    Hmm, wasnt Guild Wars released 28/04/2005 and WoW - 23/11/2004?

    WoW didn't have battlegrounds on release......
    Guild Wars did.

    DAoC had battlegrounds too. But they were different. And are GW battlegrounds the same domination-ctf-whatelse modes?

    Hehe, they tried to do something, but couldnt. It's prolly not a reason to say it looks "wowish"...

    WoW's PvP for me is lowest any company can aim for when implementing it. PvP in WoW has absolutely no effect on the game world, it doesn't mean anyhting to anyone but yourself, all you do PvP for is to get points to spend on gear and that involves a long grind (much like the rest of WoW). Even if you like the battlegrounds, the game has been out for nearly three years and only has four. The Arena can be fun but again lacks variety.
    WAR will have on launch more scenarios than WoW has had battlegrounds in it's three years. WAR will have world PvP which WoW has not had since the implementation of battlegrounds. WAR will have city sieges which will dwarf WoW's early city fights which again haven't really happened since battlegrounds.
    WAR's PvP has eveything it needs to beat WoW's hands down.

    I believe that "harg" makes some really important points here.

    One of the great parts of WAR RvR is that the PvP will have a direct effect on the gameworld ... it will have meaning.

    WAR will have a variety of RvR experiences which will culminate in the actual attack on an enemy capital.

    As for the video in question, one thing I particularly noted was the environment.  It was complex terrain with sloping paths, stairs, walls, boulders, shrubs, bridges -- all allowing for varying kinds of tactics and special chokepoints to fight through.  This should also give both melee and ranged attackers differing areas from which to initiate their personal combat styles.

    I think it should also be noted that, while the combat is definitely fast-paced, it is by no means -- at this point -- "expert" combat.  The ring-around-the-rosy Orc would soon find his run-around tactics countered by ranged attackers who would not care how much he runs around ... as long as he remains in range.

    That rapid movement does work well against other melee attackers but the "nuke-masters" will just chuckle as they burn that guy down.  This video is still "gameday" stuff, but in the future when people have played their classes for weeks and months and have a great deal of battle experience, the battles should be extremely exciting and very well fought.

    ~~~
    Only sad thing is that I am not sure I will be able to play Destruction since I hate Greenskins soooooo much I probably will be playing on the Order side just so I can help exterminate those Greenskin bastards ... and their Chaos and Dark Elf cronies.
    I'm really looking forward to collision detection.  Lets say you wanna take a keep and have to get to the second floor to do so.  But on  the stairs is 2 rows of tanks blocking the entrance.  Behind the tanks and the healers and casters.  You wont be able to stealth or run by the tanks and get to the support.  You will actually have to fight your way through and kill the tanks before you get to the support.  That is going to require teamwork and tactics.  Not to mention prolly will make battles last longer.  Alot of other ways collision detection can be fun.  Also as far as moving goes.  Ever see Braveheart?  Once the two armies collide dont see too much movement from each fighter until no one in area around to fight. :P   On a side note, another reason I'm looking forward to war is class variety.  24 classes to choose from 12 on each side.  Wow has what? 8? that are the same classes on both sides.  IMO, bc expansion should have added more playable classes, forget hero classes just plain regular playable classes.
    looks alot like wow should be a great game for my kids
  • FikrocFikroc Member Posts: 166
    the more I hear "it looks like wow" the more I think of that phrase as a slow man's easiest response with the least ammount of thought. the lighting looks like daoc to me but no one has mentioned that fact at all from what i've seen. hell even the dwarf areas remind me of Midgard. good games are good games and new ones will improve on it if they're smart, not outright give up the idea b/c "its been done." that'd just be stupid. did wow have public quests? RvR? nah. the game is what it is and this one looks like its packed full of fun.
    I was going to think of a comical response to this but looked at your post history and saw all you seem to do is flame so I didn't bother.
    So few posts, so much anger.
    I am in the same boat. I used to just attack trolls but now I am starting to just relax and refuse to post back at them. I think it is better for everyone that way.
    Actually I can see quite a bit of similarity between that video and WOW, although I have seen plenty of others where it seems for like DAOC.
    Well, I liked both, DAOC more, but I still enjoyed pvp in WOW>
    I am not going to judge it until I play it.
    Quite possibly it will be unlike either of them.
