My 60 year old neighbor came over from across the street in my Detroit neighborhood to warn me of an impending attack and that we needed to do something to ensure our safety...  or something to that effect.  She looked terrified.  I imagined that in this old woman's mind Russian paratroopers could drop from the sky at any moment and things around the neighborhood would start randomly exploding.  I had to try hard to keep from laughing during that beat where I imagined what was going on in that old Cold War indocrinated noggin of hers.

I was at a friends house. We where playing some games. He left the room to help his father with something, dinner I think. A couple minutes later he returned, saying a plane had crashed into the WTC. "Oh, probably a Cessna or so" I thought. You know Pilot and passenger dead, couple of people in the building hurt and a small fire. So I kept playing, my friend however, did return to the tv instantly. Kinda odd I thought. And a couple of minutes later, when I was done, and we where called to eat I saw what had happened. They where still showing the first plane hitting the tower. While we where eating the second plane hit the towers.

I think I was at home as well. I think my mom yelled to me from downstairs, informing me what happened.

I was playing Red Alert 2, when my brother came in the room and told me they had attacked the Pentagon and WTC...strange coincidence that I would be playing the mission with Russians where you were supposed to destroy the Pentagon. I though it was a joke though, so I kept playing.

I found out later that it wasn't a joke...

I was in an old east block student accomodation unit in Dresden Germany finishing up some work with radioactive metals for my PhD. my girlfriend (now wife) had only arived from America a couple of days earlier, she was meeting up with me after going to Burning Man. I was in Dresden with a  another Austraian PhD student, she arrived at our apartment with the news that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I can remember clearly thinking "crap, that changes the political landscape of the planet and not in a way i will like".

we all went around to a local students flat (they had a TV i didn't)  and watched it unfold furthur, including the fire, people jumping out and the collapse.

The government wants the memory alive and well, keep reminding it's citizens of the "War on Terror', good control mechanism.

Terrible tragedy though, lot of innocents died.

I was sitting in my cube working on an Activity Based Costing model in Access when a co-worker called and told me to come into the break room quickly. Just as I entered the second plane was crashing into the second tower. I work in Washington DC, near the Potomac River. As we watched in horror, the report came in that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. We all literally turned our heads, looked out the window, and saw the smoke from the Pentagon in the distance. Totally surreal. We were let out early and my drive home goes directly past the Pentagon on route 395. As I approached the Pentagon, there were police in the middle of the highway stopping traffic so that Pentagon employees could cross. Outherwise, my drive home was fairly simple, but the traffic coming into DC was, of course, stopped and backed up for many miles. I'll blog about that day and it's continuing aftermath sometime in the future, but that's where I was when the catastrophy began.

That day was one disaster after the next for me. I had just learned my mom was leaving my dad for another guy. She was leaving the day the attacks occured so I didnt sleep a wink that night. When she came into my bedroom I thought she was coming in to say goodbye. Shockingly she told me america was under attack, repeating what she had heard on tv. I was amazed to realize the scope of the attacks when I first saw the tape of the first jet hit. My mom had been in the middle of packing to go when it first happened. In anycase the day went by. I saw the second jet hit as I sat and ate my breakfast and basically stayed glued to the tv the whole day.

Now everytime 9/11 comes by I remember the anniversary of many things. ALl painful. All which I recovered from.

I was in freshman Western Civ, and deep down I was happy that we got to watch the tube instead of learn about Hannibal. I'm a terrible person.

I woke up a little early and decided to turn on the TV while I got ready.  The channel was already turned to CNN and I'm on the west coast so I had unfortunate timing to see the second tower being hit live.

Just not worth my time anymore.

I was getting my coffee, I had just arrived to work.  My cousin remembers well, he was in the Twin Towers.  He made it out.

I was living in CT the morning when it happened. I was getting ready for work and turned on the TV to catch the news. They had a report of a plane crashing into one of the world trade center buldings and they had pictures of smoke coming out of the first tower.

They where going over the possibilities, and at first they where mostly worried that somone had accidentally crashed into the tower. I don't think they even knew what kind of plane it was. As they where discussing, and I will never forget this, you saw the second plane going into the bulding. My jaw dropped. You knew then that that it wasn't an accident. One of the reporters was like "Oh my God". it was so surreal, didn't really think it was happening.

I shut off the TV eventually and went to work, almost no one was there and the people that where didn't say much. After a while our boss let us go home early. When I got back home I started watching the news again and all the things that happened after the attack, I stopped watching TV for a while after that.

I had a class scheduled in Manhattan about a block south of the church near ground zero. It was a week or so after 9/11. I grew up near Manhattan and it was really wierd to go there and not hear the usual noise in downtown. It also smelled like dust and almost like rotten chicken, which I guess was from the bodies. They had all the subways past 14th street shut down if I remember right so I had to walk a few blocks. I looked to the west and saw collapsed building and what looked like the roof of one of the buildings on its side in the middle of the street. There was a layer of white dust everywhere, a lot of people had there mouths covered. Some businesses where starting to reopen.

I was in my car listening to the radio before class when I heard what was happening.  It was really scary because at the time my sister worked for the department of defense and worked in the pentegon anywhere from 1-3 days a week.  Fortunately she wasn't there that day.  A co-worker of her's wife died in the attack though.  The really sad part was their daughter was so young that she didn't understand what happened, and when she saw my sister days later she thought it was he mom at first because they has similar features.
