It's your money... If you don't like the rule set, take your money somewhere else! From a business point of view, I'm guessing they found it more profitable to appeal to those who date online than those who have an hardcore need to play their opposite gender.

About your private life comment... It's stupid. If you don't want to answer personal questions in an MMO, don't play MMOs that ask you to provide personal information. It's kinda like entering a mall... They don't care if you don't like their security cameras.

That doesn't invalidate my point. This information is not needed for me to play. Now, if they bill their MMO as a dating service as well, I'm okay with it, but if not, then they need to get boycotted big time.

if you ask me, this is a gooood thing.

The end of the "shim" discussion.

No more can immature players go around calling every female character a shim, nor can anyone claim it's just a guy wanting free money

Too bad western MMO's dun do that

It's not particularly a good thing IMO.

What if the male character model looks hideous ? some people wants their character to look good, even if they have to play female character for it.

The rule is just dumb, people should have choices of what they want to play(and don't even get started again about how China is a Communist country, because it's not even relevant to the topic here, it could as well be a Korean or Japanese company that did this).

Work content filter is blocking a lot of pages here so I cant tell if this has been raised previously. To me its obvious so I would guess it probably has.

    a) most MMOs are third person view

    b) I spend hours online, with my ingame avatar occuping the center of my screen.

    c) I have no interest in spending that time staring at a "guys" ass. It just isnt as aesthetically pleasant.

    d) my ingame avatar is NOT me.

To sum it up, I use female toons because I prefer seeing them in front of me.

and now to move into flame territory..

most male avatars are overdeveloped muscle lumps, to the extent they qualify as gay-porn pinups.. either that or the weedy/obese kiddies are compensating for RL inadeaquacies.

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.
    Now .. Go away.

what about people that make toons of the opposite sex just because they like too look at the opposite sex when they play, i almost always make a lady toon becasue i like too look at ladies for 5 hours a day rather than a man.

I honestly do not see a problem with this.  If you are a transgender person then you will pass the webcam test.  Since you dress as a member of the opposite sex anyways.

RPing purposes is a pretty weak excuse since you can't really RP a female if you don't live as one in RL.

I think maybe what Gameloading said Ragnarok does would be good for all games.  It would really cut down on the "female" begging characters.

Plus people who don't dress and act like a female (or are females) in RL, but they play as one on a video game are a bit twisted.  And if you honestly do it because you like looking at a female Toon's behind, then you have a ton of other issues and really need to get out and interact with the opposite sex in the real world.

A Character is meant to be played as an extension of yourself.  That is why people become so attached to the characters they create.  So it is pretty weird to play female characters and not actually be a "female" in RL.  ( I consider anyone who dresses and acts like a female in RL, female enough to play a game as one.)

I think its a good thing to do because the last thing I want is my group or raid to wipe because some guy can't help but squeeze one off to the pixelated girl on his screen.  Seriously guys, that excuse is lame. You guys can honestly say when your running around in game your focusing on the ass of your character?  If thats the case, maybe you should relieve yourself before you play.

interesting topic. sometimes I make a female toon along with my male toons. I always tell people im a guy they can hear my voice on vent. but now reading this topic makes me feel queezy

on a role playing server I would never make a girl toon though. now that would be weird talking all girl like in chat that thought i just cant bare but I guess whatever floats their boat

It's not about turning the MMO into a dating chat room, it's about expanding their player base into those that frequent such chatrooms. I don't see how billing has anything to do with it. You'll play it only if you want to play it. I don't like games that make me a girl for wanting to play a Mage/Archer/Whatever, thus I don't play them... If that's the boycot you're talking about, by all means do so.

Most people are however paying too much atention to this thing of them not allowing men to play women(Which is nothing new in Asia), but what strikes me more retarded is the webcam feed thing. It's soooo easy to fool.

THIS is why internet anonymity is SOOO important. Once they have you playing their game these suits think they are gods and that their rules and EULA supercede the wants and needs of the player.  Oh and it doesn't stop there with these game dev(il)s, govts, corporations, beaurocracies of all sort seek to put you under theirethumbs. When will the people standup for whats right? Heh, any game ever ask for authentification on webcam from me will get the biggest middle finger they've ever seen. Period.

Well it's not the first time such absurd rules are applied. Heck I work at the tourist industry and some of the Chinese laws are pretty much stupid. Thing is this particular rule violates the right to privacy, so pretty much the company opens doors to customers to be able to sue. There is no such law in china that forbids it and the views of a company regarding the gamestyle of players is irrelevant if it comes in contrast with international laws.

It would be intersting to see when the first lawsuits will start coming and how much money they will pay for settlement.

There is no individual right to privacy in China.  The State owns the individual, the individual exists to serve the State.  I next expect the government to restrict internet use and online gaming to members of the Communist party.

Many religions, cultures and societies have laws against cross-dressing, both for men and women.  In NYC, many functions that traditionally include cross-dressing (i.e., Black's Ball) are or were held on Halloween because that was the only day of the year when cross-dressing was not an arrestable offense.  I don't know if those laws are still on NYC's books.   FYI, women wearing men's clothing is also considered cross-dressing.   The underlying rationality of the transvestite laws is to prevent public deception.  When you use an avatar to deceive others about your sex, I suppose a case can be made for regulation.

Trying to control public exposure to cross-dressing is not new or novel.  As we allow more and more direct outside contact and influences into our homes, it seems only prudent that governments would attempt to control behaviors that are still against the law of the land.  I guess, in a way, you are "misrepresenting" yourself to the "public" by playing a character of the opposite sex, expecially since the idea of "role-play" has virtually disappeared.  Most of us don't think of our characters as an independent, imagined and created entity acting in a scripted and prescribed way, but as an extension of ourselves.  Therefore, the attempt to deceive can be presumed to be actively present.

Crazy ass chinese... someone should explain to them what the RP in mmoRPg means.

  • fatalimpactfatalimpact Member Posts: 32

They probably made that rule so you guys will throw a bitch fit about that instead of any bug related issues that need to be fixed.  If you people aren't griping about one thing, your griping about something else.  Their game, their rules.

This is funny and sad at the same time. The only reason to do this is so the lame guys that sexually harrass people playing female toons can be assured that they are indeed harrassing the correct sex. Somebody with the power to do this probably cybered with some female toon and found out it was a guy. I can't see any other reason than to make sure the pinheads are cybering the correct sex. I can't believe that people still equate a female toon with a RL female.

Its also sad that this is causing such an uproar.  You can't play a female character... so what?  Will playing as a male character put that much of a damper on your gaming experience?

  • maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,197

Well traditionally you would hope (most people) that when you are playing with a female toon that she is, indeed female.  Mainly because those who spend 40+ hours a week playing said MMO's don't exactly have enough time, or ability to speak to females outside of a game.  This is probably indeed a dating trick, and an easy way to scope out some girls with a web cam.

Personally I like to make toons for all of my friends when I play a game, including my fiance' and my lady friends, and I often play as them, as well as male toons of my friends too. (I think it's funny when you get the toon to look just like someone you know).

True this is somewhat a type of discrimination, it has to be somehow. But then again what do they care, that's the world they live in. The same thing would never happen in America unless it was a dating MMO as someone had previously said, and even then I seriously doubt they'd be able to stop people from playing opposite sex toons. What a joke.

That you find this restriction so benign is kinda scarey.

Is it scary?  How about the fact that some of these guys will not play a game based solely on the fact that they cannot play a female character.

I don't see it as a great idea, but I also don't see why everyone is complaining.
