At last I checked, there are 8 million accounts on WoW. NOt that all of them represent single individuals. But if you assume there are 2 million players of WoW in the USA and the death rate of people in the USA is 8.26 deaths/1,000 population (CDC, http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm) then you would expect up to 16,560 dead WoW players each year. Obviously those numbers do not tell the whole story
The deathrate incluudes the very old and the very young, both have much much higher death rates than the general population. Generally these are not the ages associated with WoW use.
But just to make a point, someone dying whether while playing a game or not...people die. Many elderly die in thier sleep...should I blame the bed?
Since video games are the current punching bag of the clueless political types, that is why this is getting media attention. If this was the 1980's, when rock music was the Source Of All Badness, we'd be seeing reports of people who died while listening to <insert rock band name>.
The guy had some issues beforehand, the game he was playing didn't cause his death. It just happen to be the thing he was doing when he died. I like MMO's too, but jeebus I can't play for several hours at a time let alone 3 days! My butt would go numb well before that.

Yes.
But, this is rather sad no matter what people said. To be able to say that your friend died while playing video games on the internet -- what would that say about you? Assuming nothing, of course, but it would brand you as a nerd too.
If someone die from playing a game 3 days straight they deserve to die. If your brain can't click on and tell you hey turn off this computer and get up and do something. There is no hope for some people in this world you can't blame this on the game. They need to blame this on people stupidity.

The way I see it, someone stupid enough to kill himself by playing a game for days on end is also stupid enough to get himself drunk, go out for a drive, and get himself and several others killed in a crash. If the poor dumb bastard is going to die through his own actions, at least in front of the computer he won't be taking anyone with him.
Yes, yes, I know the above scenario is a bit of a stretch, but the point still stands.

i think its more like your brain cant click on and say hey.....shouldnt i try sleeping sometime? I hear pretty often of these chinese people dying from playing games for 2-5 days straight (famous video of the guild crashing ingame funeral on WoW) but I have never heard of someone from the U.S dying from playing constantly or any other country. Maybe they should have time limits or the owners should be watching the time at these internet cafe's since thats where I always hear about these people dying at.
It's not likely but it is possible for a game to add some subliminal content to make the game more addictive. I'm just saying it is possible.
It's also possible that a person's monitor – refresh rate and other optic issues could cause a hypnotic state. Just like how a TV show can give kids seizures.
I'm just listing some possibilities here.
You people are always so quick to say "no way in hell can it be the games fault" But why not? Games aren't perfect.
And now its the games fault and not the fault of the man playing it since we all know that individual accountability in this world no longer has any meaning.
And nobody at the cafe noticed that ? I don't know if i was the owner of an internet cafe i would be worried to see the same guy sitting for 3 days straight.
Hehe i love the Internet/Forums, above me is someone who is saying that a game caused the death of a human being. !?! Even if the game did cause him to die, it is his fault for playing it.
Do you know what "Possible" means? It is not the same as ‘is, did, does or will”. I am saying “it could”. Meaning out of N times, 0 or more could be caused by the game. What I was saying is logically correct.
Did you know that we all blink less when looking at a monitor? There are physical factors involved. Did you know that a TV show was proven to cause seizures?
What I am displaying is called open mindedness.
It wasn’t too long ago when people said cigarettes have no negative side effects. Any health problems were pre-existing.
The only way I could conceive that it was "the game's fault" is if it actually did contain subliminal content designed to influence the player into playing longer. Which is a positive statement that would require proof. Without proof, all you are left with is are the physical effects of computer monitors and TV screens on people. Which would actually be an artifact of the refresh rate and therefore the fault of the hardware, assuming it could actually induce a 72 hour marathon hypnotic session and cause a death. Not whatever programs he was running or what he was viewing.
Thats why its silly, you're trying to link a logical possibility that the game he was playing had hypnotized him into playing until death. Anything is logically possible if it doesn't contradict itself. Its also logically possible that he had connections with the Russian mafia and was hiding in the net cafe but was found and was fed a rare poison by their hit men. Its also logically possible he was terminally ill and the Chinese government promised to provide for his family if he stayed up in a net cafe until he died so they could impose stricter laws. Its also logically possible that an amazingly large grouping of quantum particles suddenly left his body to make up some other part of the universe for long enough to cause heart failure before returning.
A good point someone else brought up, why does this always happen in an Asian countries and not in America.
Simple – first American are fatter, I could live off of my own fat for about 2 years. Secondly – They eat with chopsticks, making it harder to eat and play at the same time. Americans eat pizza, hot pockets or cheese puffs – which we can eat with one hand while we play.

So you're saying pizza is a good survival food...... glad I eat so much of it.....

Can I have his stuff?
Was he listening to Judas Priest while playing? It might be their fault then...

Maybe he suddenly realized how cartoony the warcraft online graphics are and dropped dead?
This made me laugh harder then anything I have read on this site. Man I love dark gamer humor.

I wonder why nobody noticed that he'd been there for 3 days. You'd think the owner of that cafe wouldn't want him to die in there.
