O Stargate while possibly, there is a game coming out and frankly its looking like they are going the route of SWG in that they are picking a time frame from within existing cannon that leaves them no wiggle room
Actually that not true as far the time frame does, CME has too pick some type of reference points to establish the initial release of the game, they have options to expand on this. ie expansions. Plus they are working closely with the producer and writers of Stargate in developing the game, not only for current release but for future also, including StarGate Atlantic I am hoping that they will incorporate some of the best feature of SWG before SOE mess it up into the game. So they have plenty of room to wiggle as to speak.
Sometime I think people get confused by what is Sci-Fi and what is Fantasy, particular when the game which is truly fantasy is wrap up in a Sci-Fi blanket. I know SGW is going to rock, because it will be a game that will require you to think, instead of hitting buttons or setting up marco for auto-attack and just stand there toe to toe and see who can do the most damage. I for one is looking forward to a game like this.

Sorry they've already blown this as far as changing the existing story, they are making Asgard a playable race and while there may have existed lots of them within the universe having lots of them running around yelling "WTB !!!! or WTFPWNZZ!!!" is going to destroy any semblance of immersion and credibility that the game gives the series. Not to mention lots of other threads on the forums blasting the devs for using the Asgard with lots of other suggestions that would probably long term be more useful.
For that matter seeing 50 Asgard running around is going to destroy the look and feel of Stargate for most people.
You can make something work, but that doesn't mean that you are not going to destroy the existing "look and feel" of what previously existed. You can disagree all you want, just remember how often within the series you saw 50 Asgard at once.

Well yes, there will be something’s that will not be cannon, I mean personally i do not think Asgard and Goa'uld should be playable races, but the dev made that decision. Having said that, how many mmorpg had you seen that everything is truly cannon. Immersion is what you make of it, credibility again dependent upon the type of players you are, some people are hard-core cannoites, others are not.
For me immersion and credibility is what I make of it, can the game immerse me overall and within the game itself, does the story/contents /characters in the game are credible that I can see it as a possibilities or it is too far fetch. it is not the objective of the game and the game company is to use the show/cannon as the guideline that will allow the users to enjoy the game for a long period of time, if they not allow to depart from it in a creative way, I think it may make the game too rigid, but should we allow devs to be creative and move slightly apart from it, enough to where it is believable but still keeping to the true overall cannon of the show, meaning if 90% of the game is still true to cannon, does it make a difference that perhaps 10% of less of the game is not cannon, as long and the look and feel of it, it still cannon? I do not expect to see every game that have a license like this, to be 100% cannon, if that was the case then the developers are not free to creative or do things that will improve on the game and experience of the original ip.
Still holding my breath hoping for a FireFly/Serenity mmog! I think the "mercenary" theme would be a great premise and it would bring back a lot of us fans that we're left hanging.
I'm convinced that if someone did make a half way decent sci-fi MMO, Eve would die in a matter of months. The ONLY reason Eve lives on is because there's so few options in the Sci-Fi genre and most of us would rather play a decent fantasy game than a lame sci-fi one. Tried Eve twice, have no clue what anybody sees in that game aside from pointless snazzy graphics.
E&B did it right, but EA is too "bottom-line" oriented. It wasn't making enough money for them so they shut it down. Can't say I really blame them for that, but the honest truth is it was one of the better Sci-Fi MMO's available.
It was the only sci-fi game that ever held my interest. I think it is harder to translate sci-fi into a standard MMORPG. Take Tabula Rasa for example or even current SWG . The WOW style mixed with third person shooter just does not do it for me. I need that excellent deep game play that classic SWG provided. The ability to be unique in both appearance and profession is paramount to the success of a futuristic game.
Having the same styles and armor and abilities as everyone else might be established enough in the fantasy genre to be tolerated by the players but sci-fi fans have already experienced a better system through classic SWG and they will not settle for a WOW clone.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
One problem with sci-fi MMO's is that they dont work with the current MMO template [ ie Leveling Grinding mobs etc such as whats found in games like WoW ]. To make a sci-fi game that woks you need to do what eve did. And that was to bereak the classic MMO mould mentioned before and to create something new.Now eve isant 100% perfect [mainly due to lag problems produced by a single server system].
But netherless ignoring the lag its hard to disagree that EvE is an inovative design that has the potetial to be a trully wonderfull and different game. As it is i and 210,000 players do still like it and one day ower sub fees will help CCP to find a solution to the alg thing [which amy be comming soon in fact]. So to make a Sci-fi game that works make one thats not based on a WoW level grind game.
