This is from a transcript of a talk on MMO design by Jeff Strain of Guild Wars fame. YOu can read the whole thing here if you like:

From the talk:
According to James Phinney, lead designer of StarCraft and Guild Wars, every great game starts with one question: "What do I want to play next?".
I found this to be a really thought provoking question. I don't want this to become a debate on game design (PvP, PvE, ect.). I was hoping that without flaming each other folks would list what they personally would like to play next that they don't see on the market yet.
When I thought about it, I think I want a casual freindly PvE game with a casual freindly entertaining end game. Raiding and rep grinds do not do it for me. For an end game I'd like something with randomized content, highly randimized loot drops (randomized stats instead of the carefully designed "epics" of most games), and that scales to party size. Bascially I want something like WoW only with Diablo II as the end game instead of raiding.
What would you like to play next?
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

A tough and interactive game that is fast paced vs a lot of enemies, hellgate might be good for that; im thinking about trying it.
I was opposed to it till I found out its only part FPS with certain classes, and its not all soft aiming; there will be guns that dont lock.
Fact is Im looking for a game that has none of the elements that I hated so much in WoW. I hate to admit it, but a lot of what I think about MMORPGs nowadays is from the framework of WoW.
WAR Vs AoC look like they will be the next WoW Vs EQ2.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
the only MMO on the horizen i think ill really play is Lineage III
There's quite a few but I'll most likely be playing WAR for the next year or so.
None, all mmorpg's anymore are the same ole boring shit. They have worn me out of any interest at all of them. Only one I think I would CONSIDER playing is Ultima Online but that is because you can do what you want, when you want, and don't have to worrie about alot of stupid BS like in most of the others out now. But my main thing now adays is Xbox Live. As I enjoy REAL competition.
I'll keep playing well using second life for the building in it. and use it and wurm both for player controled worlds.
pretty much it'll be 15 years min until big league devs pull their heads out of their... everquest with a microscopic amount of D&D design.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Fact is, If your wanting to play a MMORPG, you have to go where other people are at. No good standing in a vast world with noone else around. Its for that reason a lot of influence on upcoming RPGs is for hype. PLayers can be very lemming-ish, also they want to follow their friends and guilds. So, I hate to say it, but the big games are likely what we will all play (or at least try).

I wanna play Hellgate...and I'm assuming no one can tell me about it since I think it just got into Alpha recently (I dunno, though, someone said that it had and that I still couldn't hear about it becase of the NDA...though the figurines were way overpriced just to get CB access)...also, is it true that the Tabula Rasa NDA was lifted?

I would want sci-fi theme skill based sandbox PvE mmorpg with crafting and purpose beyond character development.
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
I will most likeky continue playing what i am at the present time, although if and when Star Trek online comes out I may give it a run.
I am looking forward to Chornicles of Spellborn. A good combat system + items not important + not so much grinding = good.
Otherwise I would like to have an open pvp sandbox game with some sort of death penalty and reasons to fight. Pve can be in the game but should not be the main focus. All player roles should be intertwined and grinding amount should be under average.
AOC vs WAR: I am not sure about these games. They just look like modified WoW I vs modified WoW II. I will have to test them myself to see if they are worthy ^^

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
I wish to have games that have depth in character like FF
RIP Orc Choppa
I am just waiting for The Chronicles of Spellborn. It has everything I am looking for in an mmorpg. Great setting, fascinating lore, beautiful and original artwork, long quest lines, both instanced and non-instanced quests, dress to impress character creation, no stats on armour, skill based fight system, good balance between PvE and PvP, guild houses, and more.
The only drawback is that the game has not been released yet.
I am pretty sure Tabula rasa will be my next game to try, however i am in no way saying it's gonna be great until i at least try it first. After playing an innovative combat system like FFXI's using sub jobs and weapon skills and magic bursts/piercing/slashing/blunt weapons i have been spoiled into wanting nothing more than at least something on equal par. When i see games that just plot a bunch of mobs around with no thought whatsoever and then throw in a bunch of spells again with no thought ,it really cringes me.I won't be satisfied with a game until an innovative combat system comes along and if so be it ,PVP has to be a part of it ,then at least do away with lag issues and cheating.
My biggest concern over anything right now is a games legitimacy to keep RMT activities out.IMO ist isn't that hard to do,it just makes me wonder why devs are not showing any concern for it whatsoever.RMT activity totally ruins any chance of a PVP game, and ruins the whole game economy for all involved.Rmt activity in games pretty much make them a joke after the first mnth of playing.
You want an example of how bad RL trading ruins a game, look no further than silkroad online.Just the other day i saw a player selling a level 16 weapon for no less than a minimum of 40 million..rflmao ,that's insane.I don't care if it's seal of sun/moon or god himself that ruins the economy for all players, and is only achieved through RMT activity.Legitimate players would like a crack at the elite gear through alot of hard work and farming, not to be outdone by some lameass who went to some asian site and bought 40 million gold for 20 bucks.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I would love to play Warhammer Online next.
RL trading screws the hell out of games but...shit happens
