Is this another Vanguard in the making?

ZooomgZooomg Member Posts: 84

Vanguard was released before it was "finished" i.e. ready for prime time.  It crashed and burned.  Even now, the future is bleak for that game as a lot of gamers had boycotted and warned their friends away from that piece of crap.

After playing TR, I get the feeling that it is heading down the same path.  Has potential but incomplete, buggy, unbalanced, unpolished and when the masses login the game on Day 1, the negative perception will just be enhanced.  Drawing a parallel, we also have a well known figurehead to the game (Brad and Garriot), we also have publishers just pushing for it to be published i.e. NCSoft vs SOE.

Will they never learn?

Well there are quite a few differences between T.R and Vanguard.

    - for starters T.R will run on any decent PC released in the last twelve months.
    - its aimed at casual players
    - it rarely crashes
    - it fast paced - so more an action RPG
    - its not a 20 gig download
    - there are no elves

Odds are good IMO simply because even if your anti-social soloist or a casual gamer your going to have 2-3 level 50's at endgame within two months of launch.  So unless teh devs have hidden secrets up their sleeves or are able to pump out content at an unprecidented level the odds that even the soloists and the casuals get burned out before the first expansion are high.

Not to mention the similarities here are high...

    1.  A game that promised alot but didnt provide

    2.  A beta full of testers begiging them not to launch this early

    3.  And a big name has-been trying to come back into the market and even going so far to put his name on the box.

    4.  No endgame group content.

Having played both betas I'd have to say no.  Tabula Rasa is lacking content and depth, but for the most part plays smoothly.  Vanguard was lacking content and had horrible gameplay.

yeah i agre, TR lacks game content and depth but its relatively unbuggy and plays smooth. where as VSOH was a absolute horrid fiasco of buggyiness, unfinished features, and too numerous to name issues. i think the main problem with TR is people will finish everything in about 2 months and be bored as hell. i know i played the beta and foiund myself getting bored and otherwise uninspired to play by lvl 15. to me its very reptitive. not innovative at all. yeah its a scifi MMO but its not a really good one. hopefully in the near future we will have a better selection of contenders to pick from.

I so deperately wanted this to be good, but it feels very unfinished atm.

If it survives 6 months, will take a look at it again then.

    Currently Playing Nothing...

i m not quite sure what you mean by decent pc . mine i would say is a mid range pc which was puchased 8 months ago . admitidly not exactly a games pc but it runs most new games pretty smoothly with a little tweaking here and there (essentially similar to what the majority of the public have).  i m finding that tabula rasas graphics seam to be very freeze a lot and can be jerky at times .  i have tried it on a slighly older ( but more powerful pc as well with the same results ) . i imagine given its an open beta perhaps the problems i m experiancing could be due to its unfinnished status ?  after playing for five days i m finding the gameplay a little too repedative for me . i would nt say its as bad as vanguard but in its current state i think it needs a lot of work before its ready for release . even if i could run it smoothly i dont think i would buy it  . it just seams a bit limited for a mmorpg ( more so than vanguard ).

For someone who might be new to games it might look like that, also for someone who is uncappeble to addept to new situation it also might look like that. But for those open minded and wanting another experiance then a grind my ass of experiance might find their fun in TR.

Fun has many lvl's, it's a shame for some they seem to have only one lvl of fun.

Why, when NcSoft has thrown 6 years at this project, and probably over a hundred million dollars, has shown great patience and even foolish indulgence...does the publisher really deserve the blame? Isn't it the NcSoft Austin office and RG the ones responsible?

actually a better comparison than vanguard would be auto assault. they all sound great on paper, offer something new.....then you play and realize theres alot missing  the most important thing being fun.

    QFT

And, also remember that NCSoft does NOT have an 'All Access Pass' program.  When a game that they own fails, it's "Game Over, Man!"

Wouldn't pay a dime of my MMORPG budget to purchase and subscribe to this.  Just not enough there to justify MMORPG box and sub price.

Yeah, but Auto Assault made it to the headlines for a couple days and then silently vanished quite vertiginously, so practically no one knows about what's up with that game. Instead, Vanguard went down with a whole slew of fireworks and shrieks of doom, which made it very noticeable. So, let's say that maybe this is another Auto-Vanguard on the making.

I'm only level 14. What level does the lack of content kick in?

i would nt say i m new to gaming . i ve been  playing since the late 80s . not would i say i m unadaptable . lets face it we adapt with every new game we play . the comments i made are only my first impressions and in no way do i think tabula rasa will be a bad game when its finnished . the interface is actually pretty easy to master .  thus far i m not impressed enough to buy it and pay a monthly fee but i m going to give it a good go and see how it progresses . these type of games need to grab me within a the first week or two of play ( which lords of the rings warcraft and city of heroes did ) outside of the hardcore mmorpg player, i think that true of most gamers .

  • No it won't be another vanguard, the game is pretty solid at the moment for me.  Other than what is probably a memory leak crashing my game after about 5 hours I have not had many technical issues.  Some people complain about lag but I have had much except in the super populated instances.

For the most part the game has normal content bug (stuck doors, a boss not spawning etc.) and has mob and tier 4 class balance issues.

Whether it will be another Auto Assault I am not sure.  Most people saying that haven't been to the planet Areiki (for levels 20+) which is basically the first time you run into stuff that can kill you really fast.

TR will be surprisingly successful.  remember, this forum is not even a marginal fraction of the audience out there.

Basically, TR hits the things that a majority are looking for to some degree, especially the casual adult gamer.

Just watch what happen within the next year. TR is NO Vanguard, this wasn't put together by Sigil...lol..

on a side issue. funny how the word Vanguard now seams to be synonymous with everything that opitamises a bad mmorpg now . tabula rasa wont be as bad as vanguard but it wont be a massive success either ,more a minor success something on a par with dungeons and dragons . as much as i d like to say otherwise , i ve thus far seen nothing in this game that ll attract people away from world of warcraft or any current other game world they are happily emersed in  . in some ways vanguards been good for the mmorpg market more as a cautionary tale . i doubt if anyone will release as unfinnished a game again . anyway i m off to play more tabula rasa . i m enjoying it as a freebie , it makes a change .
