Roleplay, will it exist?

pahyapahya Member CommonPosts: 19

I'm avid roleplayer very excited by the setting of TR, chances are that I will play regardless and roleplay with my close friends regardless but I'm curious, will there be an RP community? Is there one already that I have missed thus far? An RP server, official or un-official?

Sci-fi MMOs are so painfully rare, I'm certainly looking forward to stepping out of fantasy for a time.

They have made some bad choices for roleplaying - built-in voicechat and it's not as easy to move and chat as in most other MMOs. It doesn't seem they put much effort into designing interesting social interactions, the game appear a bit shallow.

But will roleplay exist? Yeah probably, to some degree.

how is built in voice chat bad for role play? You aren't forced to use voice chat.

Maybe someone could explain what they feel they need in a game in order to role-play?

From my point of few - I would be role-playing being a mercenary - not a AFS soldier. why? Well we have to buy ammo and equipment, and we get cash rewards (bounty) for killing opponents. And of course cash for selling looted gear.

So if you can think of yourself as a special-ops mercenary that might help with the role-play.

The thing I find most important in role-playing - is other people who want to role-play.

On the server question - as far as I know they have no plans for separate servers for role-play, pvp etc.

You will find some Role Play here, but like others have already said, you will not find it much, or often. Good luck to you.

I think RPing in MMOs like TR is a lot easier then in other MMOs that are fantasy (High, Low, Sword and Sorcery type) oriented.

You can't break immersion by using l33t speak because of the setting.  You can curse like a sailor and it'd fit the setting.  You can be a lot of things and it'd be fine, but talking about present day issues like current politics, current religion, current sports, things like that,  would break immersion.

So, with that in mind, I hope we see a lot of RPing in TR, or at least less immersions breaking encounters.  Probably just a pipedream though...

Thank you for the replies, I could write a whole book on what about games encourages roleplay, but what the question really was I suppose it "Will the community suck for roleplaying?" I roleplayed in Lineage 2. It can be done anywhere. I'm just curious as to what sort of playerbase this game will draw. If I can't play without hearing "lol" every other sentence in spacial or atleast have the abililty to filter it out I won't play.

I'd love to see an active community of roleplayers who create storyline, events, multiple guilds etc. I've seen many games with dedicated roleplaying fansites, I've seen none of this game and was curious if I was missing one :)

Any online chat full of strangers is bound to have "lol".  If you're really bothered about that, just turn off chat.

No, but I'm more thinking on how a major part of the discussions will happen in the voicechat and not typed into "/say". That design choice makes the game less social, in my opinion, and social interaction is vital for a good roleplay environment.

I love this type of comments in post about roleplaying :)

Observer , how about. If he turns of Chat, insted he goes and buy single player game ? And you can do the same if you play with chat switched off ...

It is a fast paced shooter. Not the kind of game in which you expect role-play to florish. But who knows.

Voice chat is party only. I expect the people that use it would have used some other form of voice chat (like ventrilo) anyways.

Certainly hearing a voice that doesnt match the character male/female or pip squeeking teen wont help the role-play immersion.

BUt in a tense fight or ambush you can scream 'We got incoming!!!' over voice chat faster than you can type it - and thats role-play.

They have some military type emotes - salute and order pushups, and pushups that might help with the role-play.
