I was wondering how much fun it would be to come back into this game with four friends (total of 5 with me ) and all started new characters? I wouldn't be interested in the new content once so ever and wouldn't really want to buy any more expansions if I didn't have to. I would think we could progress at a good rate if we all filled healing, tank, dps, etc. roles.
I played EQ back in the day so I am used to the game. But some of my friends have never played it or played EQOA so they might get turned off by the slow combat.

if you did you get the anniversary edition and you get 30 days subscription as well as all the expansions. I don't know how they'd find it, it could be quite dated but then again they could find a class that sucks them in.
It could be fun if your friends got into it. Removing the LFG element, it is as fun as it ever was, IMO, even in new content. A 5 person group should find plenty to do at every level. I really envy you if you're in the situation of having a regular group to get online with.
As mentioned above, the Anniversary pack contains all expansions anyway for about $20 (slightly less at some online retailers-- combined ordering from Amazon could net you free shipping and a couple of bucks off for everyone...). It is really the way to go if you're buying. You can use it to upgrade your old account, too.
TSS is a little WoWified, but you might find that you like it as a newbie experience. Some of the old newbie cities and zones in the old world have been revamped, as I am sure you've heard. (Alas, poor Freeport! I knew it well...) Some are done really well and others... eh... not so much.
You may have a point about the slow combat, though. Returning from WoW and EQ2, it really stood out. It will really be a matter of picking the right class for each person (as also mentioned above). Everybody has something to do in combat, after all, and some people have plenty to keep them busy. Some classes have more responsibilities and more buttons to push, so if someone picks a class that's not working off the bat, they should just try another. There's enough variety between the classes to really get a different "feel" from each, as you probably know, since you've played before.

And completely throwing this out there kinda off subject but new Freeport looks bad and is really confusing. Some of the other revamped zones looked good but I thought Freeport was fine and I can't find anything there now. Just venting a little frustration since it was brough up haha.

I was going to do this with my friends too. The only issue became that our personal lives conflicted a bit too much with being able to progress through all 75 levels. So, what we ended up doing was going with SoD. Its more relaxed. I think that the content in general (zones/storylines/etc) are slightly annoying only because they are so different from eq live, but its still good stuff. You might want to consider it.
However, if you guys all could play at the same time you would probably just plow through the first 50-55 levels reletively quickly (I would assume that most zones kunark - pop are completely empty these days).
I have to agree with whats been said. EQ1 with a solid, steady group in my mind is the most fun any MMO has to offer.
Let me know how this goes for you guys and if you get this up and running.
