Thinking of coming back

Woodwind88Woodwind88 Member Posts: 34

I played EQ2 for awhile back at the start, leaving the game with a paladin at 29, guardian at 21 and several alts around the same. I have heard that there have been quite a few changes since then...would it be worth coming back? Anyone from the begining days mind filling me in on the changes?

Thanks

- Woody

I played eq2 for the first month it was out then canceled my sub. A couple days ago I came back. Theres a lot of little changes in the game, no groundbreaking ones but its definitely a lot more polished this time around. The Antonius Bayle server seems pretty populated (its a RP server but i wont hold that against it) so I don't feel that i'm going to have to buy the new expansions, at least not till i make sure i want to keep playing.

Also for some reason or another I seem to be able to play for free, so who knows maybe theres some sort of veteran bonus for old subs, or im on some sort of trial I'm unaware of.

I just recently got into the game, but I too have also heard that the game has definitely changed for the better.  I can't tell you all the changes, but here's a link for ya that may tell you some stuff.

Check out this little Re-review of the game over at TenTonHammer: http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/12034

Awesome, thank you Bigfoot. It does look alot better than before and the article there about how most players left fits. Would be interesting to see the Fae.

I was also one of those that played the first or first two month at the launch, and then left. Have joined and I would recommend it.

First off. That article on Tentonhammer.com think is too thin to describe a mmo (1 zone, 1 character, maybe 5-6 hours of play). It doesn't give anything more, even less, compared to downloading the free trial (play the fae) and actual try out the game.

What have changed to EQ2? Some general opinions from me (no particular order):

    • Zones and quests changed to be more balanced between solo, group and raid. Now you can easily solo up to the cap by doing quests, or you can group up to the cap with quests and dungeon runs. The game does still focus on group play, but it's not a requirement any more.
    • Easier access to better items. Rare stuff isn't that rare, but at the same time the rarest (some raid items) are still not that common. You don't need to play way too much to get access to the decent items and upgrades.
    • Balance between PvE classes are rather good, everyone do have a function in group, and maybe more important; all classes can solo without too much trouble. Too much feelings in the PvP thingy, so I don't want to touch that :)
    • PvP servers. Some like it, some don't, some hate it...but they do have PvP servers.
    • More custominizations within a class (achievement trees)
    • Alot more content, with alternative zones.
    • Less single target short-term buffs that needs to by cycled (I played Enchanter at the launch)
    • Better performance in the game and newer computer spec on the players, which makes the game run better.

This is a bit overall points, but I don't think its needed to go and look at all the detail game mechanics that has changed, since that is probably way too much to list. But, you will see that the game do have more positive responses now than it had for just one year ago. I believe that is due to a good effort from the developers, but also that the playerbase has grown a bit.

I played from November 2004 till now, game is just awesome. So many good changes since release and so much new content gets added for free and I love the regular yearly expansions. Kunark is going to be even better with the mostly zone-line free zones. Think no more loading screens when going to different areas. The 1-20 starting zone in Kunark is going to be twice the size of commonlands and the new 1-20 zone is the smallest one in the kunark expansion if that gives you any hint to the world size. I've got two 70s and a ton of various lower level alts, I do not find myself bored with my 70s, and I have no issues finding groups with my alts at the lower levels. (Crushbone server)

They have flipped the game to a casual game.  They took away alot of the forced group requirements.  It is a really fun game.

It does sound alot better than when it was first released, thanks for all the info guys. Sounds like a good balance they have going now, I was pretty disappointed when it was released but sounds like they addressed most if not all of the issues. I have found a few more friends recently going back to it and I think that it may be alot more fun second time around. Would be very interesting to see how Kunark is now and to actually be on the good side of a Sarnak lol... Always nostalgic to go back into the EQ world. Funny how even virtual worlds can hold such memories for us huh? Thanks for the info all you may see me returning
