Right now I think it is jsut as strong as it ever was with ToA being the main area to compete in. There is a new frontiers that will be emplemented in about 1 week and there is a lot of hype about that. Should be great. With this new frontiers, it should help and reinforce ToA.

Damn I gave my old disc to one of my friend. He never gave me back.
DAoC is still going strong and the developers appear to be committed to keeping the content up to date. In fact, I'd say it is the best of the "old school" MMORPGs at the moment. The Merlin server still has a huge population and even the lesser populated servers such as Nimue (my current shard) still peak at over 1200.
ToA is the current area of greatest activity. Almost every night there are master level raids which are a blast (if run properly). The Frontiers expansion that mrcarper mentioned is in beta on the Pendragon server. The only criticism I have been hearing is of the lag on Pend during beta peaks.
However, the population does appear to have flattened out. Some have argued that the majority of new accounts are merely bot accounts and that actual new blood is becoming scarce. That is a fair assessment in my estimation. I think DAoC will weather the upcoming storms of WoW and EQ2, but those games (and others) will certainly lure away a number of those who aren't die-hard DAoCers.
