Fed up with WoW, need something else NOW.

As the title says, I'm fed up with World of Warcraft (been playing for about 3 years) and I'm looking for something new...ASAP. My prime concern is Warhammer Online, but that won't be around for a long while. I don't think I like Guild Wars enough to really stay with it for several months...so...

Ideas? Thanks. I don't mind if the MMORPG is free (or old), but I do prefer nice quality.

Play a single player, and pray for a WAR beta invite ;)

I agree with the OP on this one, I have been playing it since launch, and I'm just tired of it. Tired of never getting to see parts of the game I want to. I'm thinking about going back to FFXI or EQ2, but I dread relearning those. If Warhammer was out, I'd be all over it, but its not. so.... what is an mmorpg addict to do?!

What kind of game are you looking for? What does it need for you to enjoy it? Need these answers to help recommend something.

Well i'd recomend you try World in conflict (RTS) or Quake wars(FPS) both out in the next weeks, great graphics, fast paced, give the MMORPG genre a rest, who knows it might prove to be a welcomed change. However if you insist on playing these booring grindfests of excuses for online RPGs there is Vanguard saga of heroes and LOTRO which both are WOWised to a certain degree and give a good PVE experience, and both were launched recently. There are more but id focus on these 2 since you say you just ended a 3 year old wow relationship :P

I agree WoW is rubbish, never played it, never want to. GuildWars is awesome, u should really give it a go. IF no then i recommend sword of the ne world although it takes a while to download, Legend of ares is an awesome game or maybe if ur into more exclusive games for 17+ try 2 moons. Not the best game but worth a try. Im stickin wid guildwars cos im far on it. Hope u fnd what yer lookin for ^^

I tired of WOW (much sooner than you did) and found myself in the same quandary.  If you want a similar game experience, give LoTRO a try (unless you are a hard core raid instance raider, then you'll blow through it too quickly)

I went that route, but realized after about 6 years of fantasy MMO's I was burned out on the genre (and like you, eagerly awaiting WAR) so I decided to give EVE a try (hey it had a free trial).

Its worked our real well for me....gameplay is totally different and a nice change of pace..... will be my home until WAR or something else good releases....

Same for me with EVE. Unless you absolutely hate PvP, the game is wonderful. Been playing about 5 months now and don't see myself leaving anytime soon.

Everquest2.  If you like Wow, it's one of the few with better quality (and a lot of things imo although Wow is a good game).

In my opinion, forego PVP and join a non-PVP server.

I agree with this.  After that long of a WoW binge I don’t think you are going to like any of the MMOs out there.

LotRO will be too much like WoW for you.

I like CoX, but that’s not for everyone.

Lots of good non-MMO games out there.  A MMO break is always nice after WoW.

I wish I could recommend The Chronicles of Spellborn to you, but unfortunately it is not out yet. Just like WAR, but it will be out much sooner then WAR and certainly worth playing.

EQ2 is a bit of an acquired taste. Not something people used to WoW will immediately like, in my experience. But if you really need your poison now, you can always try it.

If you have a decent machine, now's a good time to join Vanguard, and if your skeptical, just wait for the free-trial.

  • orlacorlac Member Posts: 549

    EQ2 FTW.

If you look at most of the MMO's they have some free trials, even LOTRO have that if I remember correctly. Try them out.

Personally, I would suggest you try out EQ2: Play the fae (7 day trial).

But you dont wanna do that i can see, just stay out of Vanguard & LotrO and you should be o.k

Yeah, I used to be a crack head, but I quit that horrible stuff.

Now, I just hang out in crack houses and tell other people what flavors of crack suck and which ones are awesome.

Well I have a bunch of single player games...but how in the hell do you expect a single player game to keep my interest for 6+ months? Maybe a week, at most. Once I beat a single player game, it's pretty much over for at least a couple of weeks.

Still looking into Quake Wars. The last time I tried to play it, it gave me an installation error and crashed my computer. So I just haven't tried to download/install it again.

TO answer an earlier question, I come from the land of FPS games:

    INSTALL! > MULTIPLAYER! > KILL!

So I detest tedious and stupid annoyances in an MMORPG - which would seem that Guild Wars is perfect, but there's something about that game that bores me. I can't place my finger on it. When it comes down to it, I really don't mind games that take forever to level in (as long as it's not a nazi game like FFXI that de-levels you), as long as the PvP is balanced (you know, the skill > gear formula rather than World of Warcraft), the community is excellent (rather than Warcraft's community where there IS no community), and overall nice quality in the game.

I've been looking into some free MMORPGs, but it seems like you play one, you play them all. I really enjoyed Ragnarok Online, but I don't think it's a game that's worth my money every month (waiting on Ragnarok 2). There's always private servers, but those are always dominated by idiotic GMs and overall unfairness.

I'm extremely surprised nobody has recommended Eve Online.  The game's population is just constantly growing non-stop.  Its a very slow game in the beginning, so if you are kind of a...WoW noob....you probably won't have the patience to play it.

Also since you gain your skills through TIME and not grinding, you get some time off of the PC to do other things.  It just depends on your preference.  Impatient?  Don't even touch Eve.

How could you know it's rubbish if you never tried it?  It's one thing to be sick of the game, or try it for a while and realize you don't like it, it's another thing to assume it sucks without ever touching the game.  WoW is the most fluid MMO I have played yet, and that's important to me.

To answer the OP,  I don't think there is anything out right now that's worth playing (maybe EQ2... haven't tried it though).  I've been playing single player games for now.  Hopefully I get a WAR beta invite .  I just ordered Heavenly Sword and have been playing Odin Sphere.  I might reinstall GW one of these days and fuck around...  I never got that into it, but it might be something to do.

Eve can be ok, get in with the right crowd and your hanger will be full of T2 BPO's :)

I'll suggest RFonline, its just gone free 2 play and the population seems up, if you didnt try it before it might be worth a look.

Lol oh no. See, I've played Final Fantasy XI and EVE Online is at least 10x slower than that. I'm not a WoW noob (nor was I a noob when I started playing WoW), but there's no way in hell I would ever have the patience to play that game. Nor do I ever understand how the game even considers itself to be PvP-oriented.

The game doesn't look fast paced in the least bit to me, which is what PvP is all about. Maybe you gentlemen could prove me wrong by some videos, but until then ....heh...

Are you talking about EVE pvp vids? Here is a bigger vid for you (500mb) but it schows quite a lot of small scale pvp.

Btw: speed is not all there is to pvp, its just one dimension. Eve pvp is more strategic with the fight merely being the end of the chase/hunt/run through the star systems. A lot of fights are decided even before the start fights - except if the "victim" ship was bait and a bigger fleet is waiting next door for someone to take it.  Its all about strategy and good decision making. One mistake and your chance for survival goes down the drain.

That may what PvP has evolved into now, but the majority of people (me included) prefer fast paced PvP combat. EVE is just not my thing...at all :P

Maybe if they held your hand a little more rather than just shoving you out into space (I myself found the controls ridiculously confusing and nobody on the chat would give me a hand. The tutorial they give you before you head out into space doesn't really clear things up either).

I have been looking at Hellgate: London, but is that even considered an MMORPG? More like an MMOG? What exactly is it? lol...

I quit WoW back in may and I returned to DAOC. I was very happy and pleased. Old isnt a bad thing. Heck I was so clueless after not playing DAOC for 2 years, It was like a new game.
