I personally don't call it an MMORPG <---(Notice the "G" it stands for "GAME") I call it "one of them 3d chatrooms"
Ok, can you make things in GoW, CoD4 & EQ2 and then place them around the world? I don't think so.
In SWG people can build a city and with that the game also lag a lot.
And Second Life is an old game. So yes it will not look or work like GoW etc... it's not even that kind of game...

I have not played any MMORPG without any lag. Sure some runs better then others, but it's still lag.
And AO lags a lot and it's old. SWG lags a lot and it's also old.
New servers for SL might help some.

Just a couple of questions. What's with the different colour font each time you reply?
And what do you usually do when you are in Second Life?
Ok, can you make things in GoW, CoD4 & EQ2 and then place them around the world? I don't think so.
And by saying that you're implying that SLs bad performance is due to the fact that you can create and place items around in the world? You don't know much about computers in general do you?
In SWG people can build a city and with that the game also lag a lot.
I haven't played SWG
And Second Life is an old game. So yes it will not look or work like GoW etc... it's not even that kind of game...
What does it matter if it's "not that kind of game"? My performance is better in games that look 10 times better than this game. Why would it matter "what kind of game" it is?

You're arguing a strawman since none buys a new computer every month. So what would make you think that YOU would have to?

Yes people can make all kind of items, cloths etc. And yes I think that makes the game lag. It's not clones like other games have. Here players look different. The server must work harder and my computer must think more.
And again Second Life is an old game. So it will never ever work like new games do. It's not build that way.
In SWG people also look different. Also in Anarchy Online. Both games lag a lot.
Second life too...
About the computers. What I'm saying is... IF the game get a new system, that ask more from your computer. Then maybe people must ugrade the computer (buy a new one).
Look at WoW for example. It's made so a lot of people can play it. Some say it look good some think it look old.
IF Blizzard change the game, then they will see that poor people will not be able to play the game anymore. They don't have the money.

It wasn't meant for JUST roleplay. It was meant for those to build and sell their creations. You went in with the wrong expectations, so the only one you can hate is yourself.
Second Life may lag but its not developed like other games. It doesnt render off a CPU as its relatively impossible to force this unless you have an integrated graphics card (from intel or what have you) SL streams to you computer much like a shoutcast radio station would. Your loading the 3d objects. SWG , Anarchy Online, WoW and guild wars and all other mmorpgs store mass amounts of data right on your computer so your rendering it directly off your HD. Once things are cached in SL they tend to load relatively fast and alot of people that think they have good internet connections really dont there is the fact that for instance Cable is rubbish in High traffic areas and DSL is slow (but more stable)
It also comes down to hardware and alot of people really dont have very good computers. SL runs fine for me on the newest first look viewer with everything cranked up. I run an AMD Sempron 2400+ 2 gigs of ram and Geforce 6800 GS (overclocked edition) Not a grand computer the processor is maybe 1.66 > 1.74 ghz not dual core and it runs SL along with photoshop dreamweaver and Zbrush. Just because you couldnt find your niche doesnt make it a bad game.
To those testing it out for like a few hours serious get over it your not gunna learn jack in that time frame and if your not willing to put anything in your not going to get anything out (by put something in i mean effort into exploring the world) SL is a grand world where you can do anything you want literally your not limited to a special path like an MMORPG like WoW etc. If you despise it stay off and get over it its not the kind of game you like and its clear you had the wrong expectations going into it.
I played second life for maybe few minutes...nice idea really...but let me ask you (people who play):
- is it usual that when someone come online get contacts from others with sexual offers because they wana have virtual sex with "new" players?
- second, when you are so fendly and all...will you give me few Linens to kick off ? I mean yesterday i talked with some guy lvl 30 in Warcraft who asked me to help him with some things about his armor, weapons, talents etc then i gave him 30 gold to get easyer trough start of game?
--------------------> Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Not usual to get that kind of an IM, no. But I've actually gotten that kind of IM in other games before too, so it isn't something limited to Second Life.
I, personally, wouldn't give you money in Second Life. Then again, I wouldn't give you money in any other game I've played over the years either.
Second Life can be a very entertaining experience, but it's not immediately obvious to most people, and I think it will really only appeal to a certain kind of gamer. Twitch gamers will not like it.
Honestly. The only thing good I've found in second life is to make pretty 3d model character portraits.
<-----------
Like this one.
That's as far as Second Life goes for me.
If you don't like sex or constantly buying buying buying pixels: this game isn't for you. There is too little interaction other people and content. Not to mention the loading lag and resources required to just explore around.
I actually came to Second Life expecting to Role Play. It didn't even cater to that. Even Furcadia is better than this.

