, I have suggested to NCsoft to enable the "character name + title" over the players' head as a default setting. This way, hopefully more interaction will open up.

The reason its nt a single player game is because noone would play it in its current form.

You must be playing a different game than I am, I find the storyline to be of marginal importance at best. There is nothing stopping you from grinding your way to level cap without doing a single mission beyond bootcamp.
We aren't part of an army, we are part of a rag-tag militia that is fighting amongst itself for kills/xp/drops far more than we are actually fighting the Bane
Face it, if you are looking for something groundbreaking, innovative, and next gen, this isn't the game for you. it is shallow, unfinished, and not ready for primetime. No matter how much smoke people blow up your butt.