There is too little interaction and content? Lets just say, you FOUND too little. Or did you visit all of the ....10.000+ Sims? I bet not.
I play SL now for over 14 months, and every time i log in and fly around a bit, i see new stuff. There is SO much content around, you just have to find it
Yes, the Sex, buying "frontage" is huge. But behind it, if you look awhile, there is so much more
But you have one point i like to coment: Expectation. Many people dont like SL, because they expected something else. That ok, of couse.
You want to roleplay? What kind of roleplay? There are many many RP communitys, for many many many seetings.
And yeah, the lag etc....well, the concept of SL does not allow another system than streaming everything on your computer. Its like constant "patching". There is about 100 Terabytes of Data in SL and on the servers. Thats 100.000 Gigabytes. Millions and millions of theoretically everchanging objects.... You cant compare it with "regular" MMOs etc, where you have your 10 Gig Client (which "just" has to render the world, that is generally smaller, and not changing, from the data that is on your pc) where all the data is stored.
For example, WoW: Blizz wants to add another horde camp to the world, you get a patch and there it is. But in SL everything is changing all the time...its a totally different concept and therefore, common systems are not working with it.
No, ofcourse its not perfect. But i want to see someone doing it better!
I really didn't like this game either. It requires you to learn it's code and you really don't do anything. I mean, who would pay 1,000$ to buy "Land" in the game for your house. It's rediculous.

No, it dont requires you to learn the LSL. (But if you do so, even better^^)
I bet people who can burn their money would do so, for your house excample. But most people cant, so they buy land for 1000 USD, resell ist and make 1200 USD Most people resell their land
For just placing a house, a small plot of land is enough for which you pay 5-10 USD per month. Compareable with fees for "common" MMOs. But why? Why play common MMOs and hunt for pixel weapons to make your char better? Why buy a house (or make it yourself!) or clothing in SL for you Avatar? I dont know.
I still frequent SL, but one thing that bothers me is the lack of consistency in the LSL language which makes it hard to manipulate objects in the environment. Consider the fact that a scene node in a 3d renderer has no specification as to how many objects that can be attached to it, yet if you want to make an object in SL (or attach multiple objects together) there is *no* LSL equivalent.
Here's an example of what I mean.
Sphere objA = new Sphere(); Cube objB = new Cube(); Node nodeA = new Node(); objA.consistency(SQUISHY); objB.consistency(RIGID); objA.attach(objB); objB.align(LEFT); nodeA.attach(objA);
By this structure it would be pretty intuitive to spawn objects, even create layers of objects which would be attachable to nodes, which in themselves would have relative coordinates (versus absolute offset). And you would also have the option to create cameras which, for non-standard avatars (mechs, cars, and etc) would be great. LSL, to my knowledge, doesn't provide this degree of flexibility.
Then again, there are other issues, texture optimization, lack of shader programming API, and so forth. Basically, SL is someone's project, but it's not a finished product by my standards, and probably a few other folks' standards too.
I had to register my account too so i can express my opinions and my experience from Second Life and share them with you. I really think that Second Life is one of its kind as an very unique MMO based with many aspects and ways as you can imagine. If there is something you would like to find out or experience, i bet its already done in second life and can be founded.
About the engine and system. Yes, as you enter the game you will see that no matter how good you try to watch it it looks bad, characters are badly made and ugly, they walk stupid and it does look somewhat "old" game from the past. But that is just an first impression. Developers gives you a starting pack which is not much, the thruth is that there is really limitless options to customize your character for instance, and it differes greatly from any MMO you have seen so far. You can change your look and shape with about 50+ sliders, you can change totally your skin texture, customize your animations with an Animation override, how you walk, your gestures and all things like that.
Also, game runs badly and loads slow places you go, but you must bare in mind that its is a software size about 70mb (is that right, im bad with those anyway its very small) on your harddrive, your accesstool to single virtual enviroment which holds more than 35k+ member online globally any given time.
There is no actual game play, no roleplay and just malls... im really sorry but its very different experience what i have seen in my time in Second life. About one single year as a whole i made path with a swordfight which included both game play and roleplaying, and it took me very deep, must say that maybe more deep than any other MMO have ever taken. Combat system is called C:SI (combat samurai island) and its fighting system where you use katana-sword, which have 15 different attacks and block + 1 special hit and HUD which shows your health and stamina, your wins and losses. It sounds very simple but its far from it. Its a real time, there is no levels to grind, so therefore both, a starter and and veteran have exact same basics and the rest is just simple real life experience from those fights. there is 3 major swordmakers and all those katanas can be used CSI. One swords costs money, yes.. 800linden each which is about 3 USD but its not that much if you compare other MMO's and you really dont need anything else to fully experience with it.
In my time there in samurai island there were many different Clans to join, created and runned by a normal residents as me. Some of them provided roleplaying enviroment in many ways, with a japanese-ish, combat oriented philosophical backgrounds and routines.
Also building tool in Second life is amazing. I know how many people like playerhousing in MMO, at least i do. Well, if you have played games like SWG, which actually had very nice housing-thing ingame, it really blows mind in Second life. Where, in many of games you can maybe choose from 10+ different houses to build, you really have limitless options in second life as you can create from scratch everything in your house. Its an unique system, and there is no limit what you can build. Usually the only limit there is your own creativity, really.
And its not based only with sex and malls! Someone pointed nicely; its like internet, everything you can imagine you can find from there. And there is freedom to do anything you can imagine, so you know, people tend to imagine many kind of things! For me Second life have been virtual experiment to many kind of things.. I have been searching like, Spiritual path, seeking many different religious communities like, orthodox and christian churches, Gnostic sosities and eastern religions like buddhism and hinduism. Also i have been a part of one intresting ecumenical community which tried to form a discussion between different philosphies and religions. During same time i have relaxed around many cool bars and spots where people go and just hang around. There is many live concerts going on right now, im sure.. Its nice system where bands and DJ's can actually stream their live music from virtual stage to every people around and talk with them during the songs. Suzanne Vega have been live concert in SL and i hope its just a start.
Ok, i went too far, heh.. Anyway, its really ok that people dont like second life for me, everyone have their freedom to like it or not, heres just was something what i liked to point out. There can be many laggy and boring moments in second life, sometimes the freedom and overflow of content make you helpless to choose but its not bad "game" at all and really, there is no game like it, not even close. For the good and the bad.

Good post, i have to agree. I dont li ke second life very much, didnt like the graphics, the animations and the lack of support for new players. But what i saw is that the game is very flexible, i mean it accepts 3rd part scripts of all kinds and u can create and customize absolutely everything in the game. I found that amazing! Ppl selling things all the time can be annoying but the game is not all about that, u can have fun and roleplay with friends as well, i see a lot of potential.

-------------------->
Would you like some cheese with that whine?
Not usual to get that kind of an IM, no. But I've actually gotten that kind of IM in other games before too, so it isn't something limited to Second Life.
I, personally, wouldn't give you money in Second Life. Then again, I wouldn't give you money in any other game I've played over the years either.
Second Life can be a very entertaining experience, but it's not immediately obvious to most people, and I think it will really only appeal to a certain kind of gamer. Twitch gamers will not like it.
thats why i dont find it entertaining for myself....rest can enjoy it

Would you like some cheese with that whine?
Honestly. The only thing good I've found in second life is to make pretty 3d model character portraits.

Gotta look for the RP, my friend. Try:
Dark City
City of Angels
Toxian
Talos
And maaaany others.
Sphere objA = new Sphere();
Cube objB = new Cube();
Node nodeA = new Node();
objA.consistency(SQUISHY);
objB.consistency(RIGID);
objA.attach(objB);
objB.align(LEFT);
nodeA.attach(objA);

Well, hi there.
Thats it in a nutshell!
The "skills" arent just limited to creating content, either.
What about People Skills? Many clubs and other venues need someone with people skills for various jobs, and they pay for it too.
Second Life is good if you like cybersex, I have never seen so much porn in a game...
I had created a nice looking lady ingame, and after 2 minutes there were at least 4 people ganking me!!
this game just sucks.....
